Ozzie Guillen promises ‘I’ll be cocky’ as Sox try to recapture their missing magic

Ozzie goes #######, #######, ####### nuts!

‘‘I don’t give a [expletive] what people think about me,’’ Guillen said. ‘‘I win 200 games in two years, and nobody ever mentions that. Well, if you’re not going to give me credit when the team wins ... that made me think, ‘Wow, what kind of life are we living?’ My team wins 200 games, I didn’t have a losing season, and they treat me that way.

‘‘Then if you’re a nice guy, they are going to treat you the same way. [Expletive] it, be an ####### then. I would rather be an ####### winning than be a nice guy [expletive] losing. Give me an ####### who can win, don’t give me a nice guy who can [expletive] lose.’‘

In picking apart the 2007 White Sox, plenty of things went wrong. A popular knock among the critics is this team that had been known for thriving with a chip on its shoulder suddenly was too nice.

‘‘They’re right,’’ Guillen said. ‘‘You cover this ballclub last year, you say, ‘Wow, what a nice team to cover.’ No, it’s not fun to cover a team like that. Well, it’s not fun to [expletive] manage a team like that, either.

‘‘We stunk last year.’‘

...’‘If my [stuff] sells papers every day and we win, well, I want to be on the front page every day,’’ Guillen said. ‘‘As long as I don’t rape anybody, as long a I pay my taxes, I don’t beat my wife ... if I am going to be on the front page of the newspaper because of [expletive] baseball, I will take that.

‘‘If more people treat baseball the way I treat baseball, this [expletive] game will be better.’‘

Pretty high standards.

Ozzie Guillen is a horse's ass.

Why's he an #######? Ozzie's the ####### man, and a pretty decent manager to boot. The slightly-more-than-average amount of sacrafice bunts are a little bothersome, but he (generally) handles the pitching staff pretty well, the players like him -- has any former player called him out after leaving the organization? Maybe Damaso Marte? -- and he keeps things interesting. I really couldn't ask for anything more from a manager.

Good to know, everyone needs a kick in the ass from a guy like Ozzie every now and then. Hopefully his act doesn't wear thin on his players...

This will likely be Ozzie's last season in Chicago, probably Kenny Williams' last too, but I really hope somebody else hires hi before long. The baseball world is just a more fun place with Ozzie at the helm of the crazy train.

so does this mean we get more homophobic slurs this year?
   9. Billy B Posted: February 17, 2008 at 03:55 PM (#2692987)
Not to nitpick but he only won 189 games in 2 years.

He is probably counting the 11 post-season wins in 2005 too.

Magglio Ordoñez.

Magglio Ordoñez.

Did Ordonez call out Ozzie? I'm fairly certain Maggs' ire was directed at Kenny for the way he left the organization (knee injury, the hiring of Boras, extension talks etc) and then Ozzie -- most likely unneccesarily -- stuck his neck in and called out Magglio.

Anyways, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a quote or insuation from Ordonez saying he didn't like playing for Guillen (although I certainly could have missed it).

This will likely be Ozzie's last season in Chicago

Do you have any basis for saying that? Probably not?

They gave him a 5-year extension just a few months ago. He's not going anywhere. Neither is Kenny, unless he steps down. Never underestimate Reinsdorf's loyalty, especially to the guys who helped his dream of winning a World Series come true.

Yeah. The White Sox will win somewhere around 68 games.

EDIT: OK, I'm being a little harsh saying 68. Their Pythag last year was 67-95, though, and I'll be surprised if they clear 75 this year.

To me, I still think Kenny and Ozzie ran the greatest White Sox player in history out of town with that ridiculous "bad attitude" crap. They are idiots. And, Ozzie is sometimes good with the staff, sometimes he over-manages, i.e. having three different pitchers throw three consecutive pitches.

That's still no reason to say Ozzie is going to be gone after this year. As PH mentioned, Ozzie getting Reinsdorf a World Series title likely means Guillen has a job until 2012 (I'm pretty sure that's when JR said he's stepping down). The Sox could win five games next year and Ozzie would still be at the helm in 2009.

And I know you made the edit, but I'd bet you any amount of money the Sox finish with better than 68 wins. You'd have to be completely blind to think the Sox are four games worse (or only one game better, if you choose to go by Pythag) than last season. They're probably not better than either of the top two Central teams, but they're still vastly improved over last season's squad (77 wins according to PECOTA -- that's a ten-win improvement over last year's Pythag).

I wanna see if you wanna see what it means to be the man with the master plan. Are you the man now?

I don't know how vast the improvement is for the Sox this year. Defensively, this could be the worst team in the league. Sadly, the ousting of Uribe at short makes us worse, the likely event of Crede being moved in spring training leaves a huge hole at third based on what Fields has shown so far, and Dye is the worst right fielder in baseball. Then, although I love Swish, I'm not sure how well he will be able to man center; his defensive ratings in center were not good in the ~60 games he played (obviously, very small sample size). This, in combination with a highly fielding-dependent pitching staff, besides maybe Vazquez, does not bode well. Also, I'm expecting Linebrink to get torn up MacDougal-style (due to badly declining peripherals/switching to the worst HR park in the league), and besides the injury-prone Dotel I still don't have confidence in any of the pen guys besides Jenks. On top of all that, we would need at least 2 of Danks/Floyd/Egbert/Broadway?/whoever else to pan out to even have a decent shot at not being completely blown out of the Central. I should also mention that I think Contreras is complete garbage, and nearer to 50 than whatever he's listed at... 36? 37? I also think 68 wins is low, but, however, I could completely see the bottom dropping out, and would honestly be not too disappointed with PECOTA's 77.

The pitching is what really has me thinking that, while a win total around 75 is likely, the White Sox have real potential to totally crash and burn this year. If Thome misses half the season or more and all the non-Buehrle starters melt down, they could lose 100 games... and it's not a crazy scenario. I don't know what kind of odds I can get on "the White Sox will lead the major leagues in runs allowed by non-Colorado-or-Texas teams", but it's an attractive bet.

It works better if you don't win 120 games one year and 80 the next, though.
