OT: The Soccer Thread: July

So I’m a little late, but come celebrate the Fourth of July with that most American of sports, Soccer!

NB: Soccer is not actually the most American of sports.

Swansea gets a pass for me because those actually are the national colors of Wales.

The colors aren't the problem for me as much as the usage is. I can see a red, green and white kit not looking like a holiday theme, but that ain't it.

I found 35/1 by unibet. I would take those odds. I think their chances are better than just 3%.

It's a suckers bet, it sounds somewhat plausible, but the actual chance of Tottenham as constituted now winning is close to 0%. I suppose you have to weigh the possibility of them making a huge splurge on the transfer market, though.

Dreadful: Liverpool's 3rd Kit, Villa Away, Whatever that Black and Yellow Fulham thing is, United Home (are they lumberjacks now?), QPR Red, Swansea City Away

Excellent: Arsenal, Everton Away, Swansea City Home,

Dreadfully Dull: West Ham, Home and Away

This Onion article--about the NBA--comes pretty close to the concept.

I'm enjoying all the AVB-doin-stuff rumors and news.

-signs United youth team fullback Zeki Fryers for transfer fee that will be determined by independent tribunal for some reason
-makes opening offer to Internacional for Oscar
-accepting bids for Van Der Vaart
-apparently bidding on keepers

I like VDV, but it's not hard to imagine him being exactly the sort of player that won't work on a Villas-Boas squad. Especially since AVB is such a fitness freak and Van Der Vaart is a professional football player who can't play a complete game of professional football.

Fair point, but Villas-Boas used every sub in every game while at Chelsea. Having a player who can't go past the 60 or 70 minute mark isn't a concern for him.

I don't know if this kid is any good, but Ferguson is all pissy about it so it was worth every penny. It goes to a tribunal because Fryers is a Man U academy product. I don't think Man U thought that rule would be biting them in the ass like it has this summer.

Don't take my Van der Vaart from me. I haart Van der Vaart! I think he can play in an AVB system and with Niko and Pienaar leaving, it would be nice to have some quality depth on the team. I understand if he goes, though. Gotta let the manager shape the team the way he wants.

We just need to figure out how Bob Bradley forced Roma to sign his son. So, Michael Bradley is now the American player at the biggest club? I won't count Friedel since he's retired internationally. I suppose it's between Bradley and Howard depending on how you compare Roma to Everton.

I've been assuming that Dempsey would find his way onto a better roster - Liverpool were rumored at one point, but the talk has died down. Bradley's reign is not likely to last through the end of the offseason.

Depends on how you define biggest. Schalke's been as competitive as Roma has in recent years. And if you want to count Jermaine Jones.

I actually don't see Dempsey going anywhere. I see him, ironically, in the same situation that Donovan is in now. Too valuable to his current club to sell cheaply but not valuable enough to anyone else to pay dearly for. I think he'll stick at Fulham. The only out I'll give myself is Liverpool. Dempsey would be a better version of Sigurdsson for them, just not the young player they wanted and, of course, there's the American angle with LFC making a full frontal assault on capturing American hearts and minds with their tour and reality show. Dempsey would seem to slot in very well there as a player, too. Of course, for Dempsey, that wouldn't really grant his Champions League wish.

In other news...Diego Forlan is heading to Brazil, Luka Modric has agreed to personal terms with Real and a lot of heavy rumors that the Qataris are either investing or buying Spurs outright. I'm just going to put that in the back of my mind now until I have to worry about it.

Given that it is Scottish football the silliest possible thing will happen. Which is why I bet they will be relegated to the fourth tier, sending the SPL into hysterics. They will then be emergency readmitted into the SPL the week after. The Rangers will then refuse the readmission as it's paired with more than a slap on the wrist. In a compromise with the SPL they agree to play in the newly created SPL Division 1.5 the next season, the division consisting of St Mirren and Rangers playing 22 games against each other.

This season, no, although they did just peel off 9 points in a week so they're right back in it. But if history is any indication, European players have no idea what they're getting into with MLS. Even if they actually followed the league, they can't comprehend the week to week travel because they don't have anything like that.

