OTP 2018 May 28: Don’t turn down WH invitation: Former Nats manager on Powerhouse Politics podcast

“Baseball is not about politics, it’s just about going out and enjoying the game,” Johnson says of his experience managing a team in the nation’s capital in comparison with managing teams elsewhere, such as the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Games at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., are often a “who’s who” of the political world, including Supreme Court justices, leading Democratic and Republican congressional leaders and high-profile media figures. Johnson says when they come to the game, they put aside politics.

“You don’t think about politics you just think about baseball,” Johnson says about the unifying nature of professional baseball in the nation’s capital.

What about suicide and other violence?

Note: I still think gun control is for now a lost cause and not worth the effort many liberals put into it, but I would like to hear the facts.

My understanding of the data is that it's suggestive that gun control measures can reduce suicides. It wouldn't be surprising - that result is found for like, suicide barriers on bridges and such. Apart from terminally ill people, suicide isn't usually a rational choice or anything, and while there are chronic suicide attempters, people who (successfully) commit suicide usually decide to do it very shortly beforehand (minutes~hours), so the circumstances matter a lot more.

I'm not sure what you mean by "other violence", but I find it hard to believe that guns would result in an increase in violence without an increase in killings. In general, murder is the best metric for understanding violence and crime because it has a high reporting rate with very few false reports, so the biases in reporting are typically unimportant.

It’s an embarrassment he’s president. It will be less of an embarrassment—and will do less damage to the country—if he’s denied renomination by the party that unfortunately nominated him in 2016.

Four more twittering Twitterers twote their tweeted twats:

Janet E Johnson:
I’m sure if Hillary Clinton promised to bail out a sanctioned, spying Chinese telecom, and then Chelsea immediately got a coveted trademark agreement from China, The New York Times would bury it on B3.
(*B3 is exactly where the failing NYT put the Trump/ZTE/Ivanka story)

Mike Morse:
Well, at least this clears up Roseanne's schedule so she can join Trump's legal team.

Bill O'Reilly:
The stunning fall of Roseanne has wide implications but the primary damage is to America. By attacking Valerie Jarrett in a gross personal way, Ms. Barr sent a signal to the nation’s 13 million African-Americans that white racism is indeed alive and well.
Mark Harris:
Yes, I'm sure that was news to them.
It will definitely be news to the approximately 45 million African-Americans in the U.S. that 32 million of them have vanished.
And if anybody knows anything about how to make 32 million disappear, it's Bill O'Reilly. Okay, I'm done.

Bill O'Reilly has been a true friend to the blacks ever since he ate a meal in Harlem and reported back, “I had a great time, and all the people up there are tremendously respectful. I couldn’t get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia’s restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it’s run by blacks, primarily black patronship. ...There wasn’t one person in Sylvia’s who was screaming, ‘M-Fer, I want more iced tea.’ You know, I mean, everybody was, it was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn’t any kind of craziness at all.”

Am I overstepping my bounds as a certified White Devil if I summarize her comment as, "Black people commit minor crimes. White people commit genocide"?

"Steal countries" is at least somewhat ambiguous... but that statement still isn't racist. It is, to some extent, an exaggeration - certainly Africans and Asians have numerous genocides to their credit. But it's also not an unreasonable statement (nor racist) statement to say that "Colonialism was bad and perpetrated mostly by Whites against those of darker hue".

It's certainly an inflammatory statement. But it's definitely much less bigoted that Barr's spewage re: Apes and somewhat less so than Trump's comments about Mexican (immigrants).

Racism isn't symmetric either, althoughI think you can say that Bigotry is. You must have power to exert over the discriminated to get to Racism.

So, about those posts here suggesting that the Democrats were making inroads in Texas, which would be big - Today's Quinnipiac Poll Gives Republican Incumbent Governor Greg Abbott a 19% Lead, 53% - 34%. They also have Ted Cruz leading 50% - 39%. And the Democrats lead in the RCP Generic Congressional Ballot Poll Average is down to 3.7%, as polls today gave the Dems leads of 1% & 3%.
   422. Gonfalon Bubble Posted: May 30, 2018 at 07:13 PM (#5682637)
How odd. Just as Democrats are forever drooling over Texas before forever being disappointed, I could have sworn that Yankee Clapper just posted a poll from ever-tantalizing New Jersey in which the Republican challenger had a whole 24% against a shamed pedophile crook... and as GOOD news!

And Yankee Clapper is always so cautious about getting out ahead of an election that has yet to be run... yet so thrilled by 0.3% worth of possible movement. Doesn't he remember that in May 2010, despite being the out-of-power party in a midterm, the Republicans were slightly trailing in the generic ballot by 0.4%? How did that election turn out for them?

In most cases, they all pretty much cancel each other out. That’s why Erlich ended up with a bell curve, with its peak around a net effect of zero. In my case, the score-lowering variants slightly outweighed the score-raising ones, leaving me—like Erlich—on the left side of the curve. And I do mean slightly. Each of those ticks on the horizontal axis of the bell curve represents five IQ points. Erlich predicted that the effect of my 52 genes added up to less than a point.

