R(etire)IP, Jayson Werth. He was hitting .206 in AAA this year. I will fondly remember him hitting 2nd in an elimination NLDS game just a few months ago.

Padres at Rangers tonight; it’s a toasty 102° F.

I have no idea who’s pitching. I know only a few of the Padres (Myers, Hosmer ... who else?) But it’s baseball!!

There’s a Georgia beer on offer called Sweetwater 420. What is that, hemp ale? I might try one. Tonight’s autograph Ranger is Austin Bibens-Dirkx, who sounds like a Dutch Golden Age painter. I love this game.
   14. BDC Posted: June 27, 2018 at 06:50 PM (#5701096)
Update: I have also seen Freddy Galvis, with Philadelphia.

The 420 is dankly hoppy. It also claims to be named after an interstate, yeah, I’m sure.

This is one of those nights with no batting practice because it is too fracking hot.
   15. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 27, 2018 at 07:51 PM (#5701132)
Angels already losing, on their way to another loss. Zack Cozart is going to have shouder surgery, done for the season. That's two position players, two relievers, and a starter done for the season in a six week stretch, and that doesn't even count Ohtani.

The season started so great. It's wrenching how utterly horrible things have been the last six weeks. The team didn't go bad, it exploded.
   16. rconn23 Posted: June 27, 2018 at 08:02 PM (#5701141)
Turn on Twitter, and see Luis Cessa already trending. An hour into the game, I knew that couldn't be good. There has to be a better fill in option than Luis Cessa. There just has to be. He is awful.

So like, why don't you just punch a wall while taking a spill on your motorbike, after getting hit by a pitch...

Go Giants !
   18. Chip Posted: June 27, 2018 at 08:06 PM (#5701144)
With J.D. Martinez’s 3-run HR, the Red Sox have now outscored the Angels 42-4 in 38 innings played so far this year.

GRITTY! GUTTY!!
   21. BDC Posted: June 27, 2018 at 08:16 PM (#5701149)
Isiah Kiner-Falefa catching for Texas. He broke in as a SS and has been mainly a utility infielder, but he caught some in the high minors and makes his third ML start there tonight. He’s a mediocre hitter, but if he can catch he’ll have a decent career as a backup at least.
   22. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 27, 2018 at 08:21 PM (#5701152)
Are this year's Rangers the first team to have two hyphenated players?

'Bibens-Dirkx, meet Kiner-Falefa. Kiner-Falefa, Bibens-Dirkx.'
   23. BDC Posted: June 27, 2018 at 08:33 PM (#5701157)
Kiner-Falefa has an odd stance, plants his back leg, fidgets with his front foot, then hikes up his front knee as he swings. He pops out feebly in his first PA tonight.
   24. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: June 27, 2018 at 08:33 PM (#5701158)
Isiah Kiner-Falefa

If you're a baseball player, you really need to go by Kiner.

Adrian Beltre ties Hank Aaron with his 624th double, and passes Sammy Sosa with his 1,668th RBI.

And now ties Frank Thomas with 1,494 Runs.

Long-time listener, first time (this year) caller. I bit on the "Father's Day" MLB.TV (what happened to the multi-screen???) and just want to report that when one gives up caring about wins and losses, following the Mets and their unparalleled broadcast crew is sheer pleasure. I'm a Ms "fan," and 2018 is a pleasant surprise, but listening to Cohen and Co. is so much more fun, ineptitude be damned, than any Mariners broadcast. Or maybe, in a way, it's because of the ineptitude. Unsurpassed, and having listened to just about all markets, it's not even close.

following the Mets and their unparalleled broadcast crew is sheer pleasure.

They are very good,

With runners on 1st and 3rd, another nice RBI bunt single by Delino Deshields.
   29. Chip Posted: June 27, 2018 at 09:10 PM (#5701171)
What’s the point of replay again? Albert Pujols just delivered the most phantom of phantom tags on a play at first base, the phantomness of which was confirmed by multiple video angles ... and New York upheld the original out call.
   30. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: June 27, 2018 at 09:10 PM (#5701172)
What’s the point of replay again?

To drive me nuts?
   31. jacksone (AKA It's OK...) Posted: June 27, 2018 at 09:18 PM (#5701178)
That Nunez out call was probably thd biggest instant replay miss I have seen. He was clearly safe, from multiple angles...
   32. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 27, 2018 at 09:22 PM (#5701179)
Adrian Beltre ties Hank Aaron with his 624th double, and passes Sammy Sosa with his 1,668th RBI.

And now ties Frank Thomas with 1,494 Runs.

And to think the Red Sox could've signed this guy for 5/75 after paying him like $5 mil for one year after his Seattle days.

Yeah, I'm still f*cking furious about it. He was happy in Boston and everyone wanted him to stay. Except management.
   33. BDC Posted: June 27, 2018 at 09:45 PM (#5701190)
Hosmer breaks up Mike Minor’s bid for a perfect game with a one-out single in the seventh. I have never seen anyone take a no-hitter that far. More & more suspenseful, and I couldn’t even Chatter about it! :)
   34. frannyzoo Posted: June 27, 2018 at 09:49 PM (#5701193)
Part of the "listen/watch Cohen and Co.," a huge part, is putting up with the fact the Mets really suck. Familia pitching second night a in a row and it's already 1st and 3rd up 3-1. Wheeler's great start is replaced with...well, there are plenty here who can report more fully on what this is like.

