Yet another what team to support

Sigh. I came out England.
   502. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: June 12, 2014 at 11:11 AM (#4723940)
yeah, things move pretty quick once they get past the group stage. I hope we're at least alive in the group after Portugal, then there's two whole weeks where I can dream big dreams.

As for haterade...

1. Mexico. #### off, Mexico, Even ignoring our third place finish in the original World Cup you've never made it any further than us. Take your laser pointers and piss bags and thank your lucky stars we even let you into the Cup.
2. Italy. 2006, never forget. ####### match fixing, diving, Gattuso-adoring bastards. Though I do love Mario Balotelli.
3. France. Nothing makes me more happy than the octennial collapse of the French team into infighting and insanity. Also, Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema are child #######.
4. England. I like their players, except for devil's buttplug Wayne Rooney, but holy #### are their fans and media insufferable.
5. Greece. When your style of play can be moderately well described by saying "New Zealand, but better" you deserve to burn in Hades.
6. Russia. What, you forgot what happened the last time we had a cold war? Bring it on, Ivan. I'm hoping like crazy for a USA/Russia matchup in the knockout round, even though we'd probably lose.

I'd actually be happy for their fans and the players if England or Mexico win, my main irritation is how far up their own ######## their fans would get. I also can't bring myself to hate Ghana, despite the history. We'll see if that changes if they knock us out again on goal differential or something.

I happen to be Spain. Not quite sure how that happened.

Fabregas to Chelsea now official

Didn't I see that Barca signed Rakitic the other day?

Quadrennial?
   505. DA Baracus Posted: June 12, 2014 at 11:26 AM (#4723955)
I don't hate Mexico. I enjoy having a strong rival. It would be nice if US home games weren't filled with Mexican fans, but that's our problem, not theirs.

I enjoy watching England lose a close game in the knockout stage and the media and fans go on suicide watch.

#### Ghana though.
   506. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: June 12, 2014 at 11:27 AM (#4723957)
I am Portugal.

I just want the US to beat Ghana. If we do that there will be plenty to root for in the last two group games. If we lose to Ghana then in all likelihood there is no hope and it's going to be pretty depressing.

I am also hoping that whatever the results guys like Green, Wondo and Davis somehow manage to justify the exclusion of Donovan. It's kind of my default rooting emotion. Even when I don't like a decision I prefer it works out because I find the endless coaching criticisms fairly boring.

Sign me up for this line of thinking.

Along that same line of thinking (one #### can ruin my opinion of the team) ... looking forward to seeing how I feel about England as the tourney progresses. Now that I don't have a rational reason to dislike them (John Terry), I might find myself somewhat supporting them. Or I still might root for the early exit and take great pleasure in reading the headlines from the tabloids.
   508. ursus arctos Posted: June 12, 2014 at 12:12 PM (#4724006)
Mefisto, Rakitic to Barcelona has yet to be confirmed officially, but everyone expects it to happen, and those expectations are only higher after today's announcement.

Fabregas fee rumored to be 30 million pounds.
   509. Topher Posted: June 12, 2014 at 12:14 PM (#4724007)
Really? The Nanny won't let me say ####? At least the Nanny lets us post about our twatball success/failure.

Sign me up for this line of thinking.
I like having a strong rival in CONCACAF, I'd just rather it be Costa Rica instead of Mexico.

Fabregas fee rumored to be 30 million pounds.

That seems quite reasonable (with the new tv revenues) for a player that is home-grown. He is home-grown, correct? I'm going to fully admit I don't always get that right but Fabregas surely must qualify.

It is hilarious that he was at one point the only player guaranteed a trip to Brazil.

Rather cool interactive from Berliner Morgenpost (in English) that allows you to compare all 736 players by a variety of criteria.

I came out Spain. Seems about right.
   515. Dan Lee is some pumkins Posted: June 12, 2014 at 12:21 PM (#4724017)
I got Spain as well.

I don't have anything against Spain, I appreciate and admire the way they play, but they're maybe fourth on the list of my favorite UEFA sides in this year's tournament. (Germany, Netherlands, Bosnia.)

Some of the questions and answers are crap.

Blegh, I'm England. I must do this over. Ugh, I'm Germany.
   517. Randy Jones Posted: June 12, 2014 at 12:39 PM (#4724036)
I got Portugal.
   518. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: June 12, 2014 at 12:52 PM (#4724048)
Well, it's haterade, it's not real hate. I think it would be neat for Mexico to win the World Cup, especially given how they barely made the thing in the first place. I don't hate any of the teams, and if I had to rank them based upon actual dislike I'd probably have to put Greece first for their negative approach to the game.

And I appreciate the US/Mexico rivalry. Dos a cero means a lot more when it's against a top quality opponent.
   519. DA Baracus Posted: June 12, 2014 at 01:20 PM (#4724065)
Well, it's haterade, it's not real hate.

Yeah but even then it's hard for me to hate them. They were better than us until recently, and now the results are about right.

Were I not an American I could probably buy some haterade on the US because of all the imported players. So screw Spain, you needed to get a Brazilian? Really?
   520. Swedish Chef Posted: June 12, 2014 at 01:29 PM (#4724074)
Napoli has sent Reina back to Liverpool, citing his high salary.

Yikes - I got Portugal.

Brazil
Croatia
Spain
Netherlands
Colombia
Japan
Uruguay
England
France
Switzerland
Argentina
Bosnia
Germany
Portugal
Belgium
South Korea

Spain-Brazil final (I don't feel like going through the post group matchups) if that's possible.

Spain-Brazil final (I don't feel like going through the post group matchups) if that's possible.

That can happen if both are #1 (or #2) in their groups. If they are 1-2 they will meet in the first elimination game.

