Padres acquire shortstop Freddy Galvis from Phillies - The San Diego Union-Tribune

This looks like a deal to help the development of some of their young pitchers.

An apparent solution to the Padres’ greatest weakness is en route to San Diego. The club on Friday traded for shortstop Freddy Galvis, sending pitching prospect Enyel De Los Santos to the Philadelphia Phillies.

A collective shrug from Phils fans. An infield of Franco, Crawford, Kingery and Santana holds lots of promise. Onward and upward!

Galvis as super utility player is a nice piece, but they are not ready to contend this year so no great loss. I'm assuming they are trying to trade Cesar Hernandez.

You don't hear much about Freddy Galvis, but he was the Phillies' longest-serving player, appearing in 642 games for the Phillies since 2012.

He's already 32nd on the all-time Phillies strikeout leaderboard, right between Larry Bowa and Dode Paskert!

I hope he gets a major role with the Padres and doesn't disappear.

So of course I had to look up the current longest-serving player on each franchise. Though in some cases it depends how you ask the question. Kyle Seager has 1,000 games even for Seattle, but Felix Hernandez has been with them longer.

By games played, there has been some interesting player movement this winter so far. Carlos Santana was the active leader for Cleveland and is now with Philadelphia. Giancarlo Stanton was for Florida and is now a Yankee. Two guys – Matt Kemp and Chase Headley – went back to teams where they take over as active leaders (LA and SD; Kemp for the Dodgers on the assumption that he will stay with LA and Andre Ethier will not come back).

The active leaders in each league are, oddly perhaps, both guys who have mainly been catchers: Yadier Molina for St. Louis (1,747) and Joe Mauer for Minnesota (1,731).

Who is the Giants longest serving player now? Posey?

EDIT: Bumgarner made his debut 09/08/09 while Posey debuted 09/11/09.

Posey by games, of course, 1,039 games.

I think when comparing players, you have to go by date. Games played makes pitchers fall behind catchers who fall behind other positions. Tenure length is just number of days.

I was expecting the Padres to sign Alcides Escobar, it would be a Padre thing to do, sign a mediocre talent on the wrong side of 30 right when everyone else in the league comes to the conclusion he's not good enough to play anymore.

2017 Erick Aybar
2016 Alexei Ramirez
2015 Clint Barmes

Padres haven't had a good shortstop since really Ozzie Smith. Is there a curse of the Oz? Templeton immediately stopped being good once they traded for him. Tony Fernandez wasn't terrible his two years there, but not as good as he was before. Khalil Greene looked promising for a few years. My guess is average WAR for the position over 1982-2017 is about 1 per year.
