How did Adnan Januszaj make the provisional squad but Nainggolan doesn't? Did Belgium get good fullbacks yet? Lukaku is better than Benteke at pretty much everything, right? Batshuayi gives them pace. Dries Mertens still had a decent season at Napoli (not as crazy as the previous season, but still 18 league goals). I also can't believe Belgium has a guy from MLS in their squad.

Is Spain going to be good this time? Squad always looks pretty good.

I was confused by Naingolan too but evidently he is the Belgian Jack Wilshere in terms of lifestyle choices. I could see how that might annoy a modern manager.

Nainggolan has always struck me as one of the fallen at the Dagor Bragollach. Cthulhu! Bah.

You wouldn't know it from Nainggolan's attempt to define Euro trash aesthetics for the next few generations, but evidently he does have feelings--he's retired of international soccer in response to being left off the team. Also...NERDS!

Everything I'm seeing on the intertubes is that Poch will soon sign an extension. He's even touring the new stadium and talking to the architects about things he wants. I think, more than money, Poch wants to consolidate power this summer.

So Emery in, Arteta not because Arteta wanted a say in transfers?

Does this mean Emery is comfortable not getting a say? Or they're more comfortable giving him a say because he's experienced?
2016. SPICEY WITH A SIDE OF BEER ON A BABYYYYYYY Posted: May 21, 2018 at 04:58 PM (#5676747)
I'm pretty shocked Nainggolan was left off. He seems to me exactly like the kind of player Belgium needs and doesn't really have on their squad. Someone with a high workrate who has a lot of nasty in midfield. How many freaking wingers do they need anyways? And 4 forwards?

Man, I think this is a bad decision.
   2017. J. Sosa Posted: May 21, 2018 at 07:43 PM (#5676851)
At one time Roma fans thought the plan was for Emery to come in eventually. He is used to working under that type of model. I like the hire better than I would have Arteta. I don’t think it is a home run by any means, he has gotten outfoxed a couple times in Europe but he is solid.

If I were an Arsenal fan I would be more worried about Msinlitat. Towards the end at Dortmund they started bringing guys like Sahin and Kagawa back rather than finding the next Sahin. I don’t know that those decisions can be attributed to him, but the fact that he immediately went to the well with Auba and Mkitaryan and might now be going for Sokratis is... Ominous.
   2018. Sean Forman Posted: May 22, 2018 at 08:10 AM (#5677110)
Did Belgium get good fullbacks yet?

I've sometimes wondered if Belgium should just play four Centre Halves in the back and just tell them to stay put or they could tuck inside in possession like Pep's FB experiments.

Then use, Hazard, Lukaku, DeBruyne, Mertens, Carrasco, Witsel/Fellaini in a 4-1-4-1 and get the width from the front five interchanging and playing very fluidly.

That's probably a recipe for getting destroyed in the midfield.
2019. Jose is an Absurd Force of Nature Posted: May 22, 2018 at 09:01 AM (#5677118)
So Champions League final...is it me or is this potentially a really compelling game? I have to think the Marcelo/Salah matchup is going to be the difference maker. I think the player that forces the other one to commit defensively decides the match for his team. I won't be surprised if this is 3-2 or 4-3.
2020. SPICEY WITH A SIDE OF BEER ON A BABYYYYYYY Posted: May 22, 2018 at 09:24 AM (#5677126)
Yeah, it's compelling. I think Liverpool have shown when they're at their best they can play with anyone. They've not been at their best since the City tie though - but with their front 3 I still think they can beat anyone, anywhere. I expect a lot of goal chances both ways.

I'll be interested to see who ends up having the ball more. I kind of expect it to be Liverpool, though in a match with these 2 teams I think they're at their best breaking without the ball, I think having the ball more in the middle 3rd may almost be a disadvantage.
   2021. strong silence Posted: May 22, 2018 at 10:36 AM (#5677176)
2019. Salah should defend Marcelo as far back as midway into his own half then counter attack. Sucker him into your own goal area then Kroos has to stay back. Then spring Salah with a clearing pass into space. Kroos can't stay with him.
   2022. J. Sosa Posted: May 22, 2018 at 11:07 AM (#5677200)
Klopp more or less forces the other manager to play chicken. Klopp talked about not being patient in the second leg against Roma which cost them some chances.

I will be honest, I feel good about this matchup. Against City I thought it would be a narrow loss and was nervous. Against Roma I thought Liverpool should win and was nervous. Against Real? I feel good. It could all go wrong sure, but if the front three is rested and ready and Lallana and Can are available on the bench, I feel like it will come down to finishing. Can’t be wasteful.

The primary concern that I have is that Zidane is not above pragmatism. Which is what Liverpool struggles against. The other thing is that I hope Bale starts. I don’t want him coming on as a sub in the second half. Oh, and the ref. Things ah... Tend to go Real’s way in the CL.