How would Lampard fit into the Galaxy? They already have three DPs, so would MLS just ad hoc it and allow them four DPs? Or is the presumption that Keane would be off to a new team that he almost certainly has always rooted and dreamed playing for?
   139. Mattbert Posted: July 06, 2012 at 03:31 PM (#4174834)
Frank Lampard to the Galaxy? This rumor has some legs since he's vacation in LA with his agent.

It makes sense if you look at it a certain way. Lampard's won everything he can with Chelsea, and he might actually have a better chance of getting picked for England in 2014 if he's starring/playing regularly in MLS vs probably being a part-time player and/or looking well past his prime in the Premier League.

Or is the presumption that Keane would be off to a new team that he almost certainly has always rooted and dreamed playing for?

I think this is the more likely scenario compared to MLS giving LA special dispensation to carry a fourth designated player.

Unless, to the surprise of everyone, Donovan is about to be sold, Keane would be gone. He simply hasn't produced and doesn't move the needle enough to justify keeping him.

Yeah, I'm assuming Keane is going. It could be Donovan, but I'm guessing they'll move him up top instead.

I'm not sure how Beckham and Lampard would work together. I assume they'll need someone to do all the running for them, but maybe Lampard's content these days to be the holder.
   144. DA Baracus is gritty and hits with RISP Posted: July 06, 2012 at 04:52 PM (#4174892)
Beckham already has Juninho doing all the running for him. The pace in MLS isn't anything to get excited about, but a Beckham-Lampard partnership would probably get bullied around on the counter attack.

I don't believe that Lampard is coming to MLS anyways.

Biesla really does deserve his "Loco" nickname, the crazy bastard. Gets in a fight with a construction contractor (and looks to have beaten the #### out of him - the club had to ask (pay-off?) the contractor to not press charges) working on Athletic's training facilities because they missed all the deadlines (least surprising thing ever) and hands in his resignation after calling a press conference to talk about it (after the club covered it up), the board then meets and decides not to accept his resignation so he's staying.

Wenger can sound both admirable and egotistical at the same time.

Assuming he really said these things. It is The Sun, after all. I'm actually surprised how much crap Arsenal are getting in the wake of RVP's and Usmanov's dick moves.

More importantly, the Eredivisie's player of the year, Jan Vertonghen, is officially a Spur and Adebayor's permanent transfer from the Man City bargain bin is imminent. If Villas-Boas is half the manager he way hyped to be this time last year, the team is looking pretty strong. Vertonghen is a class left-footed CB to pair with the right footed Kaboul and both can play fullback if needed. So...woo hoo!

The general vibe from Chelsea last year from various player comments was great coach, awful man manager. He also completely melted down once under pressure, which I guess isn't *super* surprising considering it was probably the first time he had faced any adversity as a manager. Hopefully he's learnt a lot from the experience and does much better for Spurs.

Also general consensus Newcastle targets:-

* Douglas
* de Jong
* Debuchy

If they are good then they're British, if they are #### then they are Welsh or Scottish (Northern Ireland is generally always Northern Ireland).

I've listened to more than one sports news show on the radio where Andy Murray has been called British when winning and then reverted to being called Scottish after a loss /lol

Hmmm. Tottenham just hired Moutinho's Sporting youth team coach to be AVB's assistant. I get the feeling AVB really wants to bring Moutinho to London. The Andy Carroll to Milan rumors are my new favorite of the summer. Picturing the big donkey trying to play in Serie A always brightens my day! Fiorentina wants to buy Chamakh from Arsenal for some reason. Why Arsenal haven't just accepted whatever they're offering, I have no idea.

That seems a bit of a double-bankshot interpretation. Martins is another young (I assume), well-respected Portuguese coaching talent. Seems much more likely that AVB likes him, trusts him, and wants to work with him.

The hold-up with a Moutinho transfer - as best as I can tell from the rumors - seems more to be Porto's £20M+ asking price than Moutinho's willingness to move to England. I'm a little skeptical of guys whose stock rises with a big international performance. Everyone had a whole league season to watch him, and if he didn't impress as much then, that seems like better evidence of his quality. (Seems a bit like the overdrafting of college players who succeed in the NCAA tournament.)

