Padres bullpen coach Akerfelds dies at 50

RIP, Darrel Akerfelds.

SAN DIEGO—Padres bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds, the longest-tenured member of the coaching staff, lost his nearly two-year battle with pancreatic cancer on Sunday in Phoenix. He was 50.

Both of my grandmothers died of pancreatic cancer. I'm surprised that he lived for two years. Hopefully he made the most of them.

Pancreatic cancer sucks. RIP.

I recall when Akerfelds was nicknamed "KOOL-FM" because of his 94.5 spring training ERA.