Samantha Bee Tears Into ‘Feckless Cunt’ Ivanka Trump:
That brought Bee to Ivanka Trump, who came under fire this past weekend for posting a loving picture of herself with her son amid the reports about the forced separation of families by her father’s regime.

“Ivanka Trump, who works at the White House, chose to post the second most oblivious tweet we’ve seen this week,” Bee said. “You know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices you feckless ####!”

Absolutely yes. There's no question about it.

But not for calling Ivanka Trump a "feckless cunt," though. For the entirety of Bee's witless career.

After the "Roseanne" cancellation, there's been a lot of frantic need among conservatives to find and claim a retaliatory scalp, any retaliatory scalp. And that enfeebled desperation is way funnier than anything on Bee's show.

So guess which side in DC looks after its interns?
Vera spent last year calling every lawmaker in the House and Senate and asking whether they paid their interns. His report, Experience Doesn’t Pay the Bills, found that more than half of Republican senators offered paid internships, compared to fewer than a third of Democratic senators. In the House it was even worse: Twice as many Republicans as Democrats paid their interns.

This year, Vera has been calling nonprofits and think tanks and asking them the same thing. So far he’s found the same pattern: The Heritage Foundation, the Cato Institute and Americans for Prosperity pay their interns. The Progressive Policy Institute, Let America Vote and the Human Rights Campaign don’t.
The left is so big on talk, small on doing.

Pathetic.

Exactly. Ivanka doesn’t seem to me to lack initiative or strength, and though she may be irresponsible, it’s not in a “can’t find her car keys” way, but a “let ‘em eat cake” way.

Those who think insulting Trump's family members is within the bounds of acceptable political discourse learned nothing from the 2016 election. The left's concern about civility in politics is indeed quite selective.

OED says: Lacking initiative or strength of character; irresponsible

Exactly. Ivanka doesn’t seem to me to lack initiative or strength, and though she may be irresponsible, it’s not in a “can’t find her car keys” way, but a “let ‘em eat cake” way.

So I would fire Bee for irresponsible semantics :)

IDK -

Feckless sort of gives her the limited benefit of the doubt... i.e., she (or rather Jarvanka) were supposed to be these young cosmopolitans... NIMBY modern liberals in the finest SBB sense - the sort who attend all the right charity balls, change their social media profiles to rainbow flags on certain events, shed tears about the poor and down-trodden so long as they trod downward in other neighborhoods, etc.

Have we forgotten already the glowing reports of the early days of Trump? When she was the brave voice trying to talk daddy out of the transgender ban or was fighting for working moms?

I think feckless fits if you give her the benefit of the doubt.

I'm very far from a lefty. Just because I seethe with contempt for the contemptible doesn't make me left, at all.

But the Trump family has waived all civility by their own behavior. They have earned the #### that's thrown their way. Ivanka in particular by pretending to care about family issues while feeding at the trough as gluttonoulsy as any of them.

Dershowitz provides something for the left (and David!)...

Dershowitz Is 'Halfway Persuaded' the FBI Acted Properly With Trump Campaign Informant

"Whenever you get any kind of an informer anywhere near a campaign, there has to be an assurance that it was not political or partisan in nature," Dershowitz said. "I'm about halfway persuaded now by Congressman Gowdy's statement."

He said he would like to hear the Justice Department inspector general's findings and he would like to see the facts for himself, but he's "on the way to being persuaded."

...and something for the right:

As for Gowdy's suggestion that Trump sit down with Special Counsel Robert Mueller if he truly has nothing to hide, Dershowitz strongly disagreed.

"Prosecutors aren't trying to help you. They're trying to set a perjury trap for you," he explained. "I don't see the answer being if you've done nothing wrong sit down with the prosecutor. That's not good advice for the client."

The bolded point is one I tried repeatedly to explain to TraderDave before I decided he was more interested in ad hominem than he was in serious discussion.

This is sound legal advice without a doubt. It's not at all clear that it's good political advice, and Trump's part of the case ultimately will be decided by a political body and not by Mueller. Gowdy is a former prosecutor, so I think he's well aware of Dershowitz's point.

Should Samantha Bee get fired?

Absolutely yes. There's no question about it.

But not for calling Ivanka Trump a "feckless cunt," though. For the entirety of Bee's witless career.

That's close to my sentiment, although "feckless cunt" would probably be enough for me, and I'm no fan of Ivanka. It just smacks too much of thug talk, regardless of who's saying it about whom, and it doesn't have any saving grace qualities. She could've blasted Ivanka in a million different ways for her cowardice and hypocrisy without descending into gutter language like that.

I dunno, she seemed not to have much trouble finding people defending her to retweet last night after she ended her afternoon-long departure from Twitter.

The point isn't whether the Trump family has "earned" that sort of abuse or not. The point is whether you need to mimic them in their crudity, and in this case using the gender equivalent of the n-word. It's really no different than if (say) Al Sharpton had called (say) Clarence Thomas a nigger. There's simply no defense for that sort of thing in a public forum.

