OT: The Soccer Thread: June

Euro 2012 Kicks Off!

Notable Early Round Matches:

Basically anything in Group B, which features teams currently ranked second, fourth, fifth and tenth in the FIFA rankings. That’s insane. Matchdays are June 9 (Saturday), 13 (Wednesday) and 17 (Sunday—Father’s Day). Don’t miss ‘em.

Steve Clarke will be manager at West Brom. I do not have an opinion about this.
   202. Mattbert Posted: June 07, 2012 at 03:05 PM (#4150999)
I do. It's nice to see Clarke get a gig in the boss's chair, although the account of his hiring I read this morning seemed to be at pains to emphasize he is the new "head coach" rather than "manager", so take that as you will. Anyway, he's been given a lot of credit for the fine defensive records of Chelsea and Liverpool during his time at those clubs. West Ham and Newcastle were less impressive, but Zola always said he could not have been as successful at West Ham as he was at first without Clarke's considerable assistance.

BTF league is here.
This is good. I'm in. My tactical plan is to have the back ten leave Balotelli so isolated that out of frustration he'll do to the opposing team / ref / fans / himself what he did to that poor bib.

Andersen

Papastathopoulos
Pepe
Terry
Khacheridi
Dunne

Alonso
de Jong
Meireles
De Rossi

Balotelli

I don't know what's worse, the racists or UEFA, who is clearly enabling it by pretending it didn't happen.
   206. ursus arctos Posted: June 07, 2012 at 06:47 PM (#4151171)
Was just going to post that. I find the UEFA response particularly despicable.
   207. DA Baracus Posted: June 07, 2012 at 07:00 PM (#4151178)
And UEFA is consistent in their asshattery. Platini isn't going to be winning the Nobel Peace Prize for saying that players who walk off will be carded. I'm glad van Bommel called them out on it and I hope it continues from other white players. The Polish dog and pony show described in the article is laughable.

Now don't you all feel guilty for picking van Bommel for your tw@t team? Huh? Huh?

International soccer governance continues to amaze me with both its corruption and stupidity. Platini really is practicing for when he heads up FIFA.

Anyone know anything about Jamaal Lascelles from Forest? Supposedly Spurs are signing him.

On the contrary, every time he walks off the field to protest racism, UEFA's rules will award my team 8 points.

He's another big, strong kid in the Steven Caulker mold, but I think supposedly a bit more cultured than Caulker was at that age.

Thank's for reposting the BTF league post. Most fun I've had picking a fantasy team in a while. They should let us have a bench too, I had more players I wanted to select than I could fit in my starting eleven...

Is there any BTF league set up for predictions?
   216. puck Posted: June 07, 2012 at 10:55 PM (#4151367)
Thanks for the heads up on the scores. I am officially jealous of those of you able to watch in real time.

On this...watching recordings after work worked pretty well for me during the season...soccer's made big strides in the US but it's still pretty easy to avoid scores without having to avoid all tv and internet. But with ESPN doing the Euros, this could be tough. Somehow I managed this during the last World Cup, but I don't remember how.
   217. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 08, 2012 at 08:26 AM (#4151457)
Poland and Greece is not the sexiest start to this tournament but it will beat working, I guess.

I will admit transfer rumors and ITK gossip has become a real guilty pleasure of mine. Thanks to the internet news aggregators and my Bloomberg terminal I can see the evolution of a story in practically real time and you get a feel for when club A is tapping up a player on Team B through their "friends" in the media and such. Modric to Man U for 22 million as a done deal is hilarious, for instance. Red Nose must be getting frustrated with Daniel Levy already. The Daily Mail has Spurs swooping in for Clarence Seedorf, too, which is a nice chuckle. The only rumor I sort of hope might have some basis in reality is Hugo Lloris to Spurs. I think he'd be arguably the best keeper in the PL from day one which is why I doubt he'd go to Spurs. These rumors are fun time wasters, though.

A host nation and two teams full of white guys to avoid racist chants is a pretty good way to kick things off.

Crikey. Pour yourself a few schooners and stay up late. Greek soccer is worth suffering for!

Meh, I'm not going to take the time to learn the 1000 words Aussies have for a glass of beer.

edit: Speaking of Oz, they drew today with Oman in WC Qualifying.

Predictions!

I'm going with Holland to win it and Russia to be a surprise semi-finalist. I want to go with England as my surprise semi-finalist but if they really start Downing and Carroll I just can't pick them. Can not do it. Bearing that in mind, I predict Downing will have a fantastic tournament as yet another in a ceaseless barrage of reminders that I don't know what I'm talking about. Also, Huntelaar for the golden boot.
   228. zack Posted: June 08, 2012 at 11:24 AM (#4151597)
You have no idea.

I actually miss terribly the 285ml beer. It's the perfect amount for a serving, or get two at a time if you want to drop the shithammer.

   229. zack Posted: June 08, 2012 at 11:33 AM (#4151601)
I'll go with Italy as the surprise team to fail at the groups, and France as the surprise finalist.

Edit: I can see why they are increasing the participation to 24 teams next time. There really are no true minnows in the tournament, other than the horse[manure] of having both host teams as automatic qualifiers. Especially when there are only 16 slots, Ukraine and Poland should have had to play each other for the auto, and then the loser could enter regular qualifying.