I'm a little skeptical of guys whose stock rises with a big international performance.

Moutinho's been on the radar for a while now so I don't think the Euros has impacted his value much at all. I think the hold up on this transfer will be Porto as they'll want a lot of cash for him and they'll have no pressing need to sell if Chelsea give them what they want for Hulk. I'm pessimistic they'll get Moutinho even with the AVB factor because of the fee and that Moutinho's contract has more than one owner making a transfer even more complicated.
   169. Mattbert Posted: July 09, 2012 at 09:55 AM (#4176846)
Moutinho certainly did his value no harm at the Euros and may have bumped his price tag up a little bit, but it's not like he sucked beforehand and came out of nowhere this summer. He was excellent at Porto during their perfect season with Villas-Boas, and he was excellent again this season.

I don't think Martins was brought in specifically to woo Moutinho, though. I mean, he also worked with Ronaldo in the Sporting youth setup. That must mean Ronaldo will be the makeweight in the Modric transfer!
   170. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: July 09, 2012 at 10:09 AM (#4176858)
I didn't mean to imply Moutinho came out of nowhere, but I thought I'd read that Porto's asking price had doubled since the Euros. He's a good player, but there's a pretty big difference between £20M and £10M. I can't seem to find the source, so I could be crazy.

Wouldn't have him in the shirt, mate. Don't rate him a bit...

Supposedly Carvalho is the makeweight which doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The other piece of gossip this week is that Spurs have a bid in for Lloris and it's up to Lloris, at this point. I would not be unhappy with Lloris at WHL. Buffon and Casillas aren't going anywhere so Lloris is arguably the best keeper in the world Spurs could possibly get.

You're overrating Lloris quite a bit if you think Casillas and Buffon are the only better keepers in the world. Of course, none of the other better ones are going to Spurs either. (I'd at least put Neuer, Valdes, and Cech ahead of him, maybe others too.)

I don't think I am, but I've read other opinions of him closer to yours.

Yes, the rumors have Lloris commanding a fee that's well into the eight figures, and I'd see that as a pretty bad overpay. He's pretty good and has a lot of experience for a guy who's still young for a keeper, but there are better and cheaper options out there I feel.

The fee is bigger than I'd like to see, too, but if he's the keeper for the next 10 years we won't remember the fee so much anymore. The other option seems to be buying Butland from Birmingham, loaning him out, and sticking with either Friedel or Gomes for this season. Neither seem all that well equipped to play the system everyone is assuming AVB wants to implement, though. I'm not sure I'd like to see Gomes have to make quick decisions with the ball at his feet. I've seen other names, but nothing that feels like it has any weight to it. Patricio and Handanovich are two that have come up. Oddly, Krul and Vorm haven't come up at all lately.

I so wish Spurs had gotten Stekelenberg last summer. What a friggin' steal he was for Roma.

The guy I would go after is ter Stegen, but he'd be a tough get. Gladbach is in the CL, they've already sold Reus, and ter Stegen is a local boy.

I still think it's weird he went so cheaply. Villa and Spurs, at least, should have been all over him.

Why do they even have these Cups?

The French version of this is going to be at Red Bulls stadium for some reason. I can't imagine anyone is excited for it. How long before the Community Shield goes abroad, or is the mortgage on Wembley going to keep it local for a while longer?

The Chinese are paying 40 million € to host the Spanish Super Cup from next year.

Yeah, I should have just latched onto the obvious reason.

All this talk of the next Spurs keeper makes me feel even worse for Friedel, who now will not only certainly will miss out on CL games, but also had to cover a live event on TV where it was confirmed he'd never play in the CL. He deserved a better fate.

He still might be around. Like I said, there's a real chance Spurs will sign Butland and then loan him out so Friedel would be competing with Gomes for time. But yeah, there's no chance Friedel plays in the CL now. If Arsenal have really lost faith in Szczesny, Friedel would be a good signing for them to push him. I wouldn't begrudge him if he wanted to make that move in the slim chance Arsenal would come for him.

