Set up for Mexican heartbreak.
   702. Swedish Chef Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:18 PM (#4724934)
Huge offside there.
   703. Kurt Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:19 PM (#4724938)
this should be a goal kick, no?
   704. AuntBea Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:19 PM (#4724939)
So lazy by the striker there. Inexcusable.
   705. ursus arctos Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:20 PM (#4724940)
So, it's not home team bias, it's team in yellow bias.

Lots of federations on the phone to their kit supplier at the moment.
   706. Baldrick Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:21 PM (#4724941)
I can't tell if Mexico look really good and are picking out extraordinarily clever passes, or if Cameroon just looks terrible. Not impressed with Mexico's defending on these corners though.
   707. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:22 PM (#4724944)
Eto'o should have scored.
   708. tshipman Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:22 PM (#4724945)
Mexico is playing very well. Some ridiculous offsides calls, but for the first 15 minutes, the game seems to being played on the final third for Mexico.

GDS seems to be a star for Mexico, but completely ordinary in club play. Odd.

Mexico seems likely to win, but with how poorly they play set pieces, they'll probably lose late.
   709. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:23 PM (#4724947)
or if Cameroon just looks terrible.

I think it's mostly this...and then Benny almost creates a goal!
   710. Howling John Shade Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:23 PM (#4724948)
I wonder if FIFA will ever step in with the "Puto!" nonsense. I like the idea of the whole stadium screaming at the goalie when he kicks it, but they really should pick a different word.
   711. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:24 PM (#4724949)
I forgot to add LOL!
   712. Swedish Chef Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:24 PM (#4724950)
or if Cameroon just looks terrible

Cameroon's pressure on the player in possession is incredibly toothless.

   713. Baldrick Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:24 PM (#4724951)
Cameroon has been in the attacking third about five times the entire match. But they have almost scored on several of those occasions.
   714. Swedish Chef Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:25 PM (#4724953)
Mexico not looking solid at the back in that scrum.
   715. Richard Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:26 PM (#4724954)
This is a fun game.
   716. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:26 PM (#4724956)
Mexico really struggles with Cameroon's size on those corners.

Bad ref decisions are all square now.
   717. Swedish Chef Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:28 PM (#4724957)
Great defending by Marquez!
   718. Baldrick Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:29 PM (#4724959)
LOL Marquez.
   719. Dan Lee is some pumkins Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:29 PM (#4724960)
Gosh, I'm really disappointed to see Rafa Marquez screw something up. He's such a likable chap.
   720. Baldrick Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:30 PM (#4724961)
What on earth was Cameroon doing? Did they just deputize Marquez to do their defending for them? How did two guys get so utterly open right in front of the goal?
   721. DA Baracus Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:30 PM (#4724963)
That's a 9 out of 10 on the Rafa Marquez schadenfreude scale.
   722. Swedish Chef Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:30 PM (#4724964)
The refs have bet the under.
   723. DA Baracus Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:32 PM (#4724966)
So I said I don't hate Mexico, and I stand by that, but boy this is fun.
   724. Howling John Shade Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:32 PM (#4724967)
I thought that came off a Cameroon player's head...
   725. Richard Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:32 PM (#4724968)
What on earth was wrong with that goal?
   726. Mefisto Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:32 PM (#4724971)
Ditto 724.
   727. Kurt Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:32 PM (#4724972)
Watching on univision - what was the call on that last non-goal?
   728. AuntBea Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:32 PM (#4724973)
What was the call?
   729. President of the David Eckstein Fan Club Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:33 PM (#4724974)
The ESPN announcers think it was offsides, but I also thought it was off a Cameroonian player.

