OT: The Soccer Thread: June

Euro 2012 Kicks Off!

Notable Early Round Matches:

Basically anything in Group B, which features teams currently ranked second, fourth, fifth and tenth in the FIFA rankings. That’s insane. Matchdays are June 9 (Saturday), 13 (Wednesday) and 17 (Sunday—Father’s Day). Don’t miss ‘em.

The 4 best teams in the tournament are in the semi-finals. That's a good thing, I think.

Agreed with Shooty in #2100 - penalties aren't much fun but Italy were the better side and I could see them putting up a better fight than England against Germany, even with less rest.

I hope the England players DON'T get crap the way the Russian players did. They did their best, they just lost. It's not a moral failing or unpatriotic to lose a game of soccer.

edited because I forgot an important word!

Well that was inevitable. Italy deserved to go through, they were better of the original ninety minutes.

England are laughably bad at penalties. It's just ridiculous.

Gerrard was just interviewed and started waffling about luck, which is why England fail at them. Taking penalties is a skill you can practice and get good at. It's not "luck".
   2108. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: June 24, 2012 at 05:35 PM (#4165116)
Well, you can get good at them, but when two teams full of stars square off in a shoout, who makes the most out of 5 is probably more or less luck.

I don't think England is a team full of stars. I think Italy is more or less a better attacking, scoring team. When you think of the EPL, the best goal scorers, not counting Rooney, are mostly imports.

I think people are going to take the loss in stride. It helped that Italy were ridiculously better in the second half and in extra-time, so there is no doubt the best team went through.

There is an element of luck to penalties (or pelanties if you're a certain ex-mulleted ex-England winger) but technique matters. The Ashleys both took terrible penalties. One needed to keep a cool head (see: Pirlo) and one needed to place the ball in a spot that's not easy for the goalkeeper to save.

That looks like a great crowd at NYRB vs DCU. Pretty surprising given (a) the baseball game tonight, and (b) they're only averaging ~16K on the season. Is the DCU/NYRB a bigger draw than I think it is, or what?

I've had to watch the games on replay due to family obligations, but I did hear one great story which everyone here will appreciate. I saw an old friend of my wife's and he told me that a friend of his had a son who was a good soccer player who played in college. The kid's hero was, for some reason, Oliver Kahn. After graduation the kid was traveling in Europe and sat down in a sidewalk cafe, where he was reading Portnoy’s Complaint. At some he noticed that the guy at the table next to him was looking at his book and he looked over to see why. It was Oliver Kahn. The kid was dumbstruck and said something to Kahn, who said, “Can we leave futbol and just talk about the book. I love Philip Roth.”

Who was it that did it in the World Cup? Because it happens so rarely it's a great move if you know the goalie is going to dive.

It was Uruguay's Sebastian Abreu. In his case it is really stupid because he literally always does it. The Ghana keeper just did not do his homework.

United/MetroStars (suck it NY!) is one of the bigger and older (for MLS) rivalries, they have a name for it.

There is nothing going on today. Booorrrring. Danny Murphy is off to Blackburn. The Yak is heading to China. What else? Rumors of Bellamy heading back to Cardiff which makes no sense to me considering his wages and he was Liverpool's most consistent attacker last year (by my eyes). No good Spurs rumors except everyone with more than 100 quid in their pocket is being rumored to investing in the team--AEG, Kuwaitis, Saudis, Phillip Green, Richard Branson, Charlie Sheen, Scrooge McDuck...

Messi won for 2011 (and 2010 and 2009); the vote isn't until December.

Galliani knows much too much about Silvio to ever lose his job. And it may well have been Berlusconi's idea in the first place to shed Pirlo.

I find the hype over Pirlo's penalty to be completely stupid. Yeah, it takes some balls, because if the keeper gets it, you look stupid... but you look stupid if you miss or have a poor shot saved anyway! And it takes zero skill, Shooty's girl could do it... Honestly to me, that penalty was about the least impressive thing Pirlo did yesterday...

Ah. Wouldn't it still be between Messi and John Terry, er, I mean Ronaldo? I would take Pirlo over Xavi or Inesta, though. Does anyone else have a case? Buffon? Ibrahimovic and RVP practically carried their teams on their backs. I can't think of a defender I'd put in the mix this year. No one seemed to have a year like Vidic did in 2011.

