YESSSSSS!

WOW!!!!!!
1803. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:02 PM (#4727730)
That is just a great move by Dempsey. Wow I wasn't expecting that.
   1804. Lassus Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:02 PM (#4727731)
I don't watch as often as many many of you freaks, but that seemed like sleepwalking defense by #21 from Ghana. His fault, or someone else's, experts?
   1805. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:03 PM (#4727732)
Pure class from Dempsey!!!
1806. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:03 PM (#4727733)
Who had 30 seconds? I DID! (Kidding.)
   1807. ursus arctos Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:05 PM (#4727734)
Lassus, yes, shambolic defending.
   1808. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:06 PM (#4727735)
I don't watch as often as many many of you freaks, but that seemed like sleepwalking defense by #21 from Ghana. His fault, or someone else's, experts?

He seemed worried about picking up a penalty on Dempsey. But yeah, since he was beat one on one, his fault.

It wasn't good, but I think he was caught off balance (by a really nice move from Dempsey) and didn't want to risk the penalty kick/red card combo.
1810. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:10 PM (#4727739)
Everyone roared when Beasley fell down but I thought he did a nice job there, funneled the Ghana player into the help. Would prefer he stay on his feet of course but it wasn't a terrible play.
1811. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:12 PM (#4727740)
The goal helps I'm sure but I am impressed with how composed we look. We just don't seem to be running around a lot, it's very comfortable ball movement and when we give it away just getting back in a good defensive formation.
   1812. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:14 PM (#4727742)
I wasn't expecting a "statistics vs. intangibles" riff during this game. I'm not sure why.
   1813. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:15 PM (#4727743)
Nice play by Howard, but why are they playing so passively?
1814. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:15 PM (#4727744)
ooh that was dangerous. We got a little flat-footed there. Nice play by Howard.
1815. President of the David Eckstein Fan Club Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:16 PM (#4727745)
Ghana hasn't looked all that threatening but neither have we since the goal
   1816. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:17 PM (#4727746)
Ghana hasn't looked all that threatening but neither have we since the goal

Disagree. Ghana looks like they can get in the zone easily from their offensive right/US's left.
   1817. JJ1986 Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:17 PM (#4727747)
I have been pleased with almost all of the announcing so far in the World Cup, but the analyst in this game is a cliche-spouting machine with nothing useful to say.
   1818. Dale Sams Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:17 PM (#4727748)
U.S. are acting like the ball is radioactive.
1819. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:17 PM (#4727749)
Yeah "composed" seems to have given way to "passive."
1820. Darkness and the howling fantods Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:18 PM (#4727750)
Ghana hasn't looked all that threatening but neither have we since the goal
Yeah, I'm not sure the US has the personnel to sit this deep and play on the counter effectively.
   1821. Dale Sams Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:18 PM (#4727751)
Stop ####### throwing away possesions!
1822. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:19 PM (#4727753)
Oh, ####. That was a huge opportunity.
   1823. zack Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:19 PM (#4727754)
We could really use some possession for a few minutes.
1824. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:20 PM (#4727755)
That was nice. Even without the finish I'm encouraged by how comfortable Jozy looked on that. Rather than rushing it or alternatively farting around with it he just made a nice one touch and shoot.
   1825. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:20 PM (#4727756)
Cameron's headers are not inducing confidence. Neither is the US's complete lack of possession.
1826. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:21 PM (#4727758)
####. ####. ####.

1835. Darkness and the howling fantods Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:23 PM (#4727767)
Man I feel bad for Jozy.
   1836. Dale Sams Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:23 PM (#4727768)
A hamstring like that? He's done.

In a deep run and wrapped like a mummy, maybe he could limp around in 10 days.
   1837. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:23 PM (#4727769)
Earth to the announcers: Jozy can't play well as a targetman either.

