They award the best player before the final. That's why Ronaldo won it in 1998 (in retrospect it should have Zidane), and why he didn't win it in 2002.

Really? Well, I guess nobody cares who wins the final anyway. They are all out there just to have a good time.

James was the third favorite behind Messi and Müller before the weekend's matches.

Neuer can't get it, I don't think they even consider keepers, but he wasn't on the list in any case. There's an special award for keepers.

   9104. Swedish Chef Posted: July 13, 2014 at 06:13 PM (#4749779)
Messi won it. See if he cares.
   9105. Howie Menckel Posted: July 13, 2014 at 06:14 PM (#4749780)

Even in a lot of the U.S. championship sports, they tend to make you vote in the press box for the winner with 3 innings, or one quarter, or one period left. It's pretty silly, really.

In sadder news, Fred has retired from international play. Will we ever see his like again?
Will any Brazilian parents ever name their child Fred again?
   9107. AuntBea Posted: July 13, 2014 at 06:16 PM (#4749782)
Messi is clearly the best player in the world, but he won this one on reputation. I'm not saying he didn't play the best (he might have, it's unclear). I'm saying that he won it because someone had to win it, and he is the best player in the world. And his team reached the final.
   9108. puck Posted: July 13, 2014 at 06:18 PM (#4749783)
Fred: Silver boot winner of the Confederations Cup, and none of the goals were even scored on Tahiti!
   9109. Mefisto Posted: July 13, 2014 at 06:19 PM (#4749784)
Messi pretty much won the 3 pool play games for Argentina, plus the game against Switzerland. Without him, it's not clear that Argentina would have scored at all. That makes him a reasonable choice, though I would have gone with Mascherano. The problem with Germany is that they're all so good it's hard to choose one.
   9110. Swedish Chef Posted: July 13, 2014 at 06:19 PM (#4749785)
I wouldn't say "clearly" nowadays. Two years ago, yes, not now.
   9111. puck Posted: July 13, 2014 at 06:22 PM (#4749786)
Why does ESPN always give scores where one side doesn't score as "X - nil"? Do they not know the words "zero" and "nothing"?
   9112. Swedish Chef Posted: July 13, 2014 at 06:27 PM (#4749788)
The player that impressed me most was James. I'm sure that other players had more value but it is in the nature of these awards to overwhelmingly prefer offensive skills.

Because they use British writers?

In the last few games it seemed Messi faded as the game wore on.

Agree with 9114 that he's faded recently, but I think you're discounting his tactical impact on the opposing side.

Not discounting it. I just think it's not at all clear he performed the best at this world cup. He might have, it's just far from clear. I think that's a pretty uncontroversial statement. Others have already suggested Mascherano and James.

That's not a controversial statement (James was probably the most exciting, and a defensive-oriented player like Mascherano would be quite appropriate given how the tournament played out post-group stage); but you followed up with "he won this one on reputation" (+ reaching the final). If you meant "because his reputation caused teams to focus their entire game plan on shutting him down", fair enough; but the phrasing didn't seem to address the circumstances under which he put up his performance, that's all.
   9118. AuntBea Posted: July 13, 2014 at 07:35 PM (#4749801)
No, I mean he was one of a few players that COULD have won, but the reason he actually DID win was because of his reputation, not because he outplayed everyone else in this particular tournament.
   9119. Spivey Posted: July 13, 2014 at 07:35 PM (#4749802)
Has anyone ever won the golden boot without even making the semis? Somehow I doubt it. James was great, though, no doubt.

I think Messi was an ok vote getter. He really did get very little help, and he was being defended in a way that made it very, very difficult to do anything magical.

Neuer was the most valuable German player, probably. Well, really whoever is on the field in place of Mertesacker was the most valuable player for Germany.
   9120. Richard Posted: July 13, 2014 at 07:59 PM (#4749806)
2 players to have won the golden boot without being in the semis are Gary Lineker in 1986 (last 8) and Oleg Salenko in 1994 (didn't get out of the group but scored 5 in 1 game)
9121. Commissioner Bud Black Beltre Hillman Posted: July 13, 2014 at 08:05 PM (#4749807)
[9118]Then you are discounting recognition of his impact on the opposition, and moreover that his (in-the-conversation worthy) performance came in spite of tougher circumstances than the other players in the conversation faced game-in, game-out. I don't think they were just voting on reputation.

MCoA -- Not sure if you'll see this, but if so, do you plan on updating the MLS stats page sometime soon, or has that taken a back-seat, given the WaPo stuff and other miscellany?

Then you are discounting recognition of his impact on the opposition, and moreover that his (in-the-conversation worthy) performance came in spite of tougher circumstances than the other players in the conversation faced game-in, game-out.
Basically, you are saying he won because he clearly deserved it more than anyone else. We'll have to agree to disagree.
   9124. puck Posted: July 13, 2014 at 09:40 PM (#4749817)

I meant the anchors with American accents that do Sports Center.
   9125. Howling John Shade Posted: July 13, 2014 at 09:40 PM (#4749818)
If you were going to give it to someone on Germany, who would it be? I would be okay with Neuer, Schweinsteiger or Muller I suppose.
   9126. Mefisto Posted: July 13, 2014 at 09:43 PM (#4749819)
Basically, you are saying he won because he clearly deserved it more than anyone else.