   2133. Juan V Posted: June 26, 2012 at 04:31 AM (#4166340)
Realistically, it's Ronnie or Leo. But depending on Germany closing the deal, how about Ozil or Mario Gomez as an outside choice?
   2134. ursus arctos Posted: June 26, 2012 at 06:37 AM (#4166348)
The thing is, the way the Ballon d'Or is currently set up, there has to be a third member of the short list, so what we are really talking about it is who that will be. I think that Pirlo now has the inside track, but Juan's suggestion of Ozil is certainly a good one (Gomez less so, in my book, unless he scores for fun in the next two matches), and the first several months of next season will also influence the ultimate decision.

The Drogba story appears to have been a complete red herring. He isn't in Barcelona, and his people say that he is leaving Miami for China later this week.

Because I'm a bad person, I enjoyed checking out RAWK to see their reactions to Bild's story of Sigurdsson heading to Spurs. It seems to have touched off an existential crisis about whether LFC is still a big club or not. Of course, the answer is that they are a big club and certainly bigger than THFC, and they may still end up with Sigurdsson, but it was a funny read anyway. It only took 24 hours from Gylfi to go from pure class to a shite player. From my perspective, it's always good to have a viking around so I hope Bild is not just full of their normal amount of BS.

Arsenal completed their signing of Giroud. Other than that, pretty quiet again. Tomorrow's game can't come soon enough.

You have to admire Sunderland's ambition.

"There's a huge, growing population – the biggest young population on the planet is in Africa, and they are football-mad," said Aidan Heavey, chief executive of Tullow Oil. "Sunderland will become the Premier League club in Africa. Everybody will be wearing the Sunderland shirt, every kid in every school will want a Sunderland shirt which says 'Invest in Africa', believe me. It will be the number one club, so what you are looking at is a huge market and huge exposure, and Sunderland will have that exposure.

"At a stroke, this association will make Sunderland the most popular club in Africa. At the moment, the usual clubs are the biggest, people like Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. But supporters right across Africa will now see the Invest In Africa logo on the front of Sunderland shirts and take pride in that. From now on, Sunderland will be their team."

My guess they'll be the most popular team in Africa the way Cardiff is the most popular team in Malaysia.

Benitez to Sampdoria?

That's kind of surprising, no? I'm surprised he hasn't gotten better offers--the LFC fiasco wasn't really his fault and he never had a chance to rework the squad at Inter. A reputation is a frail thing, I guess. Still glad he wasn't up for the Tottenham job, though.

Ha! Gylfi kisses the chicken badge! Nyah nyah nyah.

I'm interested in what Spurs and Arsenal do this summer. So far they've spent roughly the same amount of money (Spurs a little less) and Arsenal have brought in Podolski and Giroud and Spurs Gylfi and Vertonghen (assuming it gets done now that it's so close) and each team will probably lose their talisman. Arsenal have brought in the higher profile players but I don't think I could say which pair are better.

Does this mean RVP is gone? Bendtner, Chamakh and Vela are dead weight so once Wegner finds a taker for them, but where would Podolski and Giroud play? Wegner has Gervinho on the left and Theo on the right - with Ox ready to come in when one of them slips into bad form. Would he go to two strikers?

There have been reports that he agreed personal terms with Manchester City in March. The only open issue is the fee that Arsenal will receive.

Today's Modric rumor is him going to Madrid for Sahin and 30 million euro.

Oof. What's Italian for "Not cool, dude!"

Today's Modric rumor is him going to Madrid for Sahin and 30 million euro.

Yeah, that's been making the rounds but according to Spurs ITK (I know, I know) Sahin doesn't want to leave Real. It makes sense for everyone but maybe Sahin doesn't speak English and doesn't want to be isolated as the only Turk and German speaker on Spurs (though I guess VDV and Sigurdsson probably sprechen Deutsche a bit).

What kind of fee could Arsenal command? He's a transcendent player but he's in the last year of his deal and seems intent on leaving. It's going to be an epic game of chicken.

It's not a sexy spot like a Manhattan stadium would be, but it makes the most sense. It's easy to get to by car or subway and it would be convenient for a lot of people for whom NYRB Stadium isn't. I hope whoever gets the franchise is able to purchase the Cosmos brand as well, but that's a minor point, really. Just don't name the team after something douchey!

FSG now a multicontinental spin organization

I am amused that the assumption is Sigurdsson will get a bigger wage packet from Spurs than he would from Liverpool. Seems just as likely--if not more likely--that Sigurdsson (or his agent, anyway) is well aware that Liverpool have more money than Tottenham and therefore wants greater compensation if he's going to slum it with the second best team on Merseyside as opposed to the club that finished four places higher.

(It's been a while since we had a cheap shot at Liverpool in hopes of stirring AlouGoodbye from his slumber.)

From the article: Construction of a stadium could be completed in one to two years, although it needs approval by the New York City Council and the State Legislature.

