Rooney has not had the best of luck...
   2902. zack Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:11 PM (#4730835)
I think he also had a lot more time than he thought, just kind of chipped it.
   2903. Richard Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:12 PM (#4730836)
That was a really good save
   2904. AuntBea Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:13 PM (#4730837)
Good save, but Rooney should have scored. he had a wide goal.
2905. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:13 PM (#4730839)
Zlatan, as always, is unimpressed.
   2906. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:15 PM (#4730841)
Yeah, a top class player should score that more often than not. It wasn't terribly easy, but it ought to go in.
   2907. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:17 PM (#4730843)
Is he unconscious? WTF happened?

Oh, just saw it. Jesus God.
   2908. AuntBea Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:18 PM (#4730845)
Holy ####. He looks in bad shape.
   2909. The Marksist Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:18 PM (#4730846)
That sucks. He should not come back on.
   2910. madvillain Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:19 PM (#4730847)
@BBC Wayne Rooney completes the "Enlish hat trick"

1) left foot miss
2) right foot miss
3) headed miss
   2911. jmurph Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:19 PM (#4730850)
Who is injured? Only following the score...
   2912. The Marksist Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:20 PM (#4730851)
Aaaaand, he's back on.
   2913. AuntBea Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:20 PM (#4730852)
Did he come back in the game? That's criminal.
   2914. Dale Sams Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:20 PM (#4730853)
THIS is why you to to wait a second before you accuse a player of faking.

I thought he was dead for a second.
   2915. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:20 PM (#4730854)
Who is injured? Only following the score...

Pereira. A sharp kick to the head. He should NOT come back on.
   2916. AuntBea Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:20 PM (#4730856)
He will not remember this game afterward. Clearly concussed. This makes me sad.
   2917. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:21 PM (#4730859)
"I have an idea. I do believe I will pooch a dribbler right at the keeper. If we do that often enough, eventually it will just do a quantum phase through his legs."
   2918. zack Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:21 PM (#4730860)
I wasn't playing attention the last few, why was Sterling coming off? He looked as dangerous as anyone.
2919. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:22 PM (#4730861)
How many balls will England hit that go right at Muslera?
   2920. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:23 PM (#4730862)

Color me confused. Walbeck is clearly the man to pull, he's been terrible.

The physio was clearly trying to keep him off too. The officials shouldn't let a player back on unless the physio approves it.
   2922. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:24 PM (#4730864)
Not a good tackle, but I'm not sure I buy a card on that.
   2923. AuntBea Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:25 PM (#4730868)
The physio was clearly trying to keep him off too. The officials shouldn't let a player back on unless the physio approves it.

Absolutely, the system clearly doesn't work. The team overruled the physio, which has to be absolutely forbidden or the situation will never improve.
   2924. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:27 PM (#4730870)
This is overdue. Welbeck off.
   2925. The Marksist Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:27 PM (#4730872)
Refereeing has been pretty uneven, yeah? Not biased, exactly, just inconsistent.
2926. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:30 PM (#4730876)
I think Lallana is a good player, but is he really England's last and best hope?
   2927. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:30 PM (#4730877)
I've grown to have serious distaste for this Godin character.
   2928. Richard Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:30 PM (#4730878)
Yes he is. Who else is there?
2929. Fancy Pants Handles lap changes with class Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:31 PM (#4730879)
Do you believe in miracles :P
   2930. Richard Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:31 PM (#4730880)
Rooney!
   2931. Richard Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4730884)
Well done Johnson
   2932. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4730885)
Hallelujah, holy ####. Where's the Tylenol?
   2933. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4730886)
Refereeing has been pretty uneven, yeah? Not biased, exactly, just inconsistent.

Pretty bad job. Stuff is a yellow in some cases or not a foul in others.

