Padres Designate Jeff Francoeur For Assignment

Frenchy wasn’t really pitching well enough at El Paso (6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 HR, 3 BB, 4 K, 3 HBP) to justify a hitter/pitcher platoon with Jason Lane, but hell, I’d still like to see it.

The Padres have designated outfielder Jeff Francoeur for assignment to clear room for top prospect Rymer Liriano‘s promotion, tweets Marty Caswell of 1090 radio in San Diego.

The 30-year-old Francoeur recently joined the Friars’ big league club after spending much of the season with Triple-A El Paso, but he collected just a pair of hits and three walks in 28 trips to the plate… The former top prospect and Rookie of the Year candidate did enjoy a nice season with El Paso this year, as he batted a healthy .294/.325/.465 with 15 homers in 416 plate appearances.

Haha, good practical joke.

When you're not good enough to crack the Padres stellar lineup...well, it's probably time to hang 'em up.

Easily the best walk rate of his career.

Cool guy. The A's fans loved him. Too bad he couldn't hit major league pitching.

Not to mention his stellar negative-21 (!) OPS+ in 28 PA, which I thought would've been hard to do. Turns out, there have been no less than 180 players who have managed an OPS+ of worse than -20 with at least 28 PA in a season.

Interesting list. I remember Chuck Scrivener with the '77 Tigers; the man truly could not (in the immortal words of Lasorda) hit the water if he fell out of a f@#kin' boat...

Francoeur doesn't even lead this year's Padres in negative OPS+. I don't know if Jace Peterson will get any more MLB at bats to give Francoeur the title.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

He's only 30?? Seems like this joint has been talking about him since forever, and mostly in unfavorable terms.

This could be the last Frenchy thread. That and the Robin Williams news has me pensive this evening. I know what, let's post a "Transaction Oracle" thread about Frenchy. There, I feel better.

I don't think we've seen the last of Frenchy. He's said he's ready and willing to become a full-time pitcher if being a position player doesn't work out.

You'd have to think that a guy with his arm, who apparently has a pretty good slider, would have a shot to make it to the big leagues as a pitcher. Maybe he won't get there, but I expect he'll be close enough that we're still talking about him.

the guy who just won "The Bachelorette" is a failed high-pick minor leaguer who couldn't hit better pitching. on the show, he's 29 and lives in Atlanta and is listed as "former pro baseball player" even though he hasn't played for a couple of years. his brother is the former Georgia QB whom the Chiefs drafted this year.

the Bachelorette dude not only reminds me of a Frenchy type who didn't make it, but he wins the gal (at least on the show). Even when you don't win, you win.
