OT: The Soccer Thread: June

Euro 2012 Kicks Off!

Notable Early Round Matches:

Basically anything in Group B, which features teams currently ranked second, fourth, fifth and tenth in the FIFA rankings. That’s insane. Matchdays are June 9 (Saturday), 13 (Wednesday) and 17 (Sunday—Father’s Day). Don’t miss ‘em.

Brilliant finish.

That was a 'triffic goal by Welbeck.

It's better to go out with a bang than a whimper. And that was a nifty goal.

That looked like a game between West Brom and Stoke, but it was fun.

Watching the replays. When did UEFA decide to host games in Atlantis?
   1307. Swedish Chef Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:13 AM (#4158462)
It's the morning after, hangovers abound in Sweden, so it's just like any other Saturday. The stupidly nationalistic Swedish press have temporarily stopped laughing at the English press for being stupidly nationalistic. Thanks to the second half there won't be much of a hounding for this team to endure, even if just about everybody seems to be longing for the good old days of safety first (which were of course groaned about at the time). But then it might not be a question of tactics, the defensive players they have now aren't close to the class of previous teams, and it doesn't get better with Mellberg's international retirement.

The big question is of course how long they will have Zlatan, the WC campaign or through the next Euro campaign? Or will he hang them up right now? He could always unretire if they qualify.

Judging by what little talent is coming up, this team will get worse before it gets better (if it ever does). The single obvious addition to look forward to is John Guidetti.

By the way, BBTF has been incredibly slow for me lately, but it became fast and snappy once I disabled Javascript (that breaks a lot of the web, but it's possible to do by site in Opera...).

I really like the dark blue England kits.

As long as you have Zlatan, the future isn't nearly as bleak as Ireland's future.
   1312. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 16, 2012 at 11:44 AM (#4158558)
And while both countries have been knocked out of the Euros, only Sweden had the foresight to avoid joining the Euro.

#1312, true, true...
   1314. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: June 16, 2012 at 12:12 PM (#4158571)
I think the EC may wish Ireland had that foresight about now...

I can't decide if I want to watch the games today at a pub or in the comfort of home. It seems like the 4 countries involved today will create the least atmosphere of any of the groups in my neighborhood. I guess I could take the train to Astoria (Greek and Czech), Greenpoint (Polish) or Brighton Beach (Russian). Astoria might be the most fun, I guess.

No Tottenham manager news. Joe Jordan, Kevin Bond and Clive Allen given the sack but Tim Sherwood is being kept on board. The club really likes Tim Sherwood. There's a crazy rumor that Comolli is coming back in some capacity. I love the silly season!
   1315. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 16, 2012 at 12:33 PM (#4158585)
Isn't Astoria going to be mostly Greek? I'd definitely go Polish and Greenpoint, barring transport issues. You're far more likely to be able to celebrate with the crowd, which is half the point of a field trip like that.

Yeah I've got this problem too. I'll be cheering for Poland and I don't want to be a basketcase at a bar so my house might be best. Maybe I'll flip a coin.

Apparently Poland is basically going with the same lineup, which means three defensive midfielders (Dudka, Polanski, Murawski). I'd replace Murawski with Adrian Mierzejewski; he's more of an attacker and looked decent in his limited time against Russia. Smuda does not like to attack.

Damien Perquis might be out for Poland (I hope not!) and it looks like Rosicky is out for the Czechs.
   1317. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: June 16, 2012 at 12:42 PM (#4158587)
Isn't Astoria going to be mostly Greek?

There are Czech bars/restaurants, too. I'm more familiar with Greenpoint so that seems a better bet. Now I just have to decide if I want to head over and if I convince the gf to go, too, as we're supposed to be doing stuff together today.

and it looks like Rosicky is out for the Czechs.

That's a big loss for the Czechs. He's looked very good.

I watched some of the World Cup (including the US win over Algeria!) in a Czech beer garden in Astoria. It was fantastic. Most enjoyable place to watch soccer I found in NYC while I was there.

I've been there but I couldn't remember if they had tv's. I blame the beer...It's a brilliant day today so I imagine it will be packed.
   1320. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 16, 2012 at 01:18 PM (#4158605)
Oh, right, the beer gardens. I've been twice, and I found them a bit insufferably bro-y and not terribly Czech (other than the beer). Maybe I went to the wrong ones.