Oh hey, a weakly-hit shot right at the keeper. Why didn't they think of that before?!
   2934. Howling John Shade Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4730887)
England's two most reviled players come up big.
2935. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4730889)
Omg he really did it!
   2936. zack Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4730890)
That was beautiful from Sturridge and Johnson. You could almost smell how mechanical Rooney was about tapping that in.
   2937. Dale Sams Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4730891)
I must be behind you guys by minutes
   2938. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4730893)
Hmm, my feed is quite a bit behind the live broadcast it seems...
   2939. madvillain Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:33 PM (#4730894)
Couldn't miss that one!
   2940. Randy Jones Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:34 PM (#4730895)
The espn3 feed is a couple minutes behind the TV feed.
   2941. Richard Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:34 PM (#4730896)
Sturridge is having a great half
   2942. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:34 PM (#4730897)
That was a pretty glorious cross.
   2943. AuntBea Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:35 PM (#4730898)
Uruguay needs the next goal much worse than England, but you wouldn't know that by the way the teams are playing right now.
   2944. Dale Sams Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:35 PM (#4730899)
Across the body and with his left foot even. Nice.
2945. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:35 PM (#4730900)
I guess Lallana is the only choice. I believe the Ox is still hurt - that's some poor roster construction (sounds like the US).
   2946. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:36 PM (#4730902)
Pereira off, thank god
   2947. Howling John Shade Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:41 PM (#4730910)
Wowsers.
   2948. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:41 PM (#4730911)
That was the saddest thing I've ever seen.
   2949. The Marksist Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:41 PM (#4730912)
yikes.
   2950. The Marksist Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:41 PM (#4730913)
Why wasn't he starting the first match? Looks fit to me.
   2951. SteveF Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:42 PM (#4730916)
Suarez can sure finish.
   2952. Richard Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:42 PM (#4730917)
Nice goal, but Cahill and Jagielka should be ashamed of themselves.
   2953. Howling John Shade Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:43 PM (#4730919)
If that was a Cavani flick-on Suarez would have been offside, but it looked like it was off Gerrard.
   2954. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:43 PM (#4730920)
Offside, no?
   2955. Howling John Shade Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:44 PM (#4730921)
Nice goal, but Cahill and Jagielka should be ashamed of themselves.
I think they were holding the offside line but Gerrard nodded it on.
   2956. The Marksist Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:44 PM (#4730922)
He's one of the best in the world. You kinda have to know where he is.
   2957. Richard Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:44 PM (#4730923)
Ricky Lambert - a very English response to going a goal down
   2958. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:44 PM (#4730924)
Oh, LOL, Gerrard.
   2959. Dale Sams Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:44 PM (#4730925)
Welp guess I'll start an FM 13 game with me as England manager
   2960. jmurph Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:45 PM (#4730927)
So thinking this through as I type, England still comfortably alive, remarkably, after this one. Assuming Italy handle Costa Rica and Uruguay lose to Italy and England beat Costa Rica, it will go down to GD. That said, again, I think Costa Rica looked very good in their opener and could steal another point from someone.
   2961. zack Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:46 PM (#4730930)

MCoA has them as ~7% to advance with a loss here.
   2962. SteveF Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:47 PM (#4730934)
Someone is very likely to get a point off Italy, especially in that last match.
2963. Big Ears Teddy shouldn't see TFTIO Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:48 PM (#4730936)
I have no particular interest in either of these teams, but I'd like to see Costa Rica go through.

Right, if Italy beat Costa Rica, they're obviously fielding their weakest squad against Uruguay, since they would have the group wrapped up.
2965. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:54 PM (#4730942)
Poor England.

Article about all the Germans on the National Team.

A little tidbit about Zelalem:
The next recruiting target for Klinsmann and Herzog is Gedion Zelalem, a precocious 17-year-old attacking midfielder who has already played for the first team at Arsenal. Born in Germany to Ethiopian parents, Zelalem lived from age 9 to 15 in the Washington D.C. area. If his father, Woldyes, becomes a U.S. citizen before Gedion turns 18 next January—and sources say Woldyes is attempting to do so—then Gedion would automatically become a U.S. citizen per the Child Citizenship Act of 2000.

The guy has played for Arsenal about as much as Green played for Bayern (maybe even less), but I've watched him in a couple friendlies and he looks very composed. .
   2966. DA Baracus Posted: June 19, 2014 at 04:59 PM (#4730947)
Yeah Zelalem is the next big next big thing. We'll see what happens when he actually plays.

He's a stud. The sort of player the US has been looking for seemingly forever. Technically he's ready for the EPL now. Physically it might be a few years. His dad was seen with a UMSNT jersey the other day on Facebook. In his interviews he's American as apple pie, even in his Arsenal academy profile he sounds like an American kid talking as he pantomimes basketball cross overs and jumpers with the soccer ball.

Can't wait to bring him into the fold.
   2968. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 05:04 PM (#4730952)
Poor England. They probably deserved a point there. Should have been playing against 10 men for a big chunk of the game.

