Now don't you all feel guilty for picking van Bommel for your tw@t team? Huh? Huh?
International soccer governance continues to amaze me with both its corruption and stupidity. Platini really is practicing for when he heads up FIFA.
I like players who are kind-hearted off the field and ######## on it.
On the contrary, every time he walks off the field to protest racism, UEFA's rules will award my team 8 points.
Ha!
He's another big, strong kid in the Steven Caulker mold, but I think supposedly a bit more cultured than Caulker was at that age.
On this...watching recordings after work worked pretty well for me during the season...soccer's made big strides in the US but it's still pretty easy to avoid scores without having to avoid all tv and internet. But with ESPN doing the Euros, this could be tough. Somehow I managed this during the last World Cup, but I don't remember how.
I will admit transfer rumors and ITK gossip has become a real guilty pleasure of mine. Thanks to the internet news aggregators and my Bloomberg terminal I can see the evolution of a story in practically real time and you get a feel for when club A is tapping up a player on Team B through their "friends" in the media and such. Modric to Man U for 22 million as a done deal is hilarious, for instance. Red Nose must be getting frustrated with Daniel Levy already. The Daily Mail has Spurs swooping in for Clarence Seedorf, too, which is a nice chuckle. The only rumor I sort of hope might have some basis in reality is Hugo Lloris to Spurs. I think he'd be arguably the best keeper in the PL from day one which is why I doubt he'd go to Spurs. These rumors are fun time wasters, though.
It doesn't beat sleeping. Damn you time zones!!!
Are you in Japan?
A host nation and two teams full of white guys to avoid racist chants is a pretty good way to kick things off.
What's Polish for "We'll show you some Austerity!"
Looks like Bocanegra will shift over.
Nop. Aussieland.
Crikey. Pour yourself a few schooners and stay up late. Greek soccer is worth suffering for!
Meh, I'm not going to take the time to learn the 1000 words Aussies have for a glass of beer.
edit: Speaking of Oz, they drew today with Oman in WC Qualifying.
I'm going with Holland to win it and Russia to be a surprise semi-finalist. I want to go with England as my surprise semi-finalist but if they really start Downing and Carroll I just can't pick them. Can not do it. Bearing that in mind, I predict Downing will have a fantastic tournament as yet another in a ceaseless barrage of reminders that I don't know what I'm talking about. Also, Huntelaar for the golden boot.
I actually miss terribly the 285ml beer. It's the perfect amount for a serving, or get two at a time if you want to drop the shithammer.
Edit: I can see why they are increasing the participation to 24 teams next time. There really are no true minnows in the tournament, other than the horse[manure] of having both host teams as automatic qualifiers. Especially when there are only 16 slots, Ukraine and Poland should have had to play each other for the auto, and then the loser could enter regular qualifying.
I'll take that if it means Ireland sneaking through.
I think England will make it out of their group comfortably and could even nick top spot if France disappoints against Sweden/Ukraine (I don't think they will). Regardless, though, England will almost certainly play one of Spain, Italy, or Croatia in the quarters. Never say never, but I would not expect them to have much of a chance against Spain and they'd be at best 50/50 shots to beat Italy and Croatia.

Smuda does a lot of stupid stuff but I generally like the starting 11 for today.
A: Poland, Czech Republic
B: Netherlands, Germany
C: Spain, Italy
D: France, Ukraine
Germany over Poland (just like always.)

France win it over Germany.
If they were good, they wouldn't be a surprise semi-finalist!
EDIT: #### Greece for not making the substitution and ruining my post.
I am cheering for Poland... but that was harsh.
Also, Sokratis should really use his glorious last name on his shirt.
The second card was wronger. The Polish player was going to the ground because he slipped, not because he was fouled.
But he didn't do anything, how much more careful can he be?
I agree. I also predicted they will come out of Group A, after all. However, the folks who have Russia making the semis (or more!) think they'll turn over Germany, l'Oranje, or even Portugal. At a minimum! I think that's a bridge too far for a fairly pedestrian side like the Rooskies.
I'm sorry, you must be lost, the Rugby World Cup is that way.
There was nothing even remotely rugby-ish about the play. At worst there was slight contact that might warrant a foul being called, but in reality the player was already slipping and falling.
He didn't do anything stupid other than to assume the ref was capable of making an intelligent decision there.
Horrible ####### defending.
He pushed him down, classic thing to prevent the other player from regaining his balance. If he wouldn't have been able to regain it anyway, well that only makes it stupider, not less illegal.
Poland looks clueless when they play possession soccer. So much better on the counter.
I'm rooting against Greece, but that's just ridiculously harsh.
Well, he is a garbage player, so...
edit: Why oh why didn't I take the Arsenal keeper? I don't deserve the twatball trophy.
(To be clear, I mean the penalty itself was awful, the decision to award it and the red card were clearly correct.)