As I read it, he's saying that Messi deserved it more because he forced the other teams to adjust their defenses to him. That's valuable (or would have been if Argentina had someone else who could put the ball in the net). He's also saying that because other teams did adjust their defenses to account for him personally, it was harder for Messi to achieve even as much as he did.
   9127. AuntBea Posted: July 13, 2014 at 09:49 PM (#4749820)
All fine and good. But that just means he thinks Messi was clearly the most deserving. I still don't agree, and I don't think I'm alone.
   9128. ursus arctos Posted: July 13, 2014 at 10:17 PM (#4749827)
Neither Schweinsteiger nor Neurer were on the short list that voters had to pick from. The German nominees were Mueller, Lahm, Kroos and Hummels.
   9129. zack Posted: July 13, 2014 at 10:18 PM (#4749828)
Did Germany actually do anything special for Messi? Seems like they were mostly marking him with the CBs like normal except when he dropped real deep.
9130. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: July 13, 2014 at 10:31 PM (#4749833)
For me Neuer should have won and it's not close. No love for keepers I guess.
   9131. ursus arctos Posted: July 13, 2014 at 10:43 PM (#4749838)
Keepers suffer from having their own award, which Neurer won. No keepers were on the short list.

.

Schweinsteiger was marking him. But there were several times when Messi dropped deep (to the midfield line) and there were 3 German players on him as soon as he got the ball.
   9133. AuntBea Posted: July 13, 2014 at 10:45 PM (#4749840)
Someone upthread said that keepers were ineligible for the golden ball. This was untrue in the past, and the wiki page seems to indicate that this is untrue still today. Kahn won both the golden ball and golden glove in 2002.
   9134. Kurt Posted: July 13, 2014 at 11:43 PM (#4749849)
I still think the goal of the tournament was this one, but Gotze's was terrific.

Just being Messi had an impact on the game. But I wonder if it wasn't Messi but more to do with injuries no giving Argentina another threat that deserved closer defending.

That's just not what I posted. We both seem to agree that several players could have deservedly won; I'm contesting your assertion that he took it because of his reputation, as there were a number of factors involved in the final outcome (not all of which directly relate to Messi's performance). Besides his impact on the game, he also benefited from the tendency to favour attacking players for these types of awards, even though much of the tournament was dominated by great defense and goalkeeping; from Robben's diving brouhaha; from the Germans having a strong overall team that tends to diminish individual accomplishments; and, as you'd noted initially, from his team getting to the finals. Just saying it's because of reputation is an unnecessary and inaccurate simplification.

It was down for me pregame, then around halftime I checked again and there was a handful of posts.

If you were going to give it to someone on Germany I think it would be Kroos or Muller, if you have to exclude Neuer.

Man U gets 75M pounds/year from Adidias. For comparsion sakes, Arsenal just got 30M/season. United have already spent a fair share of money but I think they're prepared to spend Madrid levels of money this offseason - sponsors want them in Champions League.

Weird, I figured it was down for everyone.

The site was down for me during the game.
It was like the DNS servers suddenly didn't know it existed. It was an instant "the server doesn't exist" message when I tried to connect.

Van Persie's goal was the best looking goal of the entire tournament. The cross, the leap, the goalie (non)reaction, and the location.
I'm pretty sure that is the goal that is going to be remembered most from this tournament.
   9148. Randy Jones Posted: July 14, 2014 at 10:27 AM (#4749927)
That issue where some people can't access the site while others can (and for those who can't it appears to be a DNS error) has happened before. It happened to me and a few others about a year ago where we couldn't access the site at all for ~3 days while most people had no problems.

I'd put James's first vs Uruguay right up there with it; the over the shoulder glance, the chest, the turn, the volley... goosebumps, and sheer beauty. But no doubt, for a purely iconic moment, we'll be seeing the RVP header on highlight reels for years.

In the run up to the game the Comcast DNS servers I use couldn't resolve the name, and neither could 4.2.2.2 (a Level3 name server). I didn't think to try google's, but went to one of those "is it only down for me" sites and it said the site was down. In the 2nd half I checked again and found Comcast still couldn't resolve but Level3/Google could. Weird stuff.

In the best goal dept, I hope Dos Santos's goal isn't forgotten. I don't know if it is best and visually was not as spectacular as James's or Van Persie's, but it seemed pretty difficult to pull off. Messi's game winner vs Iran and Jermaine Jones's goals are honorable mentions.
   9152. Mefisto Posted: July 14, 2014 at 11:31 AM (#4749976)
Great as Van Persie's goal was, I'd vote for Cahill's as the best of the tournament. And let's not forget Julian Green's either.

Another patch for Aston Villa's quiltwork.

Holding midfielder sounds good, that's been a need from when Gareth Barry left. Then he just have to be a decent player too.
