Padres, City of San Diego pay homage to Selig

Maybe he has a literal fetish for new architecture? Anyone ever think of that?

By the time Padres president and CEO Mike Dee caught wind of Bud Selig’s farewell tour of Major League ballparks, the wheels were already turning as to how the team was going to pay tribute to the outgoing Commissioner… the Padres honored Selig with a dedication ceremony of the Selig Hall of Fame Plaza at Petco Park, which sits behind the Western Metal Supply Building, next to 13 palm trees, waving gently in the breeze during the 20-minute ceremony before Tuesday’s game against the Brewers, which the Padres won, 4-1.

Dee said the area will serve as a home to the Padres Hall of Fame and eventually statues in the plaza to honor Padres greats as well as a plaque to honor Selig, not just for his overall achievements to baseball during his 22-year tenure as Commissioner but the specific accomplishment of helping to keep baseball afloat in San Diego.

The Selig Hall of Fame Plaza will be open year-round to fans… San Diego County supervisor Ron Roberts declared Tuesday as “Bud Selig Day” in San Diego County and its 18 cities…

Several speakers praised Selig for his role in helping to keep baseball prospering in San Diego, first during its difficult financial period of 1993, the infamous “fire sale” that saw the trades of Gary Sheffield and Fred McGriff and then, later, when the team was trying to get its downtown ballpark built…

“... I look at this ballpark and remember Jack Murphy Stadium. So we’ve come a long way…” [Selig said]

What a ####### year! Yet another season of cursed performance (The Curse of the Garvey, I tell you!)! Preceded by the death of our beloved Jerry Coleman, punctuated by the death of our beloved Tony Gwynn, and now this!!! #### you, Bud Selig! #### you, Padres ownership group! #### you, Mike Dee!

Thank you for allowing me to vent.

Not really much of a Selig homage without the swastikas and Hitler 'stache.

The Padres are retiring the Selig haircut.

Did they pay homage by contracting?

The way I look at it, at least we're getting the nauseating farewell tours for both Jeter and Selig out of the way at once, thereby containing the evil to one year.

Does Selig really deserve a farewell tour?

Hows abouts a 3 hour tour? A 3 hour tour.

alilisd - Amen! Couldn't have said it better myself!

This is yet another pathetic attempt by Padres ownership to fit in with the slime that pervades the B.S. era. They aren't even remotely in touch with the fan base nor do they care to even try. So I guess we shouldn't be surprised by such shenanigans. But at least some fans AREN'T on board with this sleazeball move by the Padres and have voiced their discontent in a petition to stop this madness.

Oh, well, look at the bright side - at least the Yankees aren't coming to San Diego this year so we don't have to watch the Padres ownership fall all over themselves to kiss Derek Jeter's a**!

Would love to see Bud make a farewell stop in Houston. Astro fans are usually pretty docile, but it might turn into a soccer environment, with objects raining down on the field.
Urine bombs, anyone?

I would pay real money to see this.

Put that on pay-per-view and make a fortune!
