Enjoy the game gents. It's on too late for me, sadly.

USA! USA! USA!

Seriously I'm kinda worried about that back 4.

I'm a pretty big US soccer fan, if such a thing exists, and I'm only dimly aware of the existence of this Matt Besler. I'm guessing much of the reason is that he was apparently involved in that Canada game that I've thankfully blocked from my memory.

Besler has been one of the better CBs in the MLS the last few years (2012 MLS Defender of the Year winner, Gonzalez won in 2011), which is good enough to be given a shot given the other options at CB aren't great. Bocanegra is old, Gooch has been struggling with injuries, Goodson I think is hurt today and is sort of slow to be playing against the fast players on Mexico, Cameron mostly plays RB at Stoke and Fabian Johnson, Chandler and Cherundolo are all unavailable that position, so it makes more sense to play him at RB for now, just not a lot of other options at CB.
   606. Mefisto Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:19 PM (#4397235)
That back 4 looks awfully weak.

U S A!
   608. The Kentucky Gentleman, Mark Edward Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:30 PM (#4397238)
I'm disappointed Tim Ream's career has stalled at Bolton; I'm not sure if he's injured but he doesn't even make the bench anymore.

I'd like to see John Anthony Brooks at CB during the Gold Cup. He plays for second division Hertha Berlin in Germany, but there's a good chance he'll be in the Bundesliga next season.
   609. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:34 PM (#4397239)
What ever happened to Brek Shea?
   610. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:39 PM (#4397241)
Shea just hasn't played well when he has gotten the chance.
   611. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:39 PM (#4397242)
Damnit. That was a dumb yellow.
   612. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:40 PM (#4397243)
Not sure how much ESPN has the crowd mics turned up but it isLOUD.
   613. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:44 PM (#4397245)
Don't see the ref wave off the linesman often, kind of get the sense already that well be fortunate not to give up a PK at some point.
   614. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:45 PM (#4397246)
Now I'm wondering what that would be penalty was.
   615. Langer Monk Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:47 PM (#4397250)
That Bradley push apparently.
   616. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:48 PM (#4397251)
Ok, yeah, that shouldn't have been a penalty but still.
   617. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:50 PM (#4397252)
I am loving the ESPN broadcast crew. So, so catty.
   618. The Kentucky Gentleman, Mark Edward Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:50 PM (#4397253)
What ever happened to Brek Shea?

I can't speak for his time at Stoke because I'd never voluntarily watch a Stoke game, but he's currently on the US' roster. There's probably not a huge difference between him & Gomez, especially in a game like this.
   619. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:51 PM (#4397254)
Michael Bradley looks very good in that bail out player role to help the back line.
   620. Darkness and the howling fantods Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:51 PM (#4397256)
Not sure how much ESPN has the crowd mics turned up but it isLOUD.

Azteca's the loudest place I've ever been for a game.
   621. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:53 PM (#4397257)
What does a USA player have to do for Taylor Twellman to be openly critical of him?
   622. Langer Monk Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:55 PM (#4397260)
They need to capitalize on these corners...
   623. Langer Monk Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:55 PM (#4397261)
...and not do that.
   624. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:56 PM (#4397262)
That was a #### delivery.
   625. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 10:58 PM (#4397263)
Can we not leave the player completely unmarked in the box on free kicks please!
   626. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:00 PM (#4397264)
I don't know how that didn't end up in the back of the net. Incredibly lucky.
   627. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:00 PM (#4397265)
We suck.
   628. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:00 PM (#4397266)
Ugh.
   629. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:01 PM (#4397267)
Can we please play with just a *modicum* of composure?
   630. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:01 PM (#4397268)
Beasley can't go 90 tonight. Whatever the issues he's getting beaten like a drum right now.
   631. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:01 PM (#4397270)
This looks like Spain vs. Faroe Islands.
   632. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:01 PM (#4397269)
Hey! Israel drew against Portugal, miracles are possible!
   633. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:08 PM (#4397273)
The last 10 minutes hasn't been quite so clownshoes.
   634. Langer Monk Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:10 PM (#4397274)
Much better, if only for a few seconds.
   635. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:12 PM (#4397276)
Hey! That cross could have been from an American!
   636. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:14 PM (#4397279)
Wow.
   637. Langer Monk Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:14 PM (#4397280)
Strong by Guzan.
   638. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:14 PM (#4397281)
Guzan was great there.
   639. Sean Forman Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:14 PM (#4397282)
Can we do something to get jozy the ball?
   640. Langer Monk Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:16 PM (#4397283)
Dempsey has to get there - that was a great pass by Edu.
   641. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:18 PM (#4397286)
Basically one point would be a tremendous result.
   642. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:19 PM (#4397289)
I'll take that.
   643. Langer Monk Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:20 PM (#4397290)
Well, they hung in there. Gomez was invisible though. The wingers need to play a lot better.
   644. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:22 PM (#4397294)
Basically one point would be a tremendous result.

