OT: The Soccer Thread: June

Euro 2012 Kicks Off!

Notable Early Round Matches:

Basically anything in Group B, which features teams currently ranked second, fourth, fifth and tenth in the FIFA rankings. That’s insane. Matchdays are June 9 (Saturday), 13 (Wednesday) and 17 (Sunday—Father’s Day). Don’t miss ‘em.

Pirlo seems to be responding to England dropping deep by going further forward to direct the attack from a better position.

Predictably, Welbeck is subbed off instead of Rooney despite the former playing much, much better than the latter.

Stays in line with how he picked the squad. Don't upset the pecking order.

The Hodgson double face palm with a massage!

It frustrates me the kind of contact they let the defending team get away with in the box. Also... this is the very rare game where I really don't have a favorite who wins.

Edit: Which is to say, I hate both of these teams. I am rooting for Germany in the tournament, so I guess I kind of want England to win since I don't really see how England could beat Germany. But Italy /Germany would be the much better game, and I'm only a mild Germany supporter.

Double edit: I like the country England fine, and the England/US relationship. So I'd like to root for them, but they have so many players that I simply can't root for. And their strategy is so negative. I have to imagine they are a very annoying team to root for for English natives.

If this goes to extra time Parker and Rooney are going to collapse on the pitch from exhaustion...

Looks like Henderson might be coming on soon...

Oh god... now Gerrard is down. How unfit are England's footballers?

England are only one counterattack away from winning this. Walcott and Carroll could easily mirror the Lennon-Crouch goal that beat Milan.

I think Rooney should have been on the end of that cross.

It's got to be kind of embarrassing to be introduced as a "Former West Ham United player".

Looked like the defender grabbed him a bit just when he wanted to jump and ###### up his timing.

Are they saving DiNatale for extra time? Is he hurt?

That's not a foul at all, certainly not a yellow.

Sandro is better. Jake Livermore will be by December the way he's progressing. Parker is a fine player but so, so overrated.

I appreciate what Scotty's done for Spurs this past year, but I think the prudent move would be to sell high and see if Chievo will sell Michael Bradley.

Italy have had something like 23 shots on goal, how they haven't scored I have no idea.

Did Wilshere play at all this year? He flashed some serious talent and athleticism last year when I saw him play. I actually think that if Van Persie returns that Arsenal is a sleeper pick for me. Surely they can find a center back or two right!?

He was Harry's boy 100%, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved. I would be shocked if Bradley is on Spurs' radar. Sandro, Livermore and Thud could get the job done. Sigurdsson, according to a couple of dodgy sites, is a done deal, BTW. Hope that's true as he looks a class player and it would be nice to have an honest to goodness threat on free kicks.

How much do you think he's worth? He sounds like he's by far the most popular player on the team. Captain America! I think you'd need to pay 15 million pounds. I think a team like Tottenham should look at Dempsey. He's in his prime, his prime is the next 2-3 years, and he wants to leave to play at the Tottenham level. I guess you could argue Bradley is more valuable. But Dempsey can go out and get you 20 goals. He's a sublime finisher.

Nope. He's had four or five "setbacks" and I wouldn't be shocked if it turned out his ankle was irreversibly ######.

It's really bad news for England that they're relying on Jordan Henderson in a quarterfinal against Italy.
   2031. Spivey Posted: June 24, 2012 at 04:44 PM (#4164992)
I think that today, Dempsey is better than VdV. It's close though. Either way, you could have both. Dempsey's super valuable, as I've realized while building Fulham into world powers on soccer games, in that he's very versatile. He can be a winger on each side, a withdrawn striker, and he's strong in the air and can play up front in pinch.

It may be a moot point as there are reports Spurs signed Gylfi Sigurdsson.

edit: I would love for Dempsey to be a Spur. I just don't think it's going to happen. Paying a lot of money for players his age just isn't the Spurs way.

I just realized something: the clock starts at 90 miutes again in extra time, right? no matter when regulation actually ended? That means two people could score goals at, say ,92 minutes. One guy for one team to equalize in regulation, then another guy in the second minute of extra time. Am I wrong? That seems odd.

Carroll is pretty good at winning the ball, if only he hadn't that ####### price tag as a millstone.

I think this is true of Italy's team. I think a lot of their attacking midfielders (read: every midfielder) all love to take 25 yard lashes at the ball, which pretty much requires a legendary shot to beat a keeper like Hart.

I like Carroll's game though. I like his work rate. I think the big price tag (and poor start with Liverpool) gave him a work ethic it didn't sound like he had before.

Didn't Italy win a world cup they had no business winning through PKs? I thought I remember Buffon being allowed to come off the line in a serious fashion. Though perhaps my state of perpetual drinking is confusing them with an Italian league team in some Champion's League game.

Kinda. England's back has still looked very shaky against top level teams. And if you consider Dempsey and Rooney playing the same position (fair, I think?) then I don't think England have actually shown the ability to put up big time goals.

Which is to say, when Rooney isn't in form (he didn't come into form in the WC or this Euro, despite generally being in form in the EPL the last few years) England just can't score.

In depth I agree. But England's starting 11 are bringing some dysfunction, some willingness to park the bus despite not being good at it, and generally mediocre play at every position.

One thing I'll say about the big-time US players is that they play well in tournaments.