Shooty speaks for me. I like the Dutch to win it and I think Russia has a nice path to the Semis.
   234. Mattbert Posted: June 08, 2012 at 11:53 AM (#4151626)
I'll take zee Germans to win and Croatia for a surprise semi-finalist.

I think England will make it out of their group comfortably and could even nick top spot if France disappoints against Sweden/Ukraine (I don't think they will). Regardless, though, England will almost certainly play one of Spain, Italy, or Croatia in the quarters. Never say never, but I would not expect them to have much of a chance against Spain and they'd be at best 50/50 shots to beat Italy and Croatia.
   235. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 08, 2012 at 11:53 AM (#4151627)
I actually have the Dutch as my surprise team to fail at the group stages, but I also see Russia into the semifinals, and perhaps further.

Got my twatball team submitted with about 90 seconds to spare. Whew. Although towards the end, I was just picking anybody I could find that I knew would play.

A: Poland, Czech Republic
B: Netherlands, Germany
C: Spain, Italy
D: France, Ukraine

Germany over Poland (just like always.)
Netherlands over Czech
Spain over Ukraine
Italy over France

Germany over Netherlands
Spain over Italy

Spain over Germany

Hasty prediction:

A: Poland, Russia
B: Germany, Holland
C: Spain, Croatia
D: France, England

Semis
Poland-Germany
France-Spain

France win it over Germany.

"Dont worry, they've got another Papadopoulos in reserve."
   252. Padgett Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:28 PM (#4151662)
I, too, like Germany to win it. My main hope is that there’s more attacking play than in South Africa. I’d also like to see up-and-comers like Eriksen, Götze, and Dzagoev actually live up to expectations. And I’d secretly like Ashley Cole to get a minor but nevertheless tournament-ending injury that gives Leighton Baines a chance to shine for England.
   253. Swedish Chef Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:37 PM (#4151669)

That was really harsh.
   260. The Kentucky Gentleman, Mark Edward Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:45 PM (#4151683)

   261. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:45 PM (#4151685)
That was a terrible call. Twatball for this game goes to the ref.
   262. Swedish Chef Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:46 PM (#4151686)
The first card was wrong, can't be that stupid on a card though.

Also, Sokratis should really use his glorious last name on his shirt.

The first card was wrong, can't be that stupid on a card though.

The second card was wronger. The Polish player was going to the ground because he slipped, not because he was fouled.
   264. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:47 PM (#4151688)
I didn't see anything even "stupid" about that second one. I thought that was very reasonable defending, I'm with Biff that wasn't even a foul let alone a yellow.
   265. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:47 PM (#4151689)

But he didn't do anything, how much more careful can he be?
   266. DA Baracus Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:48 PM (#4151691)
This is awful reffing, but I have Gekas in Twatball so keep 'em coming.
   267. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:48 PM (#4151692)
If a penalty was given for that bit of nothing, that would have been an even worse call than the red.
   268. Randy Jones Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:48 PM (#4151693)
This ref is ####### awful. Do UEFA and FIFA purposely choose the worst refs for major tournaments?
   269. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:50 PM (#4151695)
Despite the ref, Poland deserve the lead. They should be up 3-0 or something with how they dominated.
   270. Mattbert Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:53 PM (#4151697)
Neither is their group.

I agree. I also predicted they will come out of Group A, after all. However, the folks who have Russia making the semis (or more!) think they'll turn over Germany, l'Oranje, or even Portugal. At a minimum! I think that's a bridge too far for a fairly pedestrian side like the Rooskies.
   271. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:56 PM (#4151700)
Hey, Michael Ballack! They couldn't get Roberto Martinez again? He makes a good pundit.
   272. Mattbert Posted: June 08, 2012 at 12:58 PM (#4151702)
I feel like I've missed a trick in not picking any Greeks for my Twatball XI, despite the fact that they're always good for a wheelbarrow full of bookings. My fault for being ignorant as to who their regular starters are.

There was nothing even remotely rugby-ish about the play. At worst there was slight contact that might warrant a foul being called, but in reality the player was already slipping and falling.

He didn't do anything stupid other than to assume the ref was capable of making an intelligent decision there.
   276. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 08, 2012 at 01:09 PM (#4151711)

At worst there was slight contact that might warrant a foul being called, but in reality the player was already slipping and falling.

He pushed him down, classic thing to prevent the other player from regaining his balance. If he wouldn't have been able to regain it anyway, well that only makes it stupider, not less illegal.
   282. The Kentucky Gentleman, Mark Edward Posted: June 08, 2012 at 01:17 PM (#4151719)

Poland looks clueless when they play possession soccer. So much better on the counter.

   284. Baldrick Posted: June 08, 2012 at 01:19 PM (#4151726)
That's one of the worst sending-offs I've ever seen. The first wasn't even a foul and the second was barely so.

I'm rooting against Greece, but that's just ridiculously harsh.

Awful penalty. And now we're 10 on 10 for 20 minutes with the game tied.

(To be clear, I mean the penalty itself was awful, the decision to award it and the red card were clearly correct.)