Bold prediction time:

If Casemiro starts Liverpool wins. If Kovavic starts Liverpool loses.
   2023. strong silence Posted: May 22, 2018 at 11:22 AM (#5677213)
Last sentence. Why?
   2024. J. Sosa Posted: May 22, 2018 at 11:54 AM (#5677248)
It would mean Real’s staff don’t take the threat of the press seriously when watching the tape. Before each match Klopp and his staff select triggers for the gegenpress based on certain situations and certain players. If Zidane selects Casemiro it means that Zidane thinks that brand of tactical fouling will be enough to stop the counter and it would mean he chose to ignore what Liverpool forced City to do with Ferandinho.

Casemiro is not a threat to the press and is a trigger. Kovavic can carry the ball and punish traps. To my eye when Casemiro plays Modric and Kroos also have a tendency to think that’s the job done on one side of the ball. Kovavic is mobile and is a threat to break. Modric can hurt the press badly (I am terrified of him maybe more than any other player). Kroos can hurt the trap. Casemiro? There’s my huckleberry.

Liverpool knows what Real are going to do. Real is going to go hard after TAA and try to create overloads. That’s what they do. A fit in his prime Robben (which is what Salah is, the Messi type season comps are silly) would have destroyed Real. It will be interesting to see if Real takes the bait like City did. They repeatedly tried to get overloads with Sane at the expense of playing through KDB. But I am afraid Zidane is going to do the smart thing. Start Kovavic and Asensio. Asensio scares me. Then bring on Bale and Benzema in the second half. If that happens, Liverpool is screwed.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Liverpool is nailed on to win. Just that some potential matchups give them a good shot. The final is gravy. It has changed the perception of the club so much. House money.
   2025. strong silence Posted: May 22, 2018 at 12:05 PM (#5677256)
So it sounds like you think passing from the back is the better way to beat liverpool's press. That sounds right to me, Fwiw.

Why isn't the final a two-game series?
   2026. J. Sosa Posted: May 22, 2018 at 12:18 PM (#5677267)
Otamendi and Fernandinho were the targets against City. Casemiro would be one if he plays. Liverpool is going to try to deny Modric the ball in buildup as much as possible. If he plays deeper that is going to be an issue for Liverpool. The teams that frustrate Liverpool bypass the press. City was stubborn and wouldn’t do it. Towards the end Pep made the adjustment and would in the Bundesliga but didn’t with City for some reason.

Zidane is more of a pragmatist.

A follow up on something referenced before:

It was just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday when reporters first spotted the group of masked men running in the road near Sporting CP's training ground at Alcochete, about 20 minutes outside Lisbon. "Let's go inside," one remembers hearing. There was fear in the voices around him, an immediate expectation of the nightmare to come.

The mob was 50 strong. Security guards were unable to prevent them from entering the training centre, where Sporting, Europe's 37th-ranked football club and one of Portugal's most storied, were preparing to train. Forcing its way into the locker room, the group launched a brutal attack on players and the coaching staff, beating them with belts, fists and sticks.

"Vamos-vos matar [sic]! Voces estao fodidos!" the assailants screamed, according to a Public Prosecution Service document based on the players' testimonials, revealed by Portuguese magazine Sabado. Or, "We're going to kill you! You are f--ked!"

Jebus.

Just nuts.

I saw that a lot of Real and Liverpool supporters with tickets have just given up on getting to Kiev for the game. I guess Kiev is more a Europa League city than a CL city at this point.

Unai Emery seems a very sensible appointment but if they are going to blow their cash on guys like Sokratis (who I'm pretty sure is cooked) then Emery has his work cut out for him.

Hey, but in good news!

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new five-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur worth up to £8.5m each year. The manager had refused in recent weeks to guarantee he would lead the club into their new stadium in September and he sparked alarm on the final day of the season when he appeared to suggest that his future was linked to how Daniel Levy approached the summer transfer window.

0-0 through 90 minutes in the women's champions league final. Wolfsburg then score (very very much against the run of play) to take a 1-0 lead. Alex Popp then gets sent off for a second yellow, and...the wheels completely fall off the wagon. Lyon score 4 goals to win 4-1 in a game that reminded me a lot of the 2014 men's final.

The biggest of big matches today, and I'm hoping it's not sunny at Wembley (makes for very tough viewing on ESPN+, for which I dipped into the 7-day "free trial"). Shrews tomorrow as well in the League One Final.

Oh, and there's evidently another match going on in Eastern Europe later today. Kinda like the "Barbara Walters" interview after the Oscars, that.

Go Fulham! I have nothing against Villa and they are a bigger club, but terry rubs me the wrong way. It would also be nice to have another American play defense in a top league. Also means it won’t be another Steve Bruce firing once Villa struggles at the beginning of the season. I’ve seen that way too many times.

I'm for Fulham too, on this day. Luckily for me they look significantly better than Villa right now. If promoted, I don't think there's any way they'd be one of the three most likely teams to go down (in preseason odds).

Cardiff and Huddersfield are currently significant favorites to be relegated next year, with Watford/Brighton next but significantly further behind.

I usually root against London clubs for promotion but I like Fulham. Whoever loses is going to be in serious financial trouble. They both bet heavy on promotion.

Marca is flip flopping on Real’s leaked lineup. Probably by design. We will see.

