These are the names you're going to hear re: Spurs

Guardiola: pipe dream, not going to happen
Van Gaal: possible
Moyes: very possible
Rafa Benitez: unlikely
Martinez: very very possible
Deschamps: possible
AVB: very possible

My guess is Roberto Martinez is the man in the theory you hire the opposite of the guy you just fired. Martinez is young, tactically astute and doesn't carry the strong smell of BS on him that Harry does. If he's as sharp as he seems, he could be Spurs manager for a decade which is what I think the club really longs for. Ramos was supposed to be that guy and that obviously flopped leading to Redknapp who was always supposed to be a short term fix. The only guys on my list I don't want are Rafa Benitez and AVB. I'm not sure what I have against Rafa, to be honest, just an irrational distrust of him. He seems like he always has an excuse, though, to be fair to him, he was spot on that Inter was a club in trouble when he took over there. I thought AVB seemed out of his depth at Chelsea and so he makes me nervous.

Yeah, I use that aggregator via the Tottenham site and my b-berg terminal which is actually the shiznitt for real-time sports news.

Some tweets already that Moyes is done and dusted. Not believing it yet--Spurs have been linked to Moyes for years now, it seems, so that seems like easy journalism.

Moyes seems to be the media and betting favorite. I think I would prefer Martinez as well, but it would be interesting to see what Moyes could do with more resources. It seems wrong to take him from Everton though.

I think it's hilarious Klinsmann keeps coming up as a possibility for Spurs. They may as well add Brian Clough to the list.

Spake some guy on the internet:
Harry Redknapp will reportedly be paid £3,000,000 in compensation by Tottenham, which after tax will equate to approximately £3,000,000.
People seem uninspired by Moyes. Is it just the style of football he prefers, or is there something else? My understanding with Moyes is that he's consistently gotten impressive results on a (relative) shoestring budget. I mean, it's possible that's just his particular skill set and moving up a step in budget won't bring out the best in him, but it sure seems like the sort of guy you'd want to give a shot.

This and he's not really a charmer in front of the camera so people think he's a bore. No reputable outlets are mentioning Moyes yet so I don't think it's anywhere near a done deal. I do think Spurs will move quickly, though. Unlike with player transfers, Levy seems to have replacements in place when he sacks a manager. This is going to be an interesting summer.

Another guy on the internet:
No contact for Moyes from spurs, but his dog has been seen in Switzerland opening a new bank account.

Scanning the Everton blogs, I'm kind of shocked to see how many Everton fans would be glad to be rid of him. Bizarre. They may be even more frozen in time than a certain segment of Liverpool support.

There is a not insignificant percentage of English supporters who share characteristics with those Japanese soldiers they were discovering in Borneo and the Philipines in the '70s.

It's more common in England than on the continent. I've never met a Stade de Reims, Greuther Fuerth or Pro Vercelli supporter who claims that the current manager is the only thing that is holding them back from a return to the heights.

Just caught up on today's games via DVR. Just want to note for posterity that I'm currently 6th place overall (BTF seems to be doing well in over Twatball standings - not sure what that says about us all...), since I can only go down from here, I want to enjoy my Twattish peak...

An as an Everton supporter re: Moyes, you definitely see mixed reactions, most fans seem to appreciate what he's done with the limited budgets finishing as high as they do most years, but you still have plenty who see 10 years and no trophies, as well as this year's three losses to Liverpool, including the loss in the FA Cup semi-finals as a form of ultimate failure, even though Everton finished ahead of Liverpool in the standings this year. It will be interesting to see what happens.

As someone who roots for Everton, I guess I'm hoping that the increase in the TV money will help drag them out of trouble with the banks, and they can at least keep their top players, and maybe even stregthen the depth of their squad for the upcoming season.

I like Everton and think Moyes has done a terrific job with them. I'd be sad to see him go, but Tottenham would be a good club for him. I don't suppose he'd try to get Landon there next winter....

Boateng has been pretty awesome, though I'm disappointed he'll have to miss the next game.

I was wondering the same thing. I wouldn't be surprised, though I don't know where they'd play him. I guess he's probably better than Lennon, right?

I'll catch up later, but everyone seems to agree Ronaldo had a shocker. He just doesn't have the platform to flourish with his national team, it seems (just like that other star in La Liga).