Friedel may not even be first choice for Villas-Boas. If he prioritizes distribution out of the back, who's the most comfortable with the ball at his feet? I feel like the answer might be Cudicini.

Just a quick off topic question for you Brits. Why are Scottish/Welsh/NI golfers designated as being Scottish or Welsh, etc. but Andy Murray is designated as GBR. Is the difference in the ways the sports are governed in the UK?

The way people do this is very confusing. On the ABC broadcast of the IndyCar race yesterday, driver nationalities were indicated by a little flag next to the driver's name. Dario Franchitti had a Scottish flag; Justin Wilson, Mike Conway, and James Jakes had English flags. When they put up the graphic showing the final results, Franchitti still had a Scottish flag, but the cross of St. George shown for the other drivers had been changed to a Union Jack.

For the last several years, there has been a meme in the UK that Murray is British when he wins and Scottish when he loses.

There was actually truth to that in the early English Tabloid coverage of his career, but everyone is too aware of it now to do it.

What the English establishment really wants is an English Wimbledon's Men Champion (a la Fred Perry), but in the complete absence of any potential winners has happily re-cast the goal as the "first British champion since".

BBC broadcasts of "The Open" and European Tour events will get this right, but nearly everyone else screws it up one way or the other.

What the English establishment really wants is an English, middle-class Wimbledon's Men Champion. They didn't like Fred Perry one bit while he was a player, which is why he emigrated to the US in his mid-20s.

My first, and still greatest, sports hero was Jim Clark, the race car driver who remains the only man to ever win the Formula One World Driver's Championship and the Indianapolis 500 in the same year. He was Scottish, I'm English. Yet it's never occurred to me that we're not of the same nationality. We're both British. Yes, I realise the distinction, but I get just as much pride over the success of a Scottish, Welsh, or Northern Irish athlete (or musician, or whatever) as I do from an English one. Do Americans really care if an American is from Texas, New York, or California in matters like this? (And yes, I understand that if someone is from your home town or other close geographical proximity, it does give an added boost. And yes, in international soccer, I do root for England first.)

How low they have sunk when they would embrace a middle-class champion. The ideal champion should of course have been at Eton and have at least two hyphens in his last name.

My impression from travelling in the UK is that the distinction is much more important to the Scottish and Welsh than to the English.

L'Equipe reporting that Lloris and Spurs are negotiating terms. This looks very likey to happen now. I think very highly of Lloris but my only concern is he's not a very big keeper and I worry he'll get bullied in England. Other than that, I think he's excellent. So much for not being able to sign players without Cl football or having the lovable Redknapp around. In fact, I'm still waitng for that mass exodus the tabloids were predicting...

If Texas and California had separate international football and baseball teams, their denizens may well care more about where sportsmen were from. And Shooty is right about who cares the most about this.

Jim Clark was awesome, btw. A tremendous and tragic loss.

Good news for Roman Pavulychenko...'Arry is on Russia's managerial shortlist*.

*Their shortlist is actually pretty ####### long and inlcudes Lippi, Guardiola, Benitez, Spalletti and some Russian guys whose names I won't attempt to spell.

Well, he is 6'2'' according to wikipedia. Not exactly like Fabien Barthez.

He's got a slight frame, though, and I'm skeptical that's he's really 6'2". Is he measured the same way they measure basketball players? He just looks smallish.
   197. Mattbert Posted: July 10, 2012 at 11:06 AM (#4178285)
Do you believe Thierry Henry is 6'2"? That's his listed height according to Wikipedia too. If do a GIS for him and Lloris there are plenty of photos of them standing for La Marseillaise together, and they look to be dead even in height.
   198. The Voice of America Posted: July 10, 2012 at 11:21 AM (#4178312)
Well, the Lyon official website also has him listed at 188 cm. Yes, he is lean but so is Iker. I'm sure he is really strong. In any case, Friedel usually stuck on the line so the team wouldn't miss anything in that regard.

Of course, they also reported Bradley to Roma and that's still not a done deal.