EDIT: They just saw a replay and commented that it looked to be off a Cameroonian and sounded puzzled given that. Mexico got screwed again.
   730. AuntBea Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:33 PM (#4724976)
Maybe they thought there was a header by a Mexican player before the ball reached the goal scorer, thus offside?
   731. Baldrick Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:33 PM (#4724977)
What on earth is going on? Am I crazy? That was clearly a good goal.
   732. Dale Sams Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:33 PM (#4724978)
I agree 724
   733. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:35 PM (#4724980)
This is terrible refereeing but it would give me some kind of pleasure if Mexico lose in the most unfair way possible.
   734. AuntBea Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:36 PM (#4724981)
I'm actually starting to feel bad for Mexico. 2 relatively difficult calls to make, but no good reason to make the presumption of offside in either case.
   735. Dan Lee is some pumkins Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:36 PM (#4724983)
This is terrible refereeing but it would give me some kind of pleasure if Mexico lose in the most unfair way possible.
Yes. A trillion times yes.

If this tournament is going to go full WWE, I'd at least like to watch Rafa's head explode like that dude in Scanners.
   736. Kurt Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:38 PM (#4724985)
I'm with Aunt Bea - now rooting for Mexico to win this game and then get taken apart by Croatia and Brazil.
   737. tshipman Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:39 PM (#4724986)
I hope the poor officiating in this game will at least shut up the conspiracy nuts.
   738. Textbook Editor Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:41 PM (#4724989)
Man this is a hell of a rainstorm.
   739. Swedish Chef Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:42 PM (#4724991)
Cameroon trying a seven man back line. Still pretty porous.
   740. Dan Lee is some pumkins Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:46 PM (#4724996)
I think yesterday's game probably (almost certainly) wasn't fixed, but I also think that:

a) FIFA is spectacularly corrupt,
b) World Cup finals games have been and will continue to be fixed by gamblers, and
c) When FIFA chooses to ignore legitimate evidence of corruption, it makes crazy conspiracy theorists sound more reasonable.

If they'd take proactive, open, transparent steps to combat actual corruption, they wouldn't have to deal with people claiming nonexistent corruption.
   741. Howling John Shade Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:46 PM (#4724997)
Man, I like Mexico (other than Rafa Marquez). They're nasty and combative some of the time, but they usually play entertaining soccer and I like the fact that most of their players come from Liga MX. #### them when they're playing the US of course.

Edit: Also, that would have been a cheap penalty, but he didn't get any of the ball.
   742. Baldrick Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:47 PM (#4724999)
Kind of looked like a penalty to me. No?
   743. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:48 PM (#4725000)
This game is hilarious. At least the offside was correct that time.
   744. Baldrick Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:50 PM (#4725003)
So Mexico should be up by two goals at least. Maybe more.

This game is really stupid sometimes.
   745. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:52 PM (#4725006)
So...what is this about FIFA telling the USA to get cooking on 2022?
   746. Howling John Shade Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:52 PM (#4725007)
To be fair to the referees here, both of the offsides calls were pretty difficult. It just looks especially bad because they both went the same way and both turned out to be wrong.
   747. Howling John Shade Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:54 PM (#4725011)
So...what is this about FIFA telling the USA to get cooking on 2022?
They just want to solicit a new round of bribes before deciding that Kazakhstan is clearly the most qualified host.
   748. zack Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:57 PM (#4725015)
So the corner kick offside immunity expires as soon as an opposing player touches the ball? That seems unmanageable to me.
   749. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 12:59 PM (#4725017)
So the corner kick offside immunity

I didn't think there was an immunity on corners, just throw ins. I am confuse.
   750. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:00 PM (#4725018)
Supposedly Everton and Newcastle want to sign John Brooks. Heh, go figure.
   751. Kurt Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:01 PM (#4725020)
There's not immunity; but generally there's at least one defender on the goal line so it rarely is an issue.
   752. Dan Lee is some pumkins Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:02 PM (#4725021)
Well, you can't be offside if you're behind the ball when it's played. If you're in front of a corner kick, you're doing it wrong.
   753. Dan Lee is some pumkins Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:03 PM (#4725025)
Franz Beckenbauer suspended from "football activities" for 90 days for not cooperating with corruption investigators.