The one I went to definitely did not have a bro vibe (which is about the single worst feature of a bar, in my opinion). It was a huge outdoor space, with big screen TVs set up all around, and a pretty wide-ranging crowd. Lots of families, lots of old Czech guys, a fair amount of hipsters trying to maintain their attitude of studied cool while also cheering for the soccer. Fun times.
   1322. Darkness and the howling fantods Posted: June 16, 2012 at 02:52 PM (#4158643)
Cech was going the wrong way there. Lucky it was wide.
   1323. Spivey Posted: June 16, 2012 at 02:59 PM (#4158646)
Poland's had some really good chances already, like 3 or 4, and it's only 13 minutes in.
   1324. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:00 PM (#4158647)
Bright start for Poland, but they're going to kick themselves if they don't finish one here.
   1325. Baldrick Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:01 PM (#4158648)
Poland is just tearing the Czechs apart. Slightly better finishing and they could have three or four goals already.
   1326. Baldrick Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:02 PM (#4158651)
I've only got Russia-Greece on my laptop, but it looks like Russia is (unsurprisingly) dominating.
   1327. Baldrick Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:07 PM (#4158653)
How has Poland not scored?!?!?!
   1328. Spivey Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:08 PM (#4158654)
The Czechs are playing like clowns right now... you can't just try to play for a draw here, they're going to lose.
   1329. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:12 PM (#4158656)
Was that thunder I heard? The Czechs ought to be hoping for a lightning induced game stoppage ...
   1330. Baldrick Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:14 PM (#4158658)
If they have to suspend the Poland-Czech game, do they also suspend the other game to keep the simultaneity? That would be weird.

As somebody who is quite familiar with Poland's offensive players, let me just say: This is hardly surprising.
   1333. AuntBea Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:26 PM (#4158663)
Is it Derek Rae who keeps saying that the Czech Republic is almost certainly through with a tie? That seems wrong. If Greece beats Russia (by 5 goals or fewer), and Czec/Poland ends in a tie, the Czech Republic is out. According to UEFA.

8.07 If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the
following criteria are applied, in the order given; to determine the rankings:
a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;
b) superior goal difference in the matches among the teams in question (if more
than two teams finish equal on points);
c) higher number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if
more than two teams finish equal on points);
d) superior goal difference in all the group matches;
e) higher number of goals scored in all the group matches;
f) position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system (see Annex I,
paragraph 1.2.2);
g) fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);
h) drawing of lots.

   1334. FancyPantsHandle glistening with foreign substance Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:31 PM (#4158664)
f) position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system (see Annex I,
paragraph 1.2.2);

Not that it matters since it never comes into play, but I always feel like it should be reverse order. If you were the better team, and didn't beat the lesser team outright, you don't deserve to go through...
   1335. AuntBea Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:31 PM (#4158665)
Now, ready for some real ambiguity? If Greece wins by 5 goals or fewer, and Czech/Poland tie, both Greece and Russia have a legitimate claim that they have each won the group. That is because rule 8.07 does not contain the all important phrase contained in the UEFA qualifying rules:
As in Euro 2008 qualifying: If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings.[7]

higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question;
higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;
if, after applying criteria 1) to 4) to several teams, two or more teams still have an equal ranking, the criteria 1) to 4) will be reapplied to determine the ranking of these teams. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 6) to 10) apply;
superior goal difference in all group matches;
higher number of goals scored in all group matches;
higher number of goals scored away from home in all group matches;
fair play ranking in all group matches;
drawing of lots.

