OTP November 2012 - Moneypoll! The Pundits vs. The Election-Data Nerds

Come next Tuesday night, we’ll get a resolution (let’s hope) to a great ongoing battle of 2012: not just the Presidential election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, but the one between the pundits trying to analyze that race with their guts and a new breed of statistics gurus trying to forecast it with data.

In Election 2012 as seen by the pundits–political journalists on the trail, commentators in cable-news studios–the campaign is a jump ball. There’s a slight lead for Mitt Romney in national polls and slight leads for Barack Obama in swing-state polls, and no good way of predicting next Tuesday’s outcome beyond flipping a coin. ...

I thought pretty early on that things were looking really good for Obama. Early returns from Florida and Virgina suggested that he was extremely competitive in those states and might even have a slight advantage plus North Carolina was still up in the air for quite a while.
I thought the networks and news orgs did a terrible job of telling us what was the early vote, and what was today's vote. I'm also disgusted by msnbc's zippy graphics. They're worse than fox baseball. Absolutely ridiculous. Everything flips, glitters, the borders are constantly in motion... I want to hit someone.

Huh--Obama's share of the whitey vote dropped from 43 to 40%. His share of brown stayed constant, at 80. I would have though the latter would have ticked up a little. 40% isn't really all that far from Clinton's share of the white vote.

Also, does this mean we can stop making up bullshit about the BLS and the EPA and every other sane, necessary government agency?

Re: Obama's ground game - how well will that move to his successor? That is, if the excellent ground game is largely responsible for his win (I don't know if that is true but it is proposed here and elsewhere), is all the Rs have to do to win is either improve theirs or have an opponent without such a ground game?

We're unlikely to see a successor in the sense you're thinking. The presidential baton is not an anointment like some lock-down Congress district (tell us who to vote for Mr. Dellums). And there's not a candidate waiting in the wings who will capture the messianic fervor of Obama.

Every time I see Peggy Noonan on a pundit show she appears to be falling asleep from boredom and then suddenly she half wakes up to make a completely unoriginal point about something marginally on topic from five minutes ago that is completely obvious to everyone. She is completely irrelevant, at least Dick Morris is unintentionally hilarious.

Noonan's a speechwriter, that's how she made her name. Everything of hers comes out the same. Nothing wrong with being a one trick pony, but that's her.

I think most of the supporters of gay marriage are men who just afraid to sleep with other men, as they desire, without society's permission.

That's not an entirely inaccurate statement. The sexual act between two promiscuous heterosexuals is often marked by such lack of commitment and utter rejection of the procreative outcomes, it becomes a narcissistic act in which the only role the partner serves in providing an orifice. Once that partner adopts that perspective, there is little difference to be seen between partners or orifices other than the initial stimulation.

His speech seems a little aimless, a little rambling. Not really the soaring talk I would have liked to hear, the rallying cry for the next four years.

Marijuana legalisation in Oregon failed. didn't think they were more conservative than Wash that way. Bachmann inching to victory. Thanks, MN.

RCP vs. Nate on Florida:

RCP: 49.8-48.2 Romney
538: 49.8-49.8 Tie
current: 50.4-49.6 Obama

That's ... maybe .. a dime's difference? Not really seeing it. You can't really credit or debit EITHER of them for predicting a coin flip. I mean -- by definition it could have gone either way (on a state by state basis).

If I was Nate I would write an article tomorrow saying it's not that HE'S right, it's that the polls are accurate.

So weed now legal in Colorado according to state law, per the voters.

But no sirree, the country is not moving left!

Well, according to national law, it's still illegal.

Apparently every network covering the election has mentioned that (1) Obama won and (2) pot is now legal in a couple more states, but had NO COMMENT WHATSOEVER on the intersection of those two facts. The Obama DOJ has been ####### terrible on state-legal pot in CA.

The pro-SSM bloc is made up for four groups.
1. children of broken families who were denied knowledge of what a family should be (aka the ignorant by no fault of their own)
2. promiscuous heterosexuals seeking to harm their consciences by attacking every reminder of the ideal they've denied. (aka the ignorant by weakened will)
3. secularists and transhumanists who want reductionist definitions of humanity and human institutions that are necessary for their plans for humanity's redesign (aka the selfish)
4. power hungry bureaucrats who want new statutes to enforce against their opponents and competing voices for social instruction (families, churches). (aka the selfish)

Well, Dave is the non-bureaucrat heterosexual monogamous Jewish son of a two-parent household, so that's a 5th group right there.