I don’t know if ream is any good at defending but he is pretty good with the ball. Khan is legit rich and Sessegnon can be sold for a fair amount of money. I don’t know enough about Villa’s owner other than he’s from Hong Kong.

Fulham down to 10. Let’s see if they have the steel and nerve (britishism cliche).

Get this crew some pom poms for Real Madrid. What a bunch of clowns. Ronaldo and Benzema both clearly offside and they are trying to imply it would have been a goal with VAR.
2069. I am going to be Frank Posted: May 26, 2018 at 03:39 PM (#5680037)
Ronaldo looked offside then Benzema looked offside too. Really close, but offside. Madrid’s midfield looked bad early, especially defensively but they looked a lot better after they settled down. It’s basically down to mane to create something because I don’t think anyone else on Liverpool can do it. Lallana in a previous incarnation might have but I don’t think now.

Edit: On a second look, Ronaldo looked onside.
   2070. J. Sosa Posted: May 26, 2018 at 03:40 PM (#5680038)
Silence, it doesn’t matter now. Liverpool can’t pin them deep without the threat of Salah. If you will notice Zidane knew Casemiro was a weakness, he had Varane and Ramos bringing it out with Kroos and Modric split. I had been pretty happy with how it was going. Klopp usually has them up the pressure around the time Salah got hurt.

Luck and effort now because they are at a severe disadvantage.
   2071. KronicFatigue Posted: May 26, 2018 at 03:41 PM (#5680039)
I've got an offside question that I'm having a mental lapse on. Offense is A B and C. C crosses to A who now has the ball with only the keeper to beat. B drifts in past all the defenders as well. A takes a shot that keeper blocks and B taps in for goal. What factors can make B offsides?

Does B need to be behind A when A shoots? Or is B off sides regardless as soon as the keeper blocks ball because the off side resets and there isn't a second defender?
2072. I am going to be Frank Posted: May 26, 2018 at 03:45 PM (#5680041)
I’m pretty sure “b” just needs to be behind “a” when “a” shoots.
   2073. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 03:47 PM (#5680042)
Question 1. No.
Question 2. There must be a pass, a forward pass,
   2074. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 03:48 PM (#5680043)
EDIT. I think my answers are wrong.
   2075. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 03:51 PM (#5680044)
A forward pass isn't required. I think a ball played forward is the key issue. And a shot is a forward-played ball. And B must be behind A is required. I'm sure of that.

RM now in control, and dangerous. . Still just one counterattack is needed for Liverpool. So I tell the backs to boot it forward and not play it out of the back.

Calamitous is the word that comes to mind.

What is karius complaining about
   2078. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 03:58 PM (#5680047)
This is why this needs to be a 2 game final. Remove the element of luck.
2079. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: May 26, 2018 at 03:59 PM (#5680048)
That is such a ####### bonkers play.

Why the #### doesn't Liverpool have a real keeper?
   2080. KronicFatigue Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:00 PM (#5680049)
#### this. And yes, home and home required. Woo hoo! Back on
   2081. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:00 PM (#5680050)
1-1!
2082. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:01 PM (#5680051)
I ####### love you, Sadio Mane, especially after that celebration.
   2083. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:04 PM (#5680052)
More energy now. Running. Tackles. Shouting.
   2084. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:08 PM (#5680053)
F!n! WOW. Not a true bicycle but still very, very good.
2085. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:09 PM (#5680054)
Gareth Bale with a ####### goal of the year nominee.
   2086. sardonic Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:10 PM (#5680056)
That was unbelievable, a goal worthy of winning a Champions League Final.
2087. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:12 PM (#5680057)
Not over yet. Come on you reds.
   2088. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:13 PM (#5680058)
It's nice to see CR respect a teammate's goal.
2089. I am going to be Frank Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:13 PM (#5680059)
Is it solanke time?
   2090. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:16 PM (#5680061)
Is Milner doing anything? Seems like he could be subbed for fresh legs.

Is it solanke time?

It's never Solanke time.
2092. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:17 PM (#5680063)
Firmino needs to do something. Van Djik did amazing on that 1v1 with Ronaldo.
   2093. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:18 PM (#5680064)
Hand ball NOT called
2094. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:19 PM (#5680066)
ANOTHER huge play where Real gets away with it. That was an intentional handball.
   2095. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:21 PM (#5680067)
Hand ball rule has become overly complex. It is the most fundamental and basic rule of soccer: hands and arms are not to be used. Very much elemental to the founders whenever this great sport was created.
   2096. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:28 PM (#5680068)
It's nice that Bale is the hero.
2097. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:29 PM (#5680069)
Well, that's the game. Karius should have 2 OG. Mingolet is laughing.
   2098. strong silence Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:29 PM (#5680070)
Bale. EPL fans would welcome him back right?
2099. Jose is an Absurd Force of Nature Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:29 PM (#5680071)
That was horrible.
   2100. J. Sosa Posted: May 26, 2018 at 04:31 PM (#5680072)
Alisson. Don’t care if it costs 100 million. He wants to come.