I'm sure that will be very difficult for him, not being allowed to do things he doesn't do anyway.
   754. Kurt Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:05 PM (#4725027)
752 - Right. Duh.
   755. Baldrick Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:12 PM (#4725032)
Doesn't seem like Peralta had much of an angle for that shot. I guess you've got to try there, but it looked pretty closed down.
   756. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:17 PM (#4725038)
Franz Beckenbauer suspended from "football activities" for 90 days for not cooperating with corruption investigators.

There's some circumstantial evidence that Der Kaiser was on the take from the Qataris. Shaking my head, as the kids say.
   757. AuntBea Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:18 PM (#4725040)
Well, you can't be offside if you're behind the ball when it's played. If you're in front of a corner kick, you're doing it wrong.

Pedantically speaking, you can be ahead of the ball if you are standing right on the endline, and the ball is played from the furthest point of the corner arc from the endline. Still not possible to be offside of course, though I am not sure which rule that comes under.
   758. Kurt Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:18 PM (#4725041)
a yellow card for *that*? Christ.
   759. starving to death with a full STEAGLES Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:18 PM (#4725042)
c) When FIFA chooses to ignore legitimate evidence of corruption, it makes crazy conspiracy theorists sound more reasonable.
who cares about conspiracy theorists? the problem with ignoring legitimate evidence of corruption is that it encourages future corruption.
This game is really stupid sometimes.
that's what i've been saying.
   760. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:18 PM (#4725043)
When step overs go wrong...
   761. Dale Sams Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:19 PM (#4725044)
Was yesterday's game fixed? Nahhh....now the South Korea-Italy game a while back?
   762. Dan Lee is some pumkins Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:20 PM (#4725045)
There's some circumstantial evidence that Der Kaiser was on the take from the Qataris.
Huh. Beckenbauer certainly doesn't seem like someone who'd take piles of money from a footballing hinterland trying to make a name for itself.
   763. AuntBea Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:21 PM (#4725046)
hahaha. spray right over the shoe.
   764. Swedish Chef Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:21 PM (#4725047)
GoOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
   765. zack Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:22 PM (#4725048)
That was awful from Guardado on a 4-3. Why the hell did he keep dribbling so long?
   766. Richard Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:22 PM (#4725049)
At last.
   767. Howling John Shade Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:23 PM (#4725050)
Well, that was deserved.
   768. President of the David Eckstein Fan Club Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:23 PM (#4725051)
Finally. Awful defending by Cameroon there.
   769. Howling John Shade Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:23 PM (#4725052)
Hahaha. Herrera's celebration was top notch.
   770. The Marksist Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:24 PM (#4725054)
Mexico's coach looks distinctly like a frog.
   771. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:25 PM (#4725056)
Cameroon isn't making a strong argument for CAF to get more WC spots.
   772. Swedish Chef Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:28 PM (#4725058)
hooray, the goal-line tech confirmed the goal!
   773. zack Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:35 PM (#4725062)
So if Cameroon is really as bad as they look, those lost goals could be real trouble for Mexico, no?
   774. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:41 PM (#4725067)
Gulati is denying the tweets about FIFA contacting USSF about the 2022 Cup by the way.
   775. AuntBea Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:42 PM (#4725068)
So if Cameroon is really as bad as they look, those lost goals could be real trouble for Mexico, no?

Sure. On the other hand, I wouldn't pick Brazil to beat Mexico by 2 at this point. By 1 is more likely.
   776. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:44 PM (#4725072)

Sure. On the other hand, I wouldn't pick Brazil to beat Mexico by 2 at this point. By 1 is more likely.