Ronaldo doesn't get the opportunities for Portugal that he gets for Real, but today he has nobody to blame but himself. He was in on the keeper twice and screwed up both efforts.

What I've found consistently hysterical is TE, Jr. calling Redknapp "Sir Harry Redknapp," because he erroneously thinks all managers are called "Sir" from hearing it said so often with SAF... So, for that reason alone I will miss Sir Harry.
   1125. Juan V Posted: June 14, 2012 at 03:54 AM (#4156414)
Watching the replay, Ronaldo's marksmanship rates about an 80-85% in a 0 to Torres scale.

I've been thinking about Spain... maybe Llorente should start, or at least be an early sub if things don't go as well. Sure, it is playing a bit into Ireland's strengths, but a false nine would be pretty much redundant, and a big guy up front would give them alternatives, perhaps as a pivot for Iniesta and/or Silva to make forward runs and make mid-range shots.

'Arry's friends at the Mail are hammering Spurs. Evidently, Luka is so sad about the sacking he wants to leave. In fact, all the best Spurs players will want to leave now. Boo hoo. I'm guessing all the tabloids will have their knives out for Spurs and Levy for a while. This is the kind of stuff I will not miss about Harry.

At least Portugal won, though I have to say, Ronaldo showed no joy at all when his teammates scored. He does not seem like much of a team player. He even made a crack about Messi losing at the Copa America afterward. Great player, remains a giant douche.

Very much looking forward to watching Modric and Pirlo pull the strings today. Hopefully DiNatale gets the start for Italy.

Tough call, but I have to go with DeJong and Van Bommel. I mean, their only purpose in life is to accumulate cards, and they couldn't even catch Schweinsteiger late.
1132. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 14, 2012 at 10:37 AM (#4156568)
Ronaldo had some positives to his game - good movement which created those chances before he bungled them, and some nice passes, and so on. Van Bommel was completely worthless, and De Jong not much better.

On the Guardian pod this morning, they were talking up the conspiracy theory that Germany and Denmark could collude to both get through. I'm not buying it, but am I missing something? It is true that if the Dutch win, while Germany and Denmark draw, the Germans and Danes go through. However, if Portugal earns a draw, and Germany and Denmark draw, Portugal goes through because of their win over Denmark. The Danes would have to be pretty crazy to play for a draw when a Portuguese equalizer would send them home. Germany can play for a draw, since they've got the six points, but I think Denmark have to go for the win. And Germany could get knocked out if they lose, so they'll have to attack a little.

I could see it coming into play in the 80th minute or later, if Denmark and Germany are tied and the Dutch have a two goal lead or something, but I don't see how the conspiracy works before then.

Yeah, something like Intrade for transfer rumours would be so cool.

You could lay Klinsmann on Betfair. It's a very thin market though, huge spread at 14.5-19. Moyes is the favorite of course at 4.1-4.4. But the market wouldn't bear any kind of serious bet, a traditional bookie is probably a better choice.

With ADN's injuries and age, a 20-30 min substitute role seems pretty reasonable. Plus, who doesn't want to see more Balotelli? He entertains in so many ways.

Who had a worse day: Ronaldo or the Dutch midfielders charged with tracking Schweinsteiger?

ZM's analysis posits that the Dutch got punked by Low's tactics on that score. Cox suggests that the Netherlands assumed that one of the Khedira-Schweinsteiger pivot would always be sitting back to provide cover for the back four and mark Sneijder. For the goals, both German midfielders came forward at the same time. With De Jong having been dragged wide by Ozil that left van Bommel with two runners to deal with, and Schweinsteiger was free in space to pick out Gomez. Simples.

That would be quite a shocker. Klinsmann's barely sunk his teeth into his USA project, and he seems to rather enjoy the California lifestyle. I can't see why he'd be interested in the Spurs job at this particular time.

By the way, how fantastic is it that amongst Croatia's team--ten of whom have surnames ending in -a or -c--you've got...Gordon Schildenfeld? It sounds like a side plot from a bad 1980s comedy where a chap from accounts receivable has stumbled into the dressing room and somehow been given a shirt in a zany case of mistaken identity.
   1156. Textbook Editor Posted: June 14, 2012 at 01:26 PM (#4156847)
An Italy win gives them 4 points. Croatia would have 3, Spain 1, Ireland 0 (going into the Spain v Ireland match).