Generally, the #1 and #2 in the groups go to opposite sides of the ladder.

Channeling Sergio Ramos, Barcelona drop Cesc under the bus.

The midfielder is leaving FC Barcelona after scoring 42 goals in 151 matches. There has been a downward trend in his stats every season at the club.
   525. Dale Sams Posted: June 12, 2014 at 02:21 PM (#4724149)
The graphics on this new Katamari Damacy game are amazing.
   526. frannyzoo Posted: June 12, 2014 at 02:38 PM (#4724165)
From the Ursus link:

But despite glowing starts to each campaign, Cesc’s contributions to the cause gradually decreased as each season drew to a close. From being someone who joined in with the attack, supplying and scoring goals, the magic tended to fade later on in each season. He only scored one, six and one goals in the last 24 games of each season. For some reason, he was never as good in the second half of a season as in the first.

Stabby, Barca, very stabby. Almost Red Soxian in its stabbiness. Oh well, Dude, let's go bowlin'.

Winner: Brazil
Biggest Disappointment: Argentina
Biggest Surprise: Chile (based on majority picking Spain/Netherlands in its Group)
Which trendy pick goes further, BH or Belgium?: Belgium
England or Italy? Italy

Enjoy, all...

Conspiracy theorists will be interested to know that the Catalan and Spanish versions of the Cesc piece don't contain the snarky second sentence of the sub-head that I quoted and tone the stabbiness that frannyzoo quoted down a bit as well.
   529. Fancy Pants Handles lap changes with class Posted: June 12, 2014 at 03:03 PM (#4724198)
Yeah, they don't take the best refs, they take the best refs from around the world. Which sounds the same but isn't. In 2010 they took one ref from England and two from New Zealand. That's how you get Koman Coulibaly.

And the one they took from England was Howard Webb!
   530. Fancy Pants Handles lap changes with class Posted: June 12, 2014 at 03:05 PM (#4724201)
Fabregas to Chelsea now official

Cause really, what Chelsea need is another attacking mid.
   531. frannyzoo Posted: June 12, 2014 at 03:11 PM (#4724211)
And Barca so desperately need a center-back like...Rakitic.

Meanwhile, I see Corluka in the starting 11 for Croatia, and that can't be good. Modric and all other hands on deck will have to spend major time helping out that guy.
   532. Textbook Editor Posted: June 12, 2014 at 03:12 PM (#4724214)
I went with a defender-heavy 6-1-3 formation for Twatball, in the hopes I own-goal my way to victory. Messi is the unexpected choice; I just need him to vomit a couple of times in the group stage games and I think it'll be worth his selection:

Joe Hart (keeper)

DaMarcus Beasley (defender)
Vedran ?orluka (defender)
David Luiz (defender)
Laurent Koscielny (defender)
Pepe (defender)
Pablo Zabaleta (defender)

Nigel de Jong (midfielder)

Lionel Messi (forward)
Wayne Rooney (forward)
Luis Suárez (forward)

So presumably everyone in Brazil just crapped themselves watching Neymar limp around during warm ups.
   534. Topher Posted: June 12, 2014 at 03:48 PM (#4724268)
Fiddling around with the link in ursus arctos' 513 ...

Pretty shocked at how many Americans aren't worth 1M €.

83 players (11.2%) were not born in the country they are representing. Take Algeria and their 16 non-native born players out of the pool and the number drops to 9.2%. The US has the next highest number with 6 but shares the runner-up spot with Croatia and Switzerland. The only teams that don't have at least one foreign born player are Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, Honduras, Russia, and South Korea.

Manchester United has 14 players on a roster. Napoli has more players (12) than any other team in the Premiership.

Of the 10 players that have 0 caps to their name, Bailey Wright is the only outfield player. I'm sure he'll be as cool as a cucumber, however, given his top level experience playing for Preston North End.

The US has over 30% of the World Cup players that play for Hertha BSC.

Maybe Brazil will turn on the all-out attack now.

Not pretty but deserved. Croatia have been better and really should have scored earlier on the header by Olic.
   550. Swedish Chef Posted: June 12, 2014 at 04:16 PM (#4724305)
That cross was great, the box players less so.

That and I'm watching via WatchESPN.

I'll find out when I spend all of tomorrow afternoon watching at a bar.

Haha, Neymar yellow card. That was worse than the ESPN guy says.
   564. Swedish Chef Posted: June 12, 2014 at 04:30 PM (#4724332)
Neymar scores!
   565. Howling John Shade Posted: June 12, 2014 at 04:30 PM (#4724334)
Neymar definitely took a look at Modric before the elbow, but he didn't swing at him. Yellow seems fair.

Edit: and that looked like a really lucky shot for Neymar.
   566. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: June 12, 2014 at 04:31 PM (#4724335)

I was surprised by how flat Brazil looked at the start. I thought they'd probably have the opposite problem. I have to think this game has more goals since both sides look dangerous going forward. 50 million for Luiz, huh?

I'd really like to see another Croatia goal first. I feel certain Brazil will score again, the only question to me is whether it's more than one.
   583. Swedish Chef Posted: June 12, 2014 at 05:13 PM (#4724399)
I'd like to see Oscar's toiling get rewarded.
   584. Swedish Chef Posted: June 12, 2014 at 05:15 PM (#4724400)
Neymar is a pretty shitty midfielder, he can't give away the ball like that there.

Perisic kind of looks like Dzeko's younger brother.

The Swedish national team would never throw in a rookie in a big game like that. That's why they are never going to win anything.

That ref aren't going to get any more games. That was a horrendous decision.

Seriously, such ####### bullshit. That ref should be murdered. It's an awful call, a youth coach wouldn't botch things that badly. No wonder Brazil were playing so lackadaisically, they ####### bought the game before it started.