Considering we've beaten El Tri all of once at the Azteca even when we've had our best team, one point would be amazing.
   645. The Kentucky Gentleman, Mark Edward Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:22 PM (#4397295)
That actually wasn't too bad of a half. Mexico's had most of the possession but they've not really challenged Guzan either.

Zusi's having a pretty solid game.
   646. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:25 PM (#4397296)
Other than that one clear cut chance by Chicharito that went begging, the US hasn't given up that much. No clue if they can hold it together after the restart.
   647. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:27 PM (#4397299)
Where is USA playing its home games against Panama and Honduras in June?
   648. Manny Coon Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:30 PM (#4397301)
Shea just hasn't played well when he has gotten the chance.

Shea has been struggling with injuries, he had a bone removed from his foot in November, he hasn't worked his way back in top form since the surgery.
   649. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:31 PM (#4397302)
Remember Monterrey vs. Real Salt Lake in CCL? That was exciting.
   650. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:35 PM (#4397304)
I really like this box. Dual homerism!
   651. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:39 PM (#4397309)
Couple of real nice plays by Beasley in the box to save Maurice Edu's bacon.
   652. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:40 PM (#4397310)
Yeah. Seriously.
   653. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:41 PM (#4397313)
Altidore is really good. It's a pity he doesn't have much of a role to play in this game.
   654. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:43 PM (#4397314)
####.
   655. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:45 PM (#4397316)
Why the #### are they subbing Altidore?

Of all the people they could sub...
   656. Textbook Editor Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:45 PM (#4397317)
Hmmm... Alrighty then...
   657. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:46 PM (#4397319)
This seems like an odd substitution.
   658. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:47 PM (#4397321)
I think Altidore has played well but limited chances. Beasley is going to have to come off at some point and one of Besler or Edu probably will too.
   659. The Kentucky Gentleman, Mark Edward Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:50 PM (#4397322)
Honestly I don't see the US striker (whoever it is) making a difference this game. Not sure why Jozy was subbed, maybe he looked gassed.
   660. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:51 PM (#4397323)
Right, I was thinking there were other subs to be made, and doing one at 55 minutes for Altidore is weird. He did not look pleased.
   661. Sean Forman Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:52 PM (#4397324)
Can we do something to get jozy the ball?

Damn ipad
   662. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:53 PM (#4397325)
Can we do something to get jozy the ball?

Yes, hand one to him on the sideline.

