She's too busy drinking wine and ####### her brother.

No spoilers!

Which Italian player is going to lose his #### first?
   3103. Baldrick Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:24 PM (#4731583)
Sure seems like Immobile would help here, no? If they had someone who would be better at getting behind the high line they would have much better opportunities and/or would push the back line back and clear out more space in the midfield.
   3104. AuntBea Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:25 PM (#4731584)
Through 60 minutes, the game today has had more offsides calls (11) than any other complete game in the WC so far.

Edit: make that 12. Italy has been offsides 9 times already.
3105. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:26 PM (#4731585)
So based on the last year or so, Costa Rica is the best CONCACAF team, right?
   3106. Baldrick Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:27 PM (#4731587)
It's like Italy is unfamiliar with the offside rule
3107. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:29 PM (#4731590)
Cerci and Insigne now. CR fullbacks better get a quick drink of water and catch their breath.
   3108. AuntBea Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:29 PM (#4731591)
What was the yellow for? A foul, or dissent over being called offside?
3109. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:30 PM (#4731592)
Il Grande Torino shout out! Forza Torino! (but not in this game)
   3110. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:31 PM (#4731595)
What was the yellow for? A foul, or dissent over being called offside?

He dragged down a defender, and the assistant saw it.
3111. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:33 PM (#4731599)
Bolanos is having a great, great game.
   3112. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:36 PM (#4731604)
I wonder why Italy are playing with wingers when they don't use them.
   3113. Baldrick Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:38 PM (#4731606)
Oh where are the Pippos of yesteryear?
3114. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:39 PM (#4731608)
Costa Rica just seem a touch weary now. Can they keep this up for another 15 minutes?
3115. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:40 PM (#4731609)
This might be more stunning than the Uruguay game. At least in that game you could think "Uruguay didn't take CR seriously." There is no excuse for Italy not being 100% ready to roll here.
   3116. jmurph Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:45 PM (#4731619)
Well the alternative is that Costa Rica are pretty good, and neither Uruguay nor Italy are among the very best teams.
3117. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:47 PM (#4731624)
Well the alternative is that Costa Rica are pretty good

Oh I don't think that's an alternative at this point, I think that's fact. I'm saying (somewhat ham-fistedly) that any doubt about Costa Rica's legitimacy goes out the door with this one. At this point even if they somehow give up two late goals I don't think that changes how they deserve to be perceived.
3118. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:51 PM (#4731631)
Holy crap, ref.
   3119. SteveF Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:53 PM (#4731633)
Knockout round is officially CONCACAFfeinated.
   3120. The Marksist Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:54 PM (#4731635)
PURA VIDA!
3121. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:54 PM (#4731636)
Wow. Well done Ticos. Pura Vida!
3122. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:54 PM (#4731637)
So how often has one team beaten two former winners in the same group stage?
   3123. jmurph Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:54 PM (#4731638)
Great results for any kind of neutral in this group, since Uruguay-Italy now really matters, and since England are now officially eliminated (presumably even neutrals are rooting against England, rightfully so).
3124. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:55 PM (#4731640)
Uruguay v Italy is going to be an epic now.
   3125. AuntBea Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:55 PM (#4731641)
Congratulations to CR. Very well played. Italy had almost no good chances in the second half especially. Now CR are strong favorites to top the group, and it sets up a tasty match between Italy and Uruguay probably for second place (with Italy only needing a draw to advance from the group).
   3126. jmurph Posted: June 20, 2014 at 01:58 PM (#4731643)
Uruguay v Italy is going to be an epic now.

Well, since Italy don't need to win, maybe not. Could be an epic 10 men behind the ball kind of game. Either way, should be fun.
3127. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:01 PM (#4731645)
Could be an epic 10 men behind the ball kind of game.

Suarez running at a bunkered defense for 90 minutes could be a lot of fun.
   3128. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:03 PM (#4731647)
The Cassano substitution did not work at all.
   3129. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:05 PM (#4731648)
Suarez running at a bunkered defense for 90 minutes could be a lot of fun.

Possibly their best gameplan is to instruct Balotelli to take out Suarez at kickoff and then defend against Suarez-less Uruguay with 10 men.
   3130. DA Baracus Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:07 PM (#4731650)
This might be more stunning than the Uruguay game. At least in that game you could think "Uruguay didn't take CR seriously."

Plus they didn't have Suarez. But today, yeah, no excuses.
   3131. Random Transaction Generator Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:07 PM (#4731651)
So if Costa Rica had beaten Italy 3-1, and Italy and Uruguay tied in the final game, it would have come down to drawing lots to determine the second qualifying team?
   3132. Infinite Joost (Voxter) Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:10 PM (#4731653)
Italy will now play its most stultifying, insulting, should-be-#######-banned kind of game against Uruguay. God I hate Italy. I hope they lose by a thousand.
3133. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:11 PM (#4731656)

SANTOS, Brazil -- Mexico coach Miguel Herrera has defended World Cup fans chanting a gay slur which is under investigation by the sport's international governing body.

Herrera says Mexico fans shouting the slur as the rival team's goalkeeper takes a goal kick is "not that bad."

