OT: The Soccer Thread: June

Euro 2012 Kicks Off!

Notable Early Round Matches:

Basically anything in Group B, which features teams currently ranked second, fourth, fifth and tenth in the FIFA rankings. That’s insane. Matchdays are June 9 (Saturday), 13 (Wednesday) and 17 (Sunday—Father’s Day). Don’t miss ‘em.

We're in 7th place in twatball. Not bad for a bunch of baseball nerds!

Back from SABR and predicting Italy 2 - Spain 1

Kidbert has backed Italy to win 30-3. Update your spreadsheets accordingly.

Andrea Pirlo can pass for a 53 year old. I can't imagine looking like that when I'm 33 in six years.

Also not sure if this was mentioned but Egypt was knocked out of an opportunity to play in the 2013 Cup of Nations after losing to the Central African Republic. I won't pretend to know whether Egypt or the CAR is the better team, but an almost 50-position difference in Fifa rankings seems to make this a bit of an upset.

Ok, so now that the game's started I realized I'm cheering for Italy. But mainly I'm cheering for a good, well matched, exciting game that doesn't go to PKs.

Kidbert expecting a save for Wes Littleton too?

Egypt seems to be cursed when it comes to missing out on big international tournaments at the last moment.
2409. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: July 01, 2012 at 02:57 PM (#4170636)
Spain are playing so quickly right now.

"Caressing passes across the turf."

50 Shades of Play? Who's Spain's inner goddess?

If Italy wins, then by the transitive property of victories, the US should be Euro Champions given our 1-0 victory.

Nice nice goal by Spain.

Wow, what a boring team Spain is.

2412. Borussia, Du bist so wunderschön! (Mark Edward) Posted: July 01, 2012 at 03:01 PM (#4170641)
That was pretty.
2413. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: July 01, 2012 at 03:01 PM (#4170642)
that was coming. Spain are playing 4 speeds faster than they have the rest of the tournament.
2414. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: July 01, 2012 at 03:01 PM (#4170644)
Well that was coming. Spain have looked more aggressive than usual at trying to get balls through.

Hell, the US won a competitive game against Spain fairly recently, so you can crown yourself whatever happens.

I was thinking about this today. I think the problem is that games involving Soain are often boring. Teams are too willing to let Spain have possession. Italy seems willing to be aggressive which may not work but should be entertaining.
2417. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: July 01, 2012 at 03:04 PM (#4170647)
And ESPN just blew up.

It is weird to think that the US is the last team to knock Spain out of a tournament.

Being an Italian and all, you'd think Prandelli would know how to tie a tie properly.

Hey, Macca is stealing my lines.

You get the feeling Italy aren't done yet here. Let's hope we have a back and forth.

De Rossi is totally bossing this game now. Beast.
2435. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: July 01, 2012 at 03:22 PM (#4170676)
Yeah, feels like Italy have a goal in them, they just need to not get caught on the counter. Vthe other issue could be fatigue, tough to chase the game for to long against these guys.
2436. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: July 01, 2012 at 03:28 PM (#4170681)
And there's the knockout punch...

But try extremely hard to look like you aren't trying too hard, rather than not actually trying too hard and going for the Rab C. Nesbitt look.

This sounds like a lot of work. Think I'll just go for the Newcastle United fan look--get fat, lose all my hair, get several large, ugly tattoos and then walk around shirtless.

OK old guys, does Spain hold a candle to '70 Brazil?

2457. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: July 01, 2012 at 03:57 PM (#4170725)
Looking at the replay, Casillas did a great job to read that Di Natale shot.

I think you need to go one World Cup later to find the best team ever, if you ask me. Not that you are!

I was going to mention them, but it seems a lot of people think the runners up were better so I didn't want to risk it.

2462. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: July 01, 2012 at 04:05 PM (#4170737)

Those people are too clever by half. My only religion is Total Football - I've got the games, I've got the shirt(s), I've got the coaching science books. I sit in my house on weekends and watch Holland friendlies from the 70s in the original Dutch.

Germany were better. And their '72 vintage with Netzer was the most dominant Euro team of all time (though the format was totally different), even more than this Spain team.
2465. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: July 01, 2012 at 04:10 PM (#4170744)
Italy have had their chances. My sense is that Casillas is a bit under appreciated, he takes control well and I think his ability to stay focused and be ready for the rare opposition chances seems very valuable.

