Palm Beach Post: Little play stops Webb’s big run

Not even Brandon Webb can beat the Florida Marlins.

With slumping shortstop Hanley Ramirez out of the lineup, the Marlins used a bunt and a blast to defeat Arizona 3-1 Wednesday night, ruining Webb’s bid to become the third pitcher since World War I to win his first 10 starts.

“With Webb, it’s (like) riding one of those tough rodeo bulls. You got to hang on. He gives you tough at-bats, and we battled,’ manager Fredi Gonzalez said after the first-place Marlins’ second straight win.
...
After getting off to a hot start against teams that hadn’t played well, the Marlins (26-19) have now won two straight against Arizona (28-18), which arrived in South Florida with the best record in baseball. Florida’s win Tuesday was its first against an opponent with a winning record since May 1.

“We’ll just keep plugging away,” [Kevin] Gregg said. “Everybody is looking at you like, ‘These guys aren’t any good.’ But we’re at the top of the division, where everybody wants to be.”

Next stop for the Dbacks: 4 games in Atlanta, where the Braves are 20-5.
A lucky win on this 4 game set would be a major accomplishment for AZ.

How good are the D-Backs when they aren't playing the crappy NL West?

20-5 in their own division, but 3-6 against the Central and 3-7 against the West.