Still a big loss.
   1838. Sunday silence Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:24 PM (#4727770)
do we expect it to rain later on here...
1839. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:25 PM (#4727771)
I don't know anything about roster adjustments during the WC. What's the rule, that you just go with the 23 you bring? No adjustments?
1840. Darkness and the howling fantods Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:26 PM (#4727772)
Hope that doesn't rattle the US too much.
1841. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:26 PM (#4727773)
Why is Bedoya starting over Zusi?
1842. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:27 PM (#4727774)

Yep.

I believe the deadline for injury replacements is 24 hours before a team's first game. So no replacement.
1844. greenback calls it soccer Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:29 PM (#4727776)
Ghana looks like they can get in the zone easily from their offensive right/US's left.

Their game plan isn't subtle, is it?
   1845. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:29 PM (#4727778)
Diamond Joe Biden sighting!
1846. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:30 PM (#4727780)
The us is playing a diamond - they would be better off as a 4-2-3-1. Even if Dempsey is lazy. Maybe johanson will put in a shift on the left.
1847. greenback calls it soccer Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:32 PM (#4727781)
Nice hair after the elbow to the face.
   1848. Sunday silence Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:32 PM (#4727782)
huge save there
   1849. Dale Sams Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:32 PM (#4727783)
It amazes me that this is a WC team with a supposedly good coach...and the US just keeps turning the ball over without even being under pressure.
1850. Darkness and the howling fantods Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:33 PM (#4727784)
Ouch
   1851. JJ1986 Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:34 PM (#4727785)
Definitely could not have used Landon Donovan on this squad.
1852. Darkness and the howling fantods Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:35 PM (#4727787)
The us is playing a diamond - they would be better off as a 4-2-3-1.
Bradley is playing so deep that it seems more like a traditional 4-4-2. I think that's part of why they're finding it so hard to keep the ball.
   1853. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:35 PM (#4727788)
Intentional, or incidental?
   1854. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:36 PM (#4727789)
So many sloppy passes, touches, clearances, etc. US need to improve to hold this lead.
   1855. zack Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:36 PM (#4727790)
What reason does he have to get his leg up there? The ball hit him in the face.
1856. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:37 PM (#4727791)
Man I don't think we have had more than 2 passes in a row in this game.
   1857. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:38 PM (#4727793)
Even Bradley keeps giving the ball away.
   1858. zack Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:40 PM (#4727795)
Hell, the first pass is often beyond them.
1859. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:41 PM (#4727796)
Christ no Omar!

Oh good, now Besler's hurt!
1861. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:41 PM (#4727798)
They are extremely lucky to still be up right now. Come on USA, stop being terrible.
   1862. Dale Sams Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:41 PM (#4727799)
2 on 4! Stop playing like a GD Sunday league team.
   1863. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:41 PM (#4727800)
US Possessions are wasteful.
1864. greenback calls it soccer Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:44 PM (#4727802)
That's cruel, Howard.

That was a dreadful free kick.
   1865. Dale Sams Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:45 PM (#4727803)
Good job #13. Stop letting them hang on you and clobber your legs.
1866. Darkness and the howling fantods Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:48 PM (#4727804)
How is that not a card for Muntari?
1867. President of the David Eckstein Fan Club Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:50 PM (#4727806)
Should have been a card on Muntari.

US continuing to waste possession though, that should have been a good chance at a break but it was completely bungled.
   1868. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:50 PM (#4727807)
US can't keep playing this way in the second half and expect to not concede a goal. Though it has to be said that Ghana don't seem to have much of an offensive strategy other than crosses from the right.
1869. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:51 PM (#4727808)
Ghana look awful. That's pretty much the only good news.

You know who this team could really use? Landon Donovan.
1870. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:51 PM (#4727809)
I thought the ref handled it right. Jones could have gotten a card too.

Not really pretty but I'll take the lead. Little concerned to see two players pull up with hammie injuries.
   1871. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:51 PM (#4727810)
US with the lead, but with a lot of problems to solve at half time.