   1339. Baldrick Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:36 PM (#4158671)
So if it finished as it is right now, it's Russia and Greece that would go through?
   1340. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:36 PM (#4158670)
Feel free to start kicking yourselves, Poland ...
   1341. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:37 PM (#4158672)
Zhirkov puts on some fantastic clownshoes and turns a throw-in into a breakaway.
   1342. AuntBea Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:43 PM (#4158678)
"Russia will be through with a draw, and could even afford a defeat by fewer than six goals if the other game finishes level." So yes, right now, Russia and Greece. But who wins the group? That depends on how you interpret the rules. Call the lawyers!
   1343. AuntBea Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:49 PM (#4158686)
So, what if Germany defeats Denmark 2-1, and Netherlands beat Portugal 1-0? Then, in the "mini group" of Denmark, Portugal, Netherlands, all 3 will be level on points (step (a)) and goal differential (step (b)), but Netherlands will only have 1 goal scored (step (c)), so they are out. Now here is the trick. Do you then go back to step (a) and have Portugal go through via head to head against Denmark, or do you continue on to step (d) and have Denmark advance on superior goals scored in the group (via step (e))? I have no idea, and I'm not sure UEFA does either.

Edited for correct scenario

   1344. Swedish Chef Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:53 PM (#4158693)
I don't see the ambiguity, the tiebreakers are applied in the order given. Because the three teams are equal under criteria a, criteria b and on is used to separate them.
   1345. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:55 PM (#4158695)
AB - the same problem obtains if Denmark loses 2-0 (or worse) to Germany and the Dutch beat Portugal 1-0.
   1346. Swedish Chef Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:59 PM (#4158699)
Also note that in the qualifiers rule, they go through four tiebreakers before they start again.
   1347. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:01 PM (#4158700)
I don't see the ambiguity, the tiebreakers are applied in the order given. Because the three teams are equal under criteria a, criteria b and on is used to separate them.
The problem is what to do if three teams (X, Y, and Z) are tied on criteria A, but two of them (X and Y) are tied on criteria B while the third (Z) is behind. Do you

(1) eliminate Team Z and compare Teams X and Y based on criteria A?
(2) eliminate Team Z and compare Teams X and Y based on criteria C?
(3) compare teams X, Y, and Z based on criteria C?
   1348. AuntBea Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:02 PM (#4158701)
Oh right sorry. Greece would have to win 2-0. Then goal difference would be +1 for both Greece and Russia. The do you go on to step (c) or go back to step (a)? Maybe not totally ambiguous. But at least the Denmark/Portugal/Netherlands one would be.
   1349. Swedish Chef Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:02 PM (#4158703)
Yes, and the rule is unambigious, you don't start again.

   1355. President of the David Eckstein Fan Club Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:11 PM (#4158712)
Err sorry. That should have been a penalty on the Russian defender (one for Greece to take)
   1356. AuntBea Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:12 PM (#4158713)
Yes, and the rule is unambigious, you don't start again.

So you say, but does the rule really say you can continue to step (d) with only two teams after having one eliminated at step (c)? Read most plainly, the rule does not allow you to eliminate only one team at any step and then continue on with the remaining teams. The third (eliminated) team would have a legitimate complaint that the tie among all three teams was not actually broken, so they should be included in the next step whatever that is. Of course this seems wrong, but so does continuing on with just two teams.
   1357. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:12 PM (#4158714)
Ok, I think the UEFA does have it settled. From AB's link, the rule:
Paragraph 08.07 of the UEFA European Football Championship 2010-12 regulations now reads as follows, with a new clause d) shown in bold.

"If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

a) Higher number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;

b) Superior goal difference resulting from the matches played between the teams in question;

c) Higher number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question;

d) If, after having applied criteria a) to c), two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to c) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine the final rankings of the two teams. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria e) to i) apply in the order given;

e) superior goal difference in all group matches;

f) higher number of goals scored in all group matches;

**g) position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system (see annex I, paragraph 1.2.2);

h) fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);

i) drawing of lots"
I think that's unambiguous, as the Chef says.
   1358. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:12 PM (#4158715)
Err sorry. That should have been a penalty on the Russian defender (one for Greece to take)

Huge decision both ways. If he gives a penalty, I think he also has to give Ignashevich a red card for stopping a clear scoring chance. As is he gave Karagounis a yellow card for protest, which will keep him out of the next match if there is one.
   1359. Baldrick Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:13 PM (#4158716)
So Russia right now is winning the group. But if the Czechs score one goal, Russia wouldn't advance at all. Weird.