But they didn't really play well enough in either of these games for it to feel like a particularly grave injustice.
   2969. Dale Sams Posted: June 19, 2014 at 05:07 PM (#4730959)
New World vs Everyone else now 9-2-1. Man, HFA in Soccer is crazy.

   2971. cmd600 Posted: June 19, 2014 at 05:10 PM (#4730965)
Not that I'm unhappy to ever see England lose, but that awful non-yellow looms huge. It will be tough to convince me that England wouldn't have all three points if the correct call is made.
   2972. Howling John Shade Posted: June 19, 2014 at 05:10 PM (#4730968)

Yeah, they deserve more than 0 points based on their performance so far, but it's not like they dominated either match.
   2973. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 05:49 PM (#4731004)
8 of the last 16 games have finished 2-1.
   2974. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 05:59 PM (#4731016)
In 4 years, will someone remind me to quit rooting for England? It's not worth it, ancestral ties or no.
2975. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:13 PM (#4731021)
When was the last time England had a likable, genuine star?
   2976. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:16 PM (#4731024)
I always liked Gerrard, but he's never really sparkled the way some other dudes have.
   2977. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:18 PM (#4731028)
How many likable genuine stars are there in the world?

Balotelli? Zlatan? Nut sure I'd like them if I met them, though.
2979. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:23 PM (#4731034)
Ronaldinho and kaka? Messi. Xavi and Iniesta I guess?
2980. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:33 PM (#4731043)
Just finished watching...am I correct that Suarez was onside because the ball hit Gerard? Macca and Darke were too upset to really make it clear. If so, well, that's pretty horrible luck.
   2981. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:37 PM (#4731047)
Japan-Greece has been more exciting than you'd expect. Which is to say: still not very exciting at all. Japan look much better, but have a serious case of the Arsenals.
   2982. ursus arctos Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:38 PM (#4731048)
Shooty, yes. Gerrard got the assist.
   2983. zack Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:39 PM (#4731050)
Second yellow for Katsouranis for a much less egregious tackle than in the last game. And Japan with apparently 77% of the possession, sheesh.
   2984. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:40 PM (#4731052)
Red card! Greece are down to 10 men.

Two pretty clear yellow cards adds up to one red. And a referee with guts is willing to show a card. Sadly, this will probably just cause Greece to bunker up even more.

Except as I write this, they almost score!
2985. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:41 PM (#4731053)
Jeez, a tough couple of months for Gerrard, then. I guess that's karma for his poor taste in karaoke.
   2986. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:42 PM (#4731054)
And Greece already had to make a substitution. And now they're making another tactical one, so they've only got one left for the final 50 minutes.
   2987. madvillain Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:43 PM (#4731056)
Messi

Messi seems like a ####### asshat from what I've read.
   2988. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:44 PM (#4731058)
What's the average height of the Japanese team? 5'6? Maybe? They all look so tiny compared to Greece.
   2989. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 06:48 PM (#4731060)
Japan has looked measurably worse since Greece went down a man. What on earth are they doing?
2990. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 19, 2014 at 07:04 PM (#4731076)
If that's on target, I think it goes in.
   2991. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 07:10 PM (#4731079)
Japan's main strategy seems to be to hope that Greece will foul them.
   2992. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 07:16 PM (#4731084)
I can't believe I'm saying this but...at this point I sort of am pulling for Greece. Japan are truly awful.
   2993. zack Posted: June 19, 2014 at 07:28 PM (#4731096)
Pros should take muay thai so they can put those shinballs on net.
   2994. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 07:30 PM (#4731097)
Japan has started to play something that vaguely resembles soccer since Kagawa came on. They're still terrible though. I can't believe I picked them to finish second in the group. They'd be lucky to finish second in a group of two.
   2995. zack Posted: June 19, 2014 at 07:35 PM (#4731099)
It would help if they didn't go down for free kicks every time they are confronted, since their free kicks have been terrible.
   2996. madvillain Posted: June 19, 2014 at 07:39 PM (#4731100)

   2998. Baldrick Posted: June 19, 2014 at 07:44 PM (#4731102)
Japan has definitely been better for the last 20 minutes. Still a pretty dire game though.
2999. Yoenis Cespedes, Baseball Savant Posted: June 19, 2014 at 07:47 PM (#4731103)
Japan just look bereft of ideas—well, other than whipping in crosses when your average player is 5'10".

I really hope Côte d'Ivoire take care of Greece and neither of these teams go through