Edit: Agree that the ref made the right move. Jones did kick him in the head.
1872. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:52 PM (#4727811)
"Waste" isn't the right word - more like diarrhea.
   1873. Lassus Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:52 PM (#4727812)
That offensive effort off the pass seconds from the end of the half was somnabulistically reminiscent of the defensive effort seconds into the half.
   1874. Langer Monk Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:53 PM (#4727813)
I have to say, Jermaine Jones has completely turned my opinion on him all the way around.

If they would just stop turning over the ball, they can break down the Ghana defense often. And Beasley needs some help on the left. Well, "some" or "a ton of".
1875. Darkness and the howling fantods Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:53 PM (#4727814)
One thing I've always wondered: what is the origin of "fluffed their lines"? Is it a theater term?
   1876. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:56 PM (#4727815)
One thing I've always wondered: what is the origin of "fluffed their lines"? Is it a theater term?

Way the US is playing, more like a porn term.

If they would just stop turning over the ball, they can break down the Ghana defense often. And Beasley needs some help on the left. Well, "some" or "a ton of".

I think the US needs a fifth midfielder.
1877. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:58 PM (#4727816)
Dear USA, please play better lest you kill me. Thanks, shooty.
   1878. DA Baracus Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:59 PM (#4727817)
Ghana simultaneously looks like they could score a couple of goals and that they can't give themselves two good goal scoring opportunities.
   1879. Dale Sams Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:59 PM (#4727818)
US needs to stop the Sunday League mentality of GO!GO!GO!
   1880. Langer Monk Posted: June 16, 2014 at 06:59 PM (#4727819)
Also, Clint Dempsey would make a great hockey player - I'm pretty sure that nose was broken.
   1881. DA Baracus Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:01 PM (#4727820)
Brooks coming in for Besler.
1882. Darkness and the howling fantods Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:01 PM (#4727821)

If they would just stop turning over the ball, they can break down the Ghana defense often. And Beasley needs some help on the left. Well, "some" or "a ton of".
Theoretically, that's why Jones is playing over there (it's definitely not for his attacking play, assist notwithstanding). But he got caught both forward and in the middle a couple of times and left Beasley on his own.
1883. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:03 PM (#4727822)
Omg - brooks is by default better than Omar but two subs on injuries in one half is really bad news.
   1884. Langer Monk Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:03 PM (#4727823)
He did, but that's also the problem with the diamond, if that's really what they are trying to play - so much ground to cover.

Bradley needs to start controlling this game if they are going to survive.
1885. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:05 PM (#4727824)
Bradley needs to start controlling this game if they are going to survive.

Agreed and I think the first half was as bad as I can remember him looking for the US. He was unimpressive in that half and he's normally so reliable.
   1886. Dale Sams Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:07 PM (#4727826)
And they throw the ball away after 6 seconds.
1887. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:09 PM (#4727827)
US are taking their sweet time already on dead ball situations.
1888. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:09 PM (#4727828)
This is going to be an awful half, isn't it?

1891. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:13 PM (#4727833)
Bedoya has been our best player. That blows my mind.

eta: Well, our best attacking player.
   1892. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:15 PM (#4727834)
Bradley needs to start controlling this game if they are going to survive.

Yes. Bradley has been invisible.

The US is parking the bus waaaaay too early. Play a little more positively until minute 75 or so.
   1893. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:15 PM (#4727835)
Bradley forgot how to pass and now Bedoya is hurt too. For ####'s sake.

####, I need another drink. We don't deserve any points from today.
   1896. Lassus Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:16 PM (#4727839)
Whoa. That was a rocket.
   1897. tshipman Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:17 PM (#4727840)
Jesus, I thought match fitness was supposed to be our biggest strength.
1898. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:17 PM (#4727841)
If we don't concede in the next two minutes, it's amazing. What the #### happened there.
   1899. DA Baracus Posted: June 16, 2014 at 07:17 PM (#4727842)
Brooks looks terrible.

Bradley is dropping too deep, Jones shouldn't be in front of him.
