we're now probably about 15 years past the peak of ECW, so the reference is either dated or unintentional, but the song definitely has philadelphia roots (even though tommy dreamer is from long island).
Shove my nose in ####.
Doesn't seem like uplifting music for a closer.
Is he the one who looked like a regular dude, but carried around a beatin' cane for some reason? Or was that the Sandman? And which one always chugged a cheap beer on his way into the ring?
that's basically tommy dreamer in a nutshell.
Not to worry, Bill Baer took note.
Someone tell me what I'm missing here. The author says "of course," as if I'm supposed to know this, but who the heck would know this? I've never even heard of the Dropkick Murphys or that song before.
I knew it, but only because of a previous article posted on BBTF about Papelbon's entrance music.
It's one of two closer songs I know, now that Trevor Hoffman is retired. I think I'm pretty typical of baseball fans in that.
EDIT: Also Matt Capps's "Big Bull Rider", if he still uses that with the Twins. And if he's still the Twins closer. The Twins have zero wins and he has zero appearances, so he must be.
Neither a Red Sox fan nor a Gaelic rock fan, but I knew the song and that Papelbon used it. I think the song became really well known in the movie The Departed. I also think that, as far as closer music goes, Papelbon's music was fairly well known.
There was an article here on BBTF during spring training on how the Dropkick Murphys explicitly forbade Papelbon from using their music as his song in Philadelphia, and there was some speculation as to what his new Entrance Music would be.
I was mildly curious.
Though to be fair, they didn't forbid him from using it, nor did they want to.
I didn't start watching ECW until 1997 or 1998 or so, which was after Tommy Dreamer's heyday.
Chickens!
(Technically that's not the origin, but a reprise. I can't find a video of the first "Shipping up to Boston" step dance, which saw Papelbon drunkenly stepping in his bike shorts after the Sox won the division.)
Ah, here's the origin of Papelbon's association to "Shipping up to Boston", sadly with Don and Jerry giggling over half of it.
Still waiting for your mom to have the electricity turned on in her basement, I see.
Austin Kearns is still in the majors?
