Padres said to have chosen A.J. Preller for GM

Good hire. He’s pretty funny in those Sprint Framily commercials.

The Padres are expected to introduce Rangers assistant general manager A.J. Preller as their GM on Wednesday at a news conference at Petco Park, according to a Major League source. The club has not confirmed the news….

Preller was in his 10th season in the Rangers organization, where his current duties have him overseeing the team’s player-development and scouting departments, though it’s in the international market—Latin America, specifically—where Preller has distinguished himself.

The Rangers’ international program—populated by players like Yu Darvish, Rougned Odor, Leonys Martin and Jurickson Profar—ranks among the best in all of baseball. In fact, the Rangers’ 40-man roster has Preller’s fingerprints all over it.

Two of the elements the Padres were looking for in a GM were a top talent evaluator and someone who can make inroads in the international market. Preller fits the bill on both counts….

Preller, 36, was a roommate of Rangers GM Jon Daniels at Cornell University. He got his start in baseball as an intern with the Phillies.

Fans in San Diego are a little leery of GMs named "A.J." after what the Chargers went through...

I had high hopes for a split second that they had hired AJ Pierzynski. But I guess we don't deserve such awesomeness.

Bud Black has probably overstayed his welcome, and I bet Norv could be had for a song...

Yu Darvish, Rougned Odor, Leonys Martin and Jurickson Profar

Now they're just making names up.

And Hinch had his hopes up so high when he heard rumors they were going to hire someone named "A.J."...

Kim Ng ... ticks all the boxes on the EEO form.

(Seriously, I feel sorry for her. Is anybody genuinely interviewing her at this stage?

Working at the MLB central office is probably nice in terms of job security, but the longer she's working there, the weaker her resume becomes as a GM candidate. Most teams want someone who can point at their track record of talent evaluation, especially of amateurs, and that becomes harder to do the longer you've been working outside of a team's front office.

Not that I'm trying to be critical of her. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that she took the MLB job because it was just a much more attractive offer than smashing her head against the glass ceiling at the team level. I also wouldn't be surprised if there was a female commissioner before there was a female GM.

She has a nice resume, but not an outstanding resume. I'm not sure she has qualifications that are going to make her stand out from other candidates who have served in a front office for a decade. Logan White is a man with an impressive scouting background with the Dodgers and a long track record in a front office that seems to also get passed over a lot, including for this job.

If any discrimination is working against her at this point, I imagine its her age. The trend is towards younger guys - the Padres hired a 36 year old and also interviewed 30 somethings Mike Chernoff, Billy Eppler, and Mike Hazen. I imagine she'll get hired someday as a GM, but its not like she's the most qualified person out there continually getting passed over.

It also hurts she wasn't fraternity brothers with Jon Daniels I suppose.

Australian Rules Football is the roughest, most testosterone-fueled sport on the planet. And it's largely run by women.

This seems insane; there is real value to experience. It must be driven by MLB's refusal to pay front office folks a decent wage, so that all the smart folks are gone by 35 if they don't make it to one of the top 2 or 3 positions.

In an ideal world, I'd want someone to have 20 years of real front office experience before hiring them as my GM.

I think it's mostly related to the fact that being an MLB GM is a 90-hours-a-week job, and people in their 20s and 30s are much more likely to have the energy required to do it -- not to mention less likely to have families pulling them away from the office.
