Outs Per Swing: Reid Brignac Called Up To Rays

I had a friend that decided one day to only talk only hardcore gibberish and brignac (right after braddiac-nern, of course) was a word he used quite often. He ended up missorting himself on a United Parcel Service carousel and I never heard from him again. Gleep-gleep, old friend, and a hearty hurgnebble welcome to Reid Brignac!

To replace Bartlett the Rays recalled a pair of short stops from Durham including one of their top prospects, Reid Brignac. I’m expecting and hoping that Brignac will take over the starting duties while Bartlett is out with Zobrist being here as a backup plan.  This will give the Rays a chance to see what a future left side of Brignac and Evan Longoria would look like at the Major League level. Brignac was hitting .265/.312/.431 with 7 HR and 38 RBI at Durham. His defense according to several scouting reports has improved tremendously in the past year to two years

It will also allow the Rays to showcase Brignac to other teams as he is one of the Rays most attractive trade pieces. Many wondered about the future of Brignac once the Rays acquired Bartlett and Brignac’s future became even more cloudy when the Rays drafted SS, Tim Beckham, with the 1st overall pick.  I have wondered if the Rays would move Brignac to RF, but we won’tl see him play anything but the middle IF in this call up.

Interesting choice. I don't think Brignac is ready yet. He still tends to rush plays in the field and his pitch recognition could stand to be tightened.

So is it true the Indians are asking for a young shortstop plus others in return for CC?

Rays to Neal Huntington: We're interested in Jason Bay.

Huntington: Sorry, not available. How about Nady?

Rays: He might be an option. Who do you want?

Huntington: Jake McGee would be a good start.

Rays: Sorry, he's not available. How about Brignac?

Huntington: Brignac is a nice piece. Do you like Sean Burnett and Steven Pearce? We'll give you two for one.

Rays: Sorry, no can do. Tell you what, you showcase Pearce this weekend and we'll bring up Brignac and then we'll revist this talk next week. Besides, I have five other clubs interested in him so think about sweetening your offer with sugar. * click *

Now the question must be asked: how do you pronounce "Brignac"?

Just like it's spelled, or is it "Brinyak"?

McGee needs TJ surgery; he's done for the year.

Thank you Mike. I did not know McGee went down.

RF? If you have a SS prospect you don't think can stick at SS but will hit well enough to play RF, you move him to 2B or 3B, not RF. And it's not like the Rays should be seeing Iwamura as a long-term solution. (nor Bartlett obviously)

Presumably someone will now point out the Rays' stud 2B prospect. In which case, you do indeed trade Brignac.

Brignac gets two mentions on teh site in two days? Odds on that?

I'm not sure if Brignac could play 2B. He has a long, lean body and might have trouble pivoting at second. That being said, I don't think he needs to move off short - though he was talked about as a 3b some when drafted. He is pretty athletic, has nice infield actions, good quickness and a nice arm.

And I can see why the idea of Brignac to RF would be floated, with his rangy build, good arm and solid speed he looks like a standout RFer. But with the D-Rays roster makeup, and his infield skills, I don't see him needing to play there at all