(yeah, that repost bug is annoying)
   663. Langer Monk Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:54 PM (#4397326)
Besler's been pretty solid.
   664. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:55 PM (#4397327)
What I've liked about Besler is he is one of the few players who has been consistently cool on the ball. He hasn't seemed to rush things even when he's been surrounded.
   665. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:58 PM (#4397330)
Sitting back to much right now. We've been on the back foot all night but we're not even making any kind of attack or keeping the ball for more than about 2 passes. Can't play 25 more minutes this way.
   666. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 26, 2013 at 11:59 PM (#4397332)
####### nancy ass clearing. Boot it into the back row!
   667. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:01 AM (#4397336)
Klinsmann has forgotten more than I'll ever know but this is another odd one to me. Seems to me the place to use the subs tonight would have been on the back four.
   668. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:02 AM (#4397337)
The US got crazy lucky there.
   669. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:03 AM (#4397338)
Beasley is getting killed out there.
   670. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:05 AM (#4397340)
How the hell is that not a penalty?
   671. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:06 AM (#4397342)
ohthankfuckinggod.
   672. The Kentucky Gentleman, Mark Edward Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:06 AM (#4397343)
Eek. That was close.
   673. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:06 AM (#4397344)
The first half one on Bradley was not a penalty but that one there was blatant.
   674. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:06 AM (#4397345)
that should have been a penalty.
   675. Textbook Editor Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:07 AM (#4397346)
It is interesting with Darke going back-and-forth with two homers all game... It's like he's a mediator.
   676. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:09 AM (#4397347)
That's why I've been raving about the commentators, it's much more interesting than the announcers just being straight homers or generally dispassionate.
   677. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:09 AM (#4397348)
Brek Shea mention!
   678. Textbook Editor Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:11 AM (#4397350)
Omar Bravo is an excellent name.
   679. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:12 AM (#4397354)
Herculez Bravo would be better.
   680. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:12 AM (#4397355)
Brek Shea sighting!
   681. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:12 AM (#4397356)
Brek Shea!
   682. Langer Monk Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:12 AM (#4397357)
Staying aggressive...ish.
   683. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:12 AM (#4397358)
I feel like I summoned him, like an esper.
   684. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:17 AM (#4397363)
Lucky again for the US that Chicharito overran that.
   685. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:23 AM (#4397367)
imma bloody my cuticles now.
   686. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:24 AM (#4397369)
WOO!
   687. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:24 AM (#4397370)
YES! Back four and Guzan did yeoman work.
   688. The Kentucky Gentleman, Mark Edward Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:25 AM (#4397371)
A well-deserved point!
   689. Langer Monk Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:26 AM (#4397372)
That was an impressive performance by Besler/Gonzalez.
   690. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:28 AM (#4397375)
Cut up the game ball 40/40/20 ... Besler/Gonzalez/Guzan.

Or maybe 35/35/20, with the remainder to the ref ...
   691. WillYoung Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:30 AM (#4397376)
That was one of the more terrifying final two minutes I can ever recall.
   692. Mefisto Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:30 AM (#4397377)
Really great job by the US. I thought Mexico looked pretty sluggish and unimaginative, but I think the defense gets some credit for that. And Edu should be spending the rest of the night giving thanks to someone for that non-call.
   693. Manny Coon Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:30 AM (#4397378)
That was an impressive performance by Besler/Gonzalez.

MLS!

Is Guzan better than Howard these days?
   694. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:30 AM (#4397379)
Besler was shockingly good, given his bonafides. If he's capable of that performance on the regular, that'll go a long way towards reducing the generational dropoff on the back line.
   695. madvillain Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:30 AM (#4397380)
Yea I dunno, Mexico should have had a penalty. US played well but I dunno about "a deserved point". The last 10 minutes were pretty brutal.
   696. Textbook Editor Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:31 AM (#4397381)
Huzzah!
   697. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:36 AM (#4397385)
I'm not sure the US wholly deserved a point, but then again, I'm wouldn't say the point was wholly undeserved, either ...
   698. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:39 AM (#4397387)
Mexico deserved 1 point and the US deserved 0 points, so this is the most appropriate result statistically.
   699. Manny Coon Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:40 AM (#4397389)
Besler was shockingly good, given his bonafides.

I think MLS is better than a lot of people give it credit for these days. Besler and Gonzalez were both great, Zusi and Johnson have contributed recently as well. Might be better to give more time to MLS stars than guys struggling at the lower ends of Europe, like Goodson or Parkhurst.
   700. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: March 27, 2013 at 12:41 AM (#4397390)
Hey, Parkhurst did great at the lower ends of Europe. He's struggling in the Bundesliga.
