Papelbon Enters to Alice in Chains’ ‘Man in the Box’, Gets Booed After Three Pitches

Feed my lips, now you’ve sewn them shut…

The entrance ended months of speculation about which tune would play as Papelbon enters games at Citizens Bank Park. The right-hander, of course, used the Dropkick Murphys’ hit “Shipping Up to Boston” during his tenure with the Red Sox, but the song obviously wouldn’t be appropriate now that he’s toeing the rubber down in Philadelphia.

Even more interesting is what happened three pitches into Monday’s appearance, which came in the ninth inning of what was—at the time—a 5-2 Marlins lead. Papelbon served up a home run to Austin Kearns, which prompted the Phillies fans to boo their $50-million closer.

One can only imagine what will take place the first time Papelbon blows a save in front of the home crowd.

Local stores have a run on Duracells?

for those of you who weren't pro wrestling fans in the mid-90s, "man in the box" was the entrance music for tommy dreamer when he was, basically, the heart and soul of the philadelphia-based extreme championship wrestling (ECW).

we're now probably about 15 years past the peak of ECW, so the reference is either dated or unintentional, but the song definitely has philadelphia roots (even though tommy dreamer is from long island).

I am the dog who gets beat.
Shove my nose in ####.

Doesn't seem like uplifting music for a closer.

It's certainly amusing to me Papelbon pitched in this game and not yesterday.

Is he the one who looked like a regular dude, but carried around a beatin' cane for some reason? Or was that the Sandman? And which one always chugged a cheap beer on his way into the ring?

That was Sandman.

Sandman had a beer and a cane. Interestingly, Dreamer also often used a cane, aka kendo stick aka singapore cane, in his fights.

tommy dreamer was the guy who never won a match or a title, and sold branded merchandise out of the back of his van after the shows.

that's basically tommy dreamer in a nutshell.

I'd lean toward the "unintentional" reference, but any time we can talk ECW, it's fine with me. Big Dick Dudley FTW!

Not to worry, Bill Baer took note.

Sabu's ECW theme song is just itching to be adopted by a closer.

Someone tell me what I'm missing here. The author says "of course," as if I'm supposed to know this, but who the heck would know this? I've never even heard of the Dropkick Murphys or that song before.

The article is from New England Sports Network, the house organ of the Red Sox so the writer is assuming he's writing for Sox fans who would know already.

I knew it, but only because of a previous article posted on BBTF about Papelbon's entrance music.

And of course, Jeff Jones is now the Tigers pitching coach. I dunno if he still wears aqua jeans under his judge's robes, though.

I had never even heard of Jonathan Papelbon or this game called "baseball" before clicking the link.
   18. Greg (U)K Posted: April 09, 2012 at 08:10 PM (#4101893)
At one point the ump called timeout when a gust of wind blew dust into his face at home plate, interrupting Papelbon's motion. Papelbon then seemed to give the ump the old "what the #### are you doing, moron!" gesture. I'd say it's just my anti-Papelbon bias but I actually didn't know who was pitching at the time, I thought, who the hell is this jerk?. Once it zoomed in to him I thought, ah...that makes sense.

It's one of two closer songs I know, now that Trevor Hoffman is retired. I think I'm pretty typical of baseball fans in that.

EDIT: Also Matt Capps's "Big Bull Rider", if he still uses that with the Twins. And if he's still the Twins closer. The Twins have zero wins and he has zero appearances, so he must be.

Neither a Red Sox fan nor a Gaelic rock fan, but I knew the song and that Papelbon used it. I think the song became really well known in the movie The Departed. I also think that, as far as closer music goes, Papelbon's music was fairly well known.

There was an article here on BBTF during spring training on how the Dropkick Murphys explicitly forbade Papelbon from using their music as his song in Philadelphia, and there was some speculation as to what his new Entrance Music would be.

I was mildly curious.

Though to be fair, they didn't forbid him from using it, nor did they want to.

Toasting in epic ECW bread.

I didn't start watching ECW until 1997 or 1998 or so, which was after Tommy Dreamer's heyday.

I saw the Dropkick Murphys in Philadelphia many years ago. They play footage of old Bruins fights during their show. Since Philadelphia is one of the few hockey towns that worships their enforcers more than Boston, I found this to be mildly offensive.

Most ECW has aged about as well as Alfonso Soriano.

Yes, though Angry Amish Road Kill should always merit a mention in any ECW thread.

Chickens!

Papelbon and "Shipping up to Boston" - the origin.

(Technically that's not the origin, but a reprise. I can't find a video of the first "Shipping up to Boston" step dance, which saw Papelbon drunkenly stepping in his bike shorts after the Sox won the division.)

Ah, here's the origin of Papelbon's association to "Shipping up to Boston", sadly with Don and Jerry giggling over half of it.

I'm sure Papelbon is thanking god he moved to a place with a saner, better-natured fanbase than where he was last.

a home run to Austin Kearns

Austin Kearns is still in the majors?
   31. Crispix Attacks 2: Swag Airlines Posted: April 10, 2012 at 10:43 AM (#4102568)
Austin Kearns has just as many home runs as Adam Dunn this year, and a higher batting average (.167)!

Papelbon also used 'Wild Thing'