He says "We're with our fans. It's something they do to pressure the opposing goalkeeper."

Seriously?
   3134. ursus arctos Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:13 PM (#4731659)
Absolutely shocking from Italy, particularly in the second half, where they really looked like they just wanted to get into a cooler environment.

Full credit to the Ticos, who have completely outplayed both of their opponents and should really win the group.
   3135. AuntBea Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:14 PM (#4731660)
So if Costa Rica had beaten Italy 3-1, and Italy and Uruguay tied in the final game, it would have come down to drawing lots to determine the second qualifying team?

Yes. That is because there would have been absolute symmetry in scoreline between the two teams. The only way to break a tie like that is to use some other criteria besides scoreline (like fair play).
   3136. Howling John Shade Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:17 PM (#4731662)

Seriously?
I'm sure we're all glad to know that FIFA's investigation is "ongoing".
3137. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:19 PM (#4731664)
I'm sure we're all glad to know that FIFA's investigation is "ongoing".

I guess there have been no FIFA reps at, say, any of the last 50 Mexico games.
   3138. Baldrick Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:21 PM (#4731665)
That fellow who thought Spain were abysmal...I can only imagine what he thinks of Italy after this game.

Not to take anything away from Costa Rica, who did very well, but they gambled that Italy wouldn't be able to unlock the high line and were spectacularly rewarded.
   3139. Textbook Editor Posted: June 20, 2014 at 02:29 PM (#4731670)

Italy will now play its most stultifying, insulting, should-be-#######-banned kind of game against Uruguay. God I hate Italy. I hope they lose by a thousand.

Eh, I like watching Pirlo play. And Balotelli's a whole lot of fun.
   3140. Mefisto Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:10 PM (#4731691)
Michael Cox has his analysis of the England game up. He notes that Uruguay recognized Gerrard and Rooney as England's only 2 creative players and deliberately set his team to mark them out of the game.
   3141. Textbook Editor Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:15 PM (#4731696)
If Costa Rica can top the group, they'd play Ivory Coast/Japan/Greece... You'd have to say that's a game they could possibly win.
   3142. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:16 PM (#4731699)
Woah, something happened!
   3143. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:17 PM (#4731701)
...and just like that, this game seems over.
   3144. AuntBea Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:17 PM (#4731702)
Love Giroud's header. Don't love his new haircut.
   3145. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:17 PM (#4731703)
And again!
   3146. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:18 PM (#4731704)
Seems like a lot of goalies have been beaten at their near post this tournament. Actually, seems like a lot of weak goalkeeping in general this tournament.
   3147. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:18 PM (#4731706)
So what's the shortest interval between two goals in a WC?
   3148. The Marksist Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:19 PM (#4731708)
holy ####. I turned away for 4 minutes and it's 2-0?

Anyone painting this current Italian side with the broad catenaccio brush clearly hasn't watched much of them under Prandelli.
   3151. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:29 PM (#4731720)
Nice swiss attack.
   3152. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:30 PM (#4731721)
Great save from Lloris. Switzerland should have gotten one back there.
3153. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:30 PM (#4731722)
Djourou gets to mark Giroud!
   3154. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:30 PM (#4731723)
This has been way better since the goals.
3155. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:31 PM (#4731724)
Was that a double save?
   3156. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:31 PM (#4731726)
Stuuuuupid!
   3157. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:31 PM (#4731727)
That is just so stupid from Djourou. Benzema had nowhere to go.
   3158. The Marksist Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:32 PM (#4731729)
Harsh.
   3159. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:32 PM (#4731730)
Alright!
   3160. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:33 PM (#4731731)
I have no idea how the French player on the rebound off the penalty save (missed who it was) didn't manage to score.
   3161. The Marksist Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:34 PM (#4731732)
Excitement! I'm happy about that.
   3162. ursus arctos Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:34 PM (#4731734)
Cabaye
3163. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:34 PM (#4731735)
Was that Valbuena?
   3164. jmurph Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:36 PM (#4731738)
If Cabaye gets literally any other part of his body on that ball it goes in.
   3165. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:40 PM (#4731741)
Two against zero.

The Swiss seem to be able to get into box really easy.
   3168. AuntBea Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:41 PM (#4731747)
There is so much space for the French offense this game could see many more goals.
   3169. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:42 PM (#4731750)
Jeez, how many might France score in this game?
   3170. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:44 PM (#4731752)
Good France is a contender for the title.
   3171. simon bedford Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:45 PM (#4731754)
the guy thought spain sucked ( that would be me ) still thinks they sucked based on them being thoroughly outplayed in 2 games and failing abysmally in the second when they were in must win mode , they simply had no offense , the soccerroos gave a better account for themselves against the dutch than spain did, seriously you would have a hard time placing spain in the top 15 teams in the world the way they played, italy at least won a game...that being said the italians think nothing about uncorking a boring game every now and then
3172. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:45 PM (#4731755)
holy ####. I turned away for 4 minutes and it's 2-0?

I was watching the first 15 minutes with a co-worker. We both agreed that given that a draw probably suited both teams and the way it started that 0-0 would be the result. I walked away and was interupted by another colleague. Suddenly my co-worker said "hey, it's 2-0" and I thought he was kidding. Unreal.