This tiebreaker system is silly. I strongly prefer simple goal difference over the whole group as the first tiebreaker. When you're trying to pick among three teams, you have to toss out HALF of the games in the group.
   1360. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:14 PM (#4158717)
Russia now definitely need a goal.
   1361. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:15 PM (#4158719)
Yeah, Poland can *keep* kicking themselves now ...
   1362. Graham Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:15 PM (#4158720)

   1363. Tike Redman's Shattered Dreams (shayborg) Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:16 PM (#4158721)

   1364. AuntBea Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:16 PM (#4158722)
That rule was added March 20 this year! I am 3 months behind. People have been complaining about this ambiguity for 6 years now, so I just assumed UEFA had their blindfold on still. Glad to see they have come to their senses.
   1365. Swedish Chef Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:17 PM (#4158723)

   1368. Swedish Chef Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:24 PM (#4158729)
If this stands, it will definitely go down as the biggest heartbreak in the tournament. Russia went on a date planning to propose but ended up getting dumped instead.

Katsouranis went off on a stretcher. Got off the stretcher the second it crossed the touchline and was ready to come back on.

That #### should be a straight red. If you need the stretcher, you're not allowed back in the game for a minimum of five minutes.

   1380. Baldrick Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:37 PM (#4158747)
Russia are just useless. WTF happened to them?
   1381. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:37 PM (#4158748)
The funny thing is that great, last-second chance for the Poles would have done nothing for Poland, but would have put the Russians through.
   1382. Baldrick Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:38 PM (#4158750)
F-ing Greece.

Right now I'm recalling Mattbert from when we were making pre-tournament predictions. I believe he said "You guys are crazy. Russia aren't that good."
   1384. Mattbert Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:38 PM (#4158752)
I can't believe I'm rooting for Russia. I hate this group.

It's a shame they couldn't all lose.
   1385. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:39 PM (#4158753)
I'd much rather have Poland than Greece, but on the other hand, Russia can always eat a big bag of dicks, so there's that to say about the final results ...
   1386. Flynn Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:40 PM (#4158754)
This sets up a Germany-Greece quarter, and maybe the most delightful moment of schadenfreude in football history.

Right now I'm recalling Mattbert from when we were making pre-tournament predictions. I believe he said "You guys are crazy. Russia aren't that good."

I also said they'd qualify comfortably for the knockout stage.
   1388. Baldrick Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:40 PM (#4158756)
I agree they're not that good but Greece is just miserable. At least they'll get dumped out by the Germans in the quarterfinals.

Ugh.

Tomorrow should be a lot of fun.

The Germans are going to get Greece in the QFs. ######## typical.
   1391. Textbook Editor Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:42 PM (#4158759)
See, Greece has done exactly what Ireland had hoped to do--finish on 4 points and hope results went your way.
   1392. President of the David Eckstein Fan Club Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:43 PM (#4158761)
Russia just weren't good enough, shades of the Dutch against Denmark really with all their possession but unable to put enough shots on target. Dzagoev had his header but the Greeks had the penalty shout and hit the bar while spending long periods of time without even trying to do much going forward.

After their first match I thought the Russians might make some noise again in the tournament, really disappointing result.
   1393. Mattbert Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:44 PM (#4158762)
Ireland should have hoped to draw a group with three other mediocre teams instead of three good ones, too.

That was in response to predictions they would make it to the semi-finals.
   1395. Baldrick Posted: June 16, 2012 at 04:47 PM (#4158766)
Group A: good riddance to you. I hope both of your teams get shellacked in the quarterfinals.

Well, yeah. I was right about that part!

That Czech clearance was crazy. Is it weird that there is a headline on ESPN that says "Spurs' Parker hurts eye in nightclub incident" and I thought what is Scott Parker doing in a nightclub?
   1398. Swedish Chef Posted: June 16, 2012 at 05:00 PM (#4158778)
There's a wholly unsourced claim in Gazzetta dello Sport that AVB has signed with Tottenham.
   1399. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 16, 2012 at 05:03 PM (#4158779)
What do you mean "unsourced"? I quote:
One Twitter user Agent_ITK who has a decent record in ‘inside info’ is claiming that AVB has been offered a two-year deal with the option for a further two years but insists that nothing has been signed yet. He went on to claim that if the deal is signed he will be unveiled on Monday or Tuesday. Roberto Martinez apparently refused to speak to Tottenham.

Ha! I had the exact same reaction.