Granted it will, hopefully, be easier because the stadium is (at least according the article linked) privately financed, but that's still a little bit like me saying my plan to have sex with Mila Kunis could be completed tonight, although it needs her approval.

Alright, it's time for the moment I know you've all been waiting for... my gambling picks for the semis. After picking 2 winners for the quarters at slightly below even odds each, I am feeling a tad more adventurous.

Portugal 7/2
Nani to score first goal 14/1
Italy 4/1

Also, I am busy talking myself into DeRossi to score first at 33/1.

BTW, I do think Germany and Spain are clear favs... but they are getting far too much respect from the bookies.

I always wonder about this, not being a gambler. I understand you bet against the odds, not the plurality result. Do you just rely on the fact that you place bets often enough for the long payoff? I guess there's no such thing as an occassional gambler (or not one that comes out in the black anyway).

FPH, are those full time prices or after 90 minutes? If the latter, is it a push if drawn after 90?

Those are both for the regular 90 mins. ET is a loss.

The 'to qualify' odds are:
Spain 2/5 Portugal 7/4
Germany 4/11 Italy 2/1

To bet on either Spain or Germany to go through you have to think either can win more than 70% of the time.

I really think Germany/Italy is going to be an open game with plenty goals, which pushes down the likelihood for a draw. So I really prefer the regulation time odds in that game. Certainly, I think they can win one out of five games. And I think a longer game suits the Spanish more. The way both teams play, I think Portugal is going to be the one that tires first.

BTW, I am really looking forward to see what tactical super-genius Löw does against the Italian monkey-wrench-formation. You would think if anybody can crack that nut on short notice, it would be him. I am glad Italy made it through for that reason alone. Löw was never going to lose with the better players against a 4-4-2 anyway. That's like challenging a grandmaster at chess after only just learning to play checkers.

Pretty much. Football season is long, and there are tons of leagues. If you look at e.g. the Portugal odds, you are betting on them to win 1 out of 5. It really doesn't take that long to straighten itself out if you bet 5 games a week.

Edit: And it's not like you should only be taking long shots. You bet where there is value. In the QF's I had Spain to win outright, and Italy to qualify (played it perfectly I might add). Both of those were about 10/11.

All I know is I'm chugging a beer every time the camera catches the genius with his finger knuckle-deep

For a second I was worried about how that sentence was going to end...

Bale signs a new four year deal with Tottenham.

He has now signed long-term deals in May 2010, March 2011 and June 2012. His agent has a nice racket going there.

Or however the #### MLS works now.

That maybe was the best "fixed that for you" I've ever seen.

Well Spain is starting Negredo.

Well Spain is starting Negredo.

He'll be playing as a defensive mid though.

Not a great singer that Ronaldo. Simon Cowell is not impressed.

I like that high pressure from Portugal.

I like that high pressure from Portugal.

Yeah, I like to see someone try to pressure them.

Portugal are really compressing the space and forcing mistakes. I wonder if they can keep it up?

I think it's more a kick in the teeth to Llorente than Torres.

A good plan from Portugal - making Spain play long balls.

Casillas hoofing the ball. Wow!

Spain look distinctly off their game and Portugal are doing really well so far.

Almost a breakthrough for Portugal there, and they deserve it for taking it to Spain I think.

I'm surprised Nani is still alive since he seems to get concussed every time he hits the grass.

I saw that in the break room walking by - the only thing I could think of was that he blew by the last three guys only because they stopped after an early whistle. Dumb, though, to blow it so quickly...

Portugal look like Spain on defense. They are really determined.
   2186. Swedish Chef Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:30 PM (#4167897)
Not as determined as Sergio Ramos earning twatpoints by the dozen there.

He just wants me to finish respectably!

This is a really interesting game. Are Portugal fit enough to keep up the pressure? Anyone have the passing stats for Spain handy? I'm guessing--relative to Spain's standards--they're terrible.

I wonder what goes through Ballack's head when Lalas says something like "HP Sauce"?
   2190. Swedish Chef Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:39 PM (#4167916)
I think the most impressive part of the Portugese pressure has been how economical it has been, they haven't run to and fro like hyperenergized bunnies as a British team told to press would, they have just closed in on the ball wherever it has been on the pitch. It also turns out Piquet especially isn't all that good at tiki-taka when he has to cope with players not on his team nearby.

Forwardless football returns for Spain

Maybe Spain can do better now that they are playing with 11 men.

I think it's Spain that has largely quit dilly-dallying in their own half.

I don't think that was a dive. He just lost his balance trying to get position on Ramos there.

This is a veritable twatballer orgy!
