Padres reliever Jose Torres suspended rest of season for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy

San Diego Padres reliever Jose Torres has been suspended for the rest of the 2018 season for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic abuse policy, commissioner Rob Manfred announced Friday.

The suspension is retroactive to June 5 and covers 100 games. Torres will not appeal and enter a treatment program.

“We fully support the decision by the commissioner’s office to suspend Jose Torres for violating the joint MLB-MLBPA domestic violence policy,” the Padres said in a statement. “We will continue to support the league’s efforts to educate players and prevent instances like this from occurring in the future.”

I'm glad I'm not the only one who did that.

Burns: Get me Joe Torre!
Smithers; He's unavailable, sir.
Burns: Then get me his non-union Mexican equivalent!

Wouldn't there be a conflict of interest in Joe Torre deciding his own punishment?

Ordinarily, I'd say so, but insofar as this punishment not only results in suspension, but keeps the subject under Padres control, I'd say it's sufficiently harsh to defuse any suggestion he'd gone easy on himself.

Are suspended players only forbidden from appearing in games, or can he also not be in the clubhouse soaking up the proven veteran leadership and characteriness of Eric Hosmer?