France really have this good world cup/bad world cup thing down pat.
   3173. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:46 PM (#4731757)
An injury and 3 goals and somehow it's only 2 minutes of added time.
   3174. DA Baracus Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:48 PM (#4731761)
Preaching to the choir here, but FIFA rankings: Switzerland 6, France 17.
   3175. Baldrick Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:50 PM (#4731765)
France, goals in the entire 2010 World Cup: 1
France, goals in about 75 seconds today: 2
   3176. AuntBea Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:51 PM (#4731767)
seriously you would have a hard time placing spain in the top 15 teams in the world the way they played,

Upping the ante from the top 10 you claimed earlier. I assume this is hyperbole, because if Spain is not in the top 15, then they must be worse than Italy, Uruguay, England, Belgium, Bosnia, Croatia, and Ivory Coast.

I think the absolute worst you could rank Spain today is 9th or 10th, and that would be a huge stretch.
   3177. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:51 PM (#4731768)
Switzerland 6, France 17.

Sounds like a plausible result in today's match.
   3178. DA Baracus Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:52 PM (#4731770)
Good France is a contender for the title.

Remember when people (not here) were giving them crap for leaving Nasri home?
3179. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:54 PM (#4731773)
Basically Nasri, his girlfriend and people in England, I'd imagine.
   3180. simon bedford Posted: June 20, 2014 at 03:57 PM (#4731779)
so blown out by holland and blanked by chile would have you believe they are still a top 10 team with this lineup? interesting, but i dont think i will subscribe to your newsletter thanks
3181. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:00 PM (#4731783)
If all the top-level soccer you have ever watched in your life is this World Cup, then, yes, Spain is not a top 10 team.
   3182. DA Baracus Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:03 PM (#4731787)
so blown out by holland and blanked by chile

You just named two really good teams with world class players.
   3183. Textbook Editor Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:05 PM (#4731789)
Who would be the top 10 other than Spain?
   3184. Textbook Editor Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:08 PM (#4731792)
Or the top 15? (If you want to exclude Spain from that too.)

I mean, on form right now you might be able to convince me there are 10 teams better than Spain, but if we're talking a 1-game-only, winner-take-all situation, I'm not sure there's 10-15 teams out there that would beat Spain under those circumstances.

(Note: I would consider Chile and Holland to both be top-10/top-15 teams.)
   3185. simon bedford Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:09 PM (#4731794)
i am english so i probably watched in my life as much football as anyone here, not that i think we need to compare cvs about it, one truism is fifa rankings are terrible ,and spains number 1 ranking was based on events at least 2years old, they played two good teams , chile is not an elite squad no matter how you want to slice it, they were destroyed by one, their second half performance was embarrasing to say the least, and were flat and ineffective in the second, they clearly are not in the top 10 as far as current world class teams go if you dont see ten squads who look far better are playing better football and look like teams that can win, you are the one who watches very little of the sport
   3186. DA Baracus Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:11 PM (#4731797)
one truism is fifa rankings are terrible

No one has cited FIFA rankings here other than to mock them.

textbook i am wondering what part of spains two games suggested to you that they could beat any quality squad at the moment? they dont look like they could handle germany france, brazil argintina, uruquay columbia costa rica, italy (and they dont ook great either) plus chile and holland they already proved they couldnt compete against,,,thats ten, do you need more? right now do you think its a foregone conclusion they will win against australia?
   3189. Swedish Chef Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:13 PM (#4731804)
The Football Federation of North Korea has announced that it's surprised by the results of Spain, "the best team in Europe".
   3190. jmurph Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:17 PM (#4731807)
Remember when people (not here) were giving them crap for leaving Nasri home?

When Ribery went down I pointed out that it looked like a mistake, at the time, to have left Nasri out. I agree that through 1.6 games they haven't missed him (or Ribery, to be honest), but there are a lot of games left to be played.
   3191. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:22 PM (#4731812)
And again Switzerland should score but don't.
3192. I am going to be Frank Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:22 PM (#4731813)
If Nasri was willing to play nice then it would be beneficial if he was on the team, but I wonder what his reaction would be if Deschamps started Nasri that first game, and then sat him down this game (like he did with Griezmann).
   3193. AuntBea Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:25 PM (#4731815)
argintina, uruquay columbia costa rica, italy

Spelling aside, I would pick Spain to beat any of these teams except maybe Argentina. The Spain I saw in this tournament was certainly better than the Uruguay and the Italy I saw.
   3194. AuntBea Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:28 PM (#4731817)
I like the idea that Spain is not as good a team as Costa Rica. Oh what I would give to live in that world.
   3195. simon bedford Posted: June 20, 2014 at 04:29 PM (#4731818)
you saw a spain that i missed somehow, they were in neither match they played and look lifeless and listless from the second half of the first game onward and again i ask, do you think a victory against the socceroos is in the cards? clearly you must if you think they could handle italy, the thought of luis suarez vs that spanish defense is beyond hilarity, he could score 3 goals in the first half, never mind a full 90,,,,again dont know what spanish games you were watching, would loved to have seen them.
