Padres add Tomko ahead of stretch drive

Damit, der Style!

The Padres, attempting to fortify their pitching staff for the September stretch drive, have signed right-hander Brett Tomko to serve as a long reliever and possible spot starter.

Tomko, 34, was designated for assignment by the Dodgers when Los Angeles signed left-hander David Wells, who had been released by the Padres.

Tomko was 2-11 with a 5.80 ERA with the Dodgers, but experienced relative success with the Padres in 2002, going 10-10 with a 4.49 ERA.

The Padres tried to acquire Blue Jays right-hander Josh Towers in a trade before last Friday’s deadline for setting postseason rosters, but the deal never came to fruition.

BWWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

That's what Padres fans said when the Dodgers signed David Wells.

These two moves (Wells to LA, Tomko to SD) make me think of the Germans and the French passing a couple of STD-infested ladies across enemy lines during the death throes of World War I...

Awesome way to introduce Tomko. "We see Brett as kind of a poor man's Josh Towers. With a lot more miles on him."

A fact that delights the Boston Red Sox to no end.

Oh shiznit...
I don't think it'll make that much of a difference, he's the Pads 5th starter right now and probably won't make the playoff roster, he's just here to eat innings.

In another September move today, the Brewers acquired lefty reliever Ray King from Washington for PTBNL (likely a low-level minor-league pitcher).

Am I stupid because it took me a minute to understand why "Ray King leaves" was funny? I say yes.

He's not eligible for the postseason - he joined the Padres' organization after September 1.

Oh come on now, kids, it's not like the Padres are making the postseason anyhow...

It would be so sweet if Tomko and Wells go head to head in the upcoming homestand.