The best hope for Ireland is for Italy to have the bare minimum in points going into the game on Monday. Ideally, this match ends in a draw, which would leave it as:

Croatia 4
Italy 2
Spain 1
Ireland 0

A draw against Spain then leaves it as:

Croatia 4
Italy 2
Spain 2
Ireland 1

If Croatia can beat/draw Spain, while Ireland beats Italy, Ireland would go through over Spain... and yes, we can all prepare for end times.

[/grasping at straws]

   1161. Textbook Editor Posted: June 14, 2012 at 01:47 PM (#4156862)
Just for giggles:

A WIN against Spain and a draw in Italy v. Croatia leaves it as:

Croatia 4
Ireland 3
Italy 2
Spain 1

...and then a win over Italy or a draw with Italy + a Spain draw against Croatia sees Ireland through. (Not sure what a draw + Spain win would result in, as it would then come down to GD and be dependent upon scores in the next 2 games.)
   1162. Textbook Editor Posted: June 14, 2012 at 01:58 PM (#4156874)

Me neither. I think Martinez would be a sexier choice than Moyes, but the latter would also be interesting from the much-discussed "he could do so much more with a decent transfer kitty" angle. Airport twitter photo silliness aside, though, Villas-Boas is actually not that much of a reach as a candidate, is he?

There's a third party in this transaction, which tends to complicate things...

Would AVB be a good fit at Spurs?

I think Tottenham's squad would be a much better fit for his approach to the game than the Chelsea squad he inherited. How much of Tottenham's squad would be left for him to inherit is another kettle of fish, though.

I honestly don't know which is why I'd steer clear of him. That spell at Chelsea made his seem callow though I don't doubt his intelligence. I worry that he can't sell the egomaniacs in your average EPL locker room he knows what he's doing, is all.

I wonder if Roberto Martinez ever gets tired of Dave Whelan speaking for him? That is an odd relationship. I get the feeling Whelan thinks Martinez likes him a lot more than Martinez may actually like him, in a very Junior High kind of way. I should probably grow up at some point.

Would Harry Redknapp have said the same about winning the league in two years if he had kept the job? Don't think so...

He likes him enough to not go with Villa, that's something.

His refrain was always Spurs were 2 or 3 class players away, which is probably true, but he was basically asking for a 75 million quid or so outlay which wasn't realistic. He was born to manage a Sugar Daddy club, really. The irony is that, when injuries forced his hand, he found he had great players already available--Bale and Sandro, namely.

But Villa is that kid in 8th grade who hasn't realized he needs deodorant yet.

Wow, Torres

That's how bad Ireland is...even Torres scores on them.

Given has not had a good tourney. Maybe Villa should re-sign Guzan, ASAP.

Torres?!

Pique with a little bit of dribbling and a shot from within the Irish box. Lolz.

Anyone else watching the game on ESPN3 just get switched to the Spanish language feed for a minute or so?

Did anyone else's WatchESPN feed switch to Spanish briefly? I'm tempted to switch to it permanently. I definitely didn't miss Ian Darke.

Ward's defending on Torres for that goal was woeful. Made him look like Messi, which is hard to do.

Ah well; I have a good cider at the ready at the final whistle. Onward to 2014!

Ireland still just a sucker punch away.
   1191. Mattbert Posted: June 14, 2012 at 03:38 PM (#4156982)
Spain are often dominant, but they rarely give anyone a real hiding in terms of goal difference in competitive games. Occasionally they'll beat the snot out of a minnow in qualifying, but that's about it. In friendlies, it seems like they're as likely to be on the wrong end of a drubbing as the right end.

Considering the gulf in class between the two sides, this game should really be a one-way cricket score. But if they grab another goal early in the second half, just watch Spain relax and knock it around for 30-40 minutes.
1192. President of the David Eckstein Fan Club Posted: June 14, 2012 at 03:50 PM (#4156994)
2-0, deservedly so. Spain are so dominant right now

That's harsh. Torres often looks fantastic... right up until the finish.