Samantha Bee's zinger after woman abuser Eric Schneiderman resigned was (literally) "Fuck you, Eric Schneiderman." Her big punchline when Ivanka Trump's family photo show clashed with the ICE family breakups was (literally) "Come on, you feckless cunt." When Hope Hicks quit the White House, Samantha Bee quipped (literally) "Fuck you, Hope Hicks." As if that wasn't enough comedy, Bee added, "You helped burn down democracy, bitch." After Sean Hannity got exposed as Michael Cohen's mystery client, Samantha Bee Took. Him. Down.: "No one would fuck you." And it's hard to see Stephen Miller recovering from this broadside: "He is the exact same racist asshole he’s been since childhood." Bee certainly took no prisoners the night she called Ted Cruz AND Bernie Sanders "mansplaining pricks." Sarah Huckabee Sanders hasn't escaped the feared Bee skewer, either: "Sarah Huckabee Sanders is a fucking liar." In a TBS promo for her show, Samantha Bee promises to "shut down the shit, hold everyone accountable, and rock a fucking blazer."

Who knows where her sharp satiric tongue might strike next?

A belief in justice and the belief that what my forebears did to build the American Dream should be open to others UNDER THE SAME RULES THAT APPLIED TO MINE -- which were none for mine and almost every other white American's forebears - is lefty?

I said "liberal" because it best applies to current parlance on the subject, but a level playing field is generally not consdidered "lefty" in America (and let's remember your adjective was left not liberal). Indeed one of the left's greatest failings is a distrust of a level playing field with consistently applied rules.

But really, it's quite gratifying to know you listen closely enough to pull out old posts at the drop of a hat. Thank you for your support.

And in any case, even in the post you cite, which you're too dim to grasp, it still is not left of Andy, which was your original challenge point, no? Can you find anything I've posted left of Andy, which I remind you is YOUR standard?

Re: #485--

That's evidence that she's terrible, JE. It's not evidence why she should be fired from her job for calling Ivanka a cunt (she shouldn't be), or why her language crossed an uncrossable line (it didn't).

An online comment about Roseanne Barr from yesterday applies even more strongly to the not-in-trouble Samantha Bee: firing her because of the harsh language she directed at Ivanka Trump would be like cancelling a Willie Nelson concert because you discovered he's a pothead.

Sweet gig she’s got there. Very few purse designers get to bluster around international politics at the highest levels without a shred of qualification or competence. Better still, she can deftly pivot to being Daddy’s Little Girl and how dare you hippies say mean things about this poor innocent waif like she was Chelsea Clinton.

Since the topic JE quoted you on is immigration, it might be worth reminding everyone (once again) that by far the most "liberal" view on that subject is the one held by that notorious Leftist Nick Gillespie of Reason, the most prominent libertarian media source out there. AFAICT he's to the left of everyone here when it comes to border control and unlimited immigration.

Of course the idea that a fairly conventional Obama liberal like myself is some sort of a "leftist" only goes to show just how much phony narratives promoted by the right wing have taken hold in some quarters, where Obama is seen as some sort of a "leftist" while a xenophobic, conspiracy mongering madman like Trump is touted by JE as being in the "center".

Yes – this ship is so firmly under sail that it feels cranky even to yell at it as it passes, but … the right has done the rhetorical work of recalibration. In 2018, if you suggest that the United States ought to be slightly more like Canada 2018 in some ways, or indeed like the USA 1968 in some ways, rightists will immediately start barking about how you must want to turn America into either Venezuela 2018 or Communist China 1968.

These rightists, in some cases, are ignorant; in others, just disingenuous. But they're winning rhetorically because a lot of people really do, deplorably, support Trump, and see him as a voice of reason.

It's instructive. The analogy to Donald Trump, on the left, would be Al Sharpton. Rightists will shriek at the suggestion that any Democrat has even taken a pee in a urinal next to Al Sharpton. But they will happily elect the right-wing equivalent of Sharpton to the Presidency itself and then close ranks if anyone dares to point that out.

I think we all agree that Samantha Bee should be fired. Gonfalon has made an irrefutable case why. But remember that Ivanka's father was the guy who was delighted when somebody at one of his rallies called Ted Cruz a p#### because Cruz was soft on torture. That's the "center" nowadays, folks.

Oh wait! Omega Dancing Monkey has me on ignore, too! He cliams that he's only interested in honest debate! What a ####### liar he is!

Anyway, Sarah Huckabee Sanders showed some humanity yesterday. Did you see it?? A kid made her cry, at the daily press briefing. He asked her how can the administration make him not afraid to go to school out of fear of getting shot, and it all hit her. All of her bull #### denials of everything awful about Trump came down on her like an avalanche, and she had to fight back the tears of shame that have been welling up in her for months. So she is human. There is hope for her.

Actually, she'll probably regroup and double down, because she's entrenched on the dark side, and surely going to hell, if there is a hell.

Actually, what I said in #453 is that Bee committed a fireable offense. And in #464, I observed that, if an on-air personality had used the same words to describe Chelsea Clinton, she/he would have been out of a job before the next commercial break.

And I agree that it's a mystery why Bee was hired in the first place, since she's just not funny.