EDIT: Then again, I wouldn't call myself pro-SSM as much as I am anti-discrimination and pro-freedom of religion. Both of which are violated, IMO, by SSM bans.

Eventually 1 and 2 will find healing and become wise. And 3 and 4 can't maintain power without showing their totalitarian hand and being rebuked by the public. It's not sustainable.

I was only half-paying attention to most of it, but I'll give him credit: President Obama ended well. My favorite result of the night is definitely my birth state legalizing gay marriage: yay, Maryland (and Maine and hopefully Washington and Minnesota). (#4674: ssm is "same-sex marriage")

####, I jinxed MN. Lead in the MN gay-marriage bill down to 2,613 with 75% reporting. (The NO vote means they DON'T change their constitution to ban same-sex marriage.) NO is ahead, but only barely.

Lassus - the lead is actually INCREASING lately. Real close.

Speaking of MN races - Jim Graves has taken a lead in his race against Bachmann.

No, but I'm holding out for Tina Turner as an orifii-of-my-dreams.

this speech is pretty good... i still like the "democracy begins with this, not ends..."

Hmmm, I reserve my mind to change my mind, but strangely, the FOX News online feed started "buffering, buffering, moving forward, not backwards; upwards, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!" somewhere around 5 minutes ago, so I missed the rousing finish.

Don't blame me, FOX, I voted for Kodos!

He did not do one of my life-long dreams. Either he missed it or he has gone beyond it (yeah, I know which one is probably true).

When you end a speech... ANY speech.. particularly a political speech, you point to the crowd and say...

"GOD BLESS YOU. AND GOD BLESS THE UNTIED STATES OF AMERICA!"

CHEERS FOR EVERYONE! AMERICAN FLAGS AND/OR ABORTIONS AS YOU WISH!

Good to hear. It was larger when I initially posted on it than now, but I'm glad it's at least trending in the right direction.

I will check again when I get up in five hours. Today, election, tomorrow, Mets.

Icing on the cake, this would be.

Since y'all liked it I'll have to listen to the close again. One commentator notes Obama's failing to thank Bill Clinton. It didn't register with me as an omission. Does it strike anyone else as jarring or ungrateful?

Kang: Abortions for all.
[crowd boos]
Kang: Very well, no abortions for anyone.
[crowd boos]
Kang: Hmm... Abortions for some, miniature American flags for others.
[crowd cheers and waves miniature flags]

New Hampshire now has women in the positions of Governor, both U.S. Senators, and both U.S. Representatives. Don't know if this is true, but a friend posted on Facebook that this is the first time this has happened in any state.

"The Obama DOJ has been ####### terrible on state-legal pot in CA."

My understanding of this is mostly that Obama doesn't care much about drug enforcement in comparison to other things and the bog-standard anti-drug warriors are in charge. I could be wrong.

Maybe, but it's not much comfort to the people whose lives have been ruined by this administration's actions.
Obama said he was going to leave states alone on this, and he didn't: the buck stops with him.

He didn't name many people by name. Not surprising, to me, that Bill was left out.

It was an okay speech. Nothing great but not terrible.

I also enjoyed it everyone. Good night.

Really? Peoples' lives are ruined if they don't get to aggressively distribute pot? Come on now.

It probably doesn't make you feel any better, but apparently the People's Republic of California has once again denied my petitions to increase my own taxes. Oh, and we are keeping our Death Penalty.

I am really, really, really hoping that the death penalty one gets flipped late. I care much more about that than anything else this election.

Edit:
Ray was pretty funny tonight.

It has been a #### storm in San Diego... I'll go see if our DA won. Also, we have an interesting mayoral and CA50 race going on here.

I've got Graves up on Bachmann by 187 votes of 250,000 cast. Unless it keeps breaking Graves it's going to be an ugly recount.

Florida--
Obama 4,062, 230
Romney 3,997,004
98.6% reporting

About 125,000 ballots left for Romney to make up about 65,000 votes.