The correct joke is Brazil will beat Mexico by exactly as many goals as they need to whether they score them or not.
   777. Dale Sams Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:49 PM (#4725078)
You gotta take that yourself
   778. Swedish Chef Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:51 PM (#4725084)
oh hell, good save, kinda important to be alert there.
   779. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:52 PM (#4725085)
Here comes the time wasting.
   780. Swedish Chef Posted: June 13, 2014 at 01:55 PM (#4725092)
The right team won!
   781. ursus arctos Posted: June 13, 2014 at 02:01 PM (#4725094)
Evidently, FIFA has mandated that the "goal line technology" report feature in the 2nd replay of EVERY SINGLE GOAL.

I've decided the whole thing is a fiendish plot to undermine support for technology by making us all sick of its application in banal situations.
   782. zack Posted: June 13, 2014 at 02:06 PM (#4725101)
Is it a thing that "European" sports like constructed replays (tennis, cricket, this goal line thing) while NA sports just use the actual footage? Wonder why that is.
   783. Dale Sams Posted: June 13, 2014 at 02:07 PM (#4725102)
Anyone here ever played with or against capped players? Just wondering.
   784. Dan Lee is some pumkins Posted: June 13, 2014 at 02:15 PM (#4725107)
I once played in a pickup game against an eventual MLS goalkeeper.

He was, unsurprisingly, fantastic.
   785. tshipman Posted: June 13, 2014 at 02:22 PM (#4725116)
So you would have to think that Mexico is now the favorite to grab the second spot in that group.

Because of a 1-0 win against that team? Disagree; I think Croatia will bury Cameroon and only need to tie Mexico to advance.

Having 3 points from the first game is a huge structural advantage.
   788. tshipman Posted: June 13, 2014 at 02:34 PM (#4725133)
Interesting. ESPN is saying Costa will start up front for Spain vs Netherlands.
   789. Howling John Shade Posted: June 13, 2014 at 02:38 PM (#4725141)

Having 3 points from the first game is a huge structural advantage.
Is that as true with the way this group's schedule works? Croatia and Mexico play in the last game, so they'll both know exactly what they need to do to advance (assuming Brazil is on top of the group and Cameroon is out).
   790. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: June 13, 2014 at 02:47 PM (#4725157)
Is that as true with the way this group's schedule works?
The problem is that a Croatia win over Cameroon is far from guaranteed -- I'd put odds of three points at 50% ish tops. Croatia's back line and keeper are huge liabilities against Eto'o, Choupo-Moting and MBia. And a Mexico loss to Brazil is highly likely, but nothing in football is ever a certainty.

IF Croatia beat Cameroon and Mexico lose to Brazil, then it's back to about even, or however you rate the two sides. But that hasn't happened.
   791. Baldrick Posted: June 13, 2014 at 02:51 PM (#4725162)
The pre-match tactical analysis with Van Nistelrooy and Martinez was nice. Unfortunately, the visual displays were not very intuitive. But I thought they did a good job of characterizing the actual issues and tactics - not just speaking cliche.
   792. DA Baracus Posted: June 13, 2014 at 02:53 PM (#4725166)

It's pretty massive.

Going back to World Cup 1998, when the tournament expanded to 32 teams and just two teams per group were able to advance, only nine percent of teams that lost their first World Cup game (4 of 46) advanced to the knockout stage. Meanwhile, a tie in the first game was hardly a killer—56 percent of those teams (20 of 36) advanced from their group.

The best thing to do, of course, is to win your first game. From ’98 on, a whopping 87 percent of teams that have gotten three points from game one (40 of 46) have advanced to the Round of 16.

Is that as true with the way this group's schedule works?

There's always exceptions... and that's the fun of it.

Seconded.
   796. tshipman Posted: June 13, 2014 at 03:04 PM (#4725187)
I also liked that Van Nistelrooy didn't shy away from the fact that he was recently on the team.

It seemed like pretty good analysis, but I always wonder if I am simply less familiar with soccer cliches.
   797. Baldrick Posted: June 13, 2014 at 03:05 PM (#4725188)
Weird. The crowd doesn't seem to like Costa very much. Makes you wonder if there's some history there...

That's pretty much the template for what Holland's attack should look like.