The 70's seem like they were a Golden Age of international soccer. Too bad they had to have the 78 Cup in Argentina.

Shame for Italy because they had to spend a substitution because of the Chiellini injury as well and were doing so much better at the start of the second half (I still thought Spain would win at that point, but a nervy 2-1 win or so).

Still, Spain were really good as well and showed that they weren't just tiki-taka.

I have to say, also, that Italy were much less cynical than they were at the 2010 World Cup. They get a lot of crap for dives and gamesmanship when they do it, but I thought they played this tournament fairly straight up. I don't know if that's down to Prandelli or what.
2489. Obi One Kenobi Nil Posted: July 01, 2012 at 04:55 PM (#4170800)
Prandelli, I think. Don't remember Fiorentina being particularly cynical when he was in charge.
   2490. Baldrick Posted: July 01, 2012 at 05:00 PM (#4170804)
I think this clarifies once and for all that Spain have never really been 'boring.' They have just been so good that the teams who play them have insisted on playing boring games. When someone goes at them, Spain are absolutely glorious.

Italy were really really good today. And they got slaughtered.

The injury was really a shame though. The game was basically decided right then. It would have been nice to see Italy keep going after them like they did for the opening 10 minutes of the second half.
   2491. Flynn Posted: July 01, 2012 at 05:11 PM (#4170811)
Italy only really pull the gamesmanship when they think they can't win.

Sometimes it works and they do win and those performances go down in history - whoever dived against the Aussies in 2006, Gentile's famous demolition of Maradona in '82 via endless shirt-pulling and petty fouling - but most of their best wins are straight up. They weren't flopping around against Brazil in '82, nor against Germany in '06.
   2492. Spivey Posted: July 01, 2012 at 05:56 PM (#4170837)

My thought exactly. Italy tried to play Spain straight up and got abused. Italy didn't play poorly either. But even at 2-0 I thought Spain was more likely to score again than Italy to score. The DiNatale shot where he was played through he looked offside to me on replay. I think Spain gave an all-time great performance today. I respect the hell out of Italy trying to play them straight up - they just couldn't. Also, Pirlo is a great free kicker but I think he was pretty seriously outplayed by Xavi today and generally didn't have near the tournament people were acting like he did.

Italy was in form, played in form, and still got throttled. Spain is incredible. They're still a clear step above the Portugal, Italy, and Germany's of the world.
   2493. Spivey Posted: July 01, 2012 at 05:57 PM (#4170839)
This isn't just the US fan in me talking, but the 2006 World Cup was probably the worst world cup I can remember, both in terms of quality and excitement of matches.

Emphatic and very much deserved.

This a historically significant football team.

Italy over-achieved, and should be able to build on this performance.

There has been much talk in the German press about the current team being the best German one ever - I kid you not. That has somewhat quieted in the last few days though...

If anyone is bored and looking to kill a couple of hours watching a fun, back-and-forth match, I *heartily* recommend last night's Galaxy vs Earthquakes match, available on ESPN3.

Not the greatest quality of play in the world, but very, VERY entertaining.
2497. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: July 01, 2012 at 09:21 PM (#4170939)
Also ... I don't know if anyone else has discovered this, but if you begin watching a match that's currently available on ESPN3 replay and then open the event schedule and select 'All', there are something like 150+ matches available, stretching all the way back to January (otherwise, you can only get about a month's worth of games).

Another match well worth watching, if you missed it the 1st time around, Dortmund vs Stuttgart on 3/30.

Something to kill the time until leagues heat up again, at the least ...

Entertaining, yes. But that was a clinic on how not to defend.

You think the Spaniards were annoyed at being labelled dull and boring, and made an example out of Italy?

As for Best Team Ever, I decided to take a look at Eloratings. Right now, Spain are at 2132 points (actually, their highest ever score came after winning in Joburg, at 2140). The teams that have achieved a higher score are 50s Hungary and 60s Brazil. Considering international football has become more competitive since then, and Spain's score has been kept down by losing most of their high-profile friendlies since the World Cup (and, after all, friendlies aren't entirely about winning), I'd tip them.

Spain conceded one goal in the entire tournament. In the first game. They scored 12 goals. That's the most goals scored and the fewest conceded. It's also the fewest EVER conceded in the tournament.

They haven't allowed a goal in a knockout game of a major tournament since the 2006 World Cup. That's 10 consecutive games, I believe.

They're really good.