   35. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 27, 2018 at 09:56 PM (#5701196)
Red Sox beginning to soil the bed, 6-6 now...
   36. BDC Posted: June 27, 2018 at 09:57 PM (#5701197)
Odd play in the bottom of the 7th: Beltre on first, Rougned Odor hits a sharp grounder to Hosmer. The play’s at second, of course - but the ball gets to Hosmer so fast that Beltre is still standing right next to him. Hosmer throws to second anyway and the return throw is too late for the DP. He might have made it unassisted. (Or maybe not, of course.)

Odor steals 2B and scores on a fluky hit by Kiner-Falefa, who in turn is thrown out trying to stretch the fluke into a double.
   37. frannyzoo Posted: June 27, 2018 at 10:07 PM (#5701203)
This has turned out to be an excellent game/evening to bring up the Mets broadcast team. Up 3-0 an hour ago, it's now 5-3 Pirates and the mystifying decisions of Callaway have been succinctly dissected. It's a drought year, and the Mets broadcast team is excellent in laying bare the dearth of thought process. Oh, if only every "homer" team could do the same when situations warrant.

   38. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 27, 2018 at 10:14 PM (#5701204)
Heyward 2nd against a LHP? #### that noise (.534 OPS this year vs lefties). Plus I'm pretty sure his hot streak is over.

Javy still locked in though.
   39. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 27, 2018 at 10:15 PM (#5701205)
Red Sox plate 2 more in the 7th, now up 8-6.

Willson, also Javying.

Matt Carpenter might be one of the worst (not slowest) baserunners in the league...

How can a wiry and reasonably fit-looking player NOT score from 2b on what was essentially a hard-hit ground ball down the line past the first baseman? The RF hustled over to it, but Carpenter was just hitting the 3b bag as the RF came up throwing, and he stopped at third. Watching the replay, I'm not surprised that Carpenter held up---I'm surprised that he was just getting to the bag when he did.

He must have gotten a horrible jump, or assumed the ball was foul, I don't know... but it's very characteristic of this team to give the appearance of being unprepared, and having poor reactions to normal baseball events.

If a hitter's on second, he should be thinking "SCORE ON A BASE HIT" and get a good secondary lead and be ready to fly when the bat meets ball.
   44. BDC Posted: June 27, 2018 at 10:27 PM (#5701214)
Pitching change with 2 out in the bottom of the 8th ... a game that looked like it would finish in 2:30 may be headed closer to three hours ... still fast for these days.
   45. Meatwad Posted: June 27, 2018 at 10:27 PM (#5701215)
Is it just me or was ball 4 there a strike?

Shut up, Turner.

HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

You're seeing a pretty good example of it tonight.

Trout's 2018 OPS against the Red Sox, not counting tonight's 1 single in 4 AB: .661

Trout's 2018 OPS against the Yankees: 1.436

Weekend matchups:

Friday: Rodriguez vs Sabathia

Saturday: Sale vs (OUCH!) Gray

Sunday: Price vs Severino

Red Sox bring in Kimbrel in the 8th to put out the fire...

And he throws a WP to put 2 in scoring position
   51. Meatwad Posted: June 27, 2018 at 10:33 PM (#5701222)
And heyward did not help matters there by slipping. This could be a long night.

Fire doused, hopefully Kimbrel ok for 9th after throwing a whopping 13 pitches!

my Mets buddy on Twitter (I kind of admire his fire but I fear for his health) on Calloway

Mickey Calladoo is the worst manager/coach in the history of New York sports. There’s not even a comparison to people like former contenders Rich Kotite, Buddy Harrelson, Ray Handley, Bob Hill, Jerry Manuel, Dallas Green and Derek Fisher. Calladoo wins that competition hands down
   56. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 27, 2018 at 10:45 PM (#5701235)
Hendricks really has a HR problem this year, but also a hard hit problem tonight.
   57. Meatwad Posted: June 27, 2018 at 10:48 PM (#5701240)
Yay he finally got one on the edge of the zone.

Usually a late arriving crowd. They said last night was the highest attendance of the season for any game.

woohoo, WP bring in another run, 9-6 good guys.

Andy's prophecy of the Sox never losing again is coming true. Hey chicken little watch out for that sky!
   64. Meatwad Posted: June 27, 2018 at 11:00 PM (#5701249)
I was up at 430 eastern time for work. My normal is going to bed at that time so shitty pitching plus lack of sleep among other things means i just need to shut it down. Nothing good will come of staying up for it
   65. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: June 27, 2018 at 11:06 PM (#5701251)
Friday: Rodriguez vs Sabathia

Saturday: Sale vs (OUCH!) Gray

Sunday: Price vs Severino

One thing I've learned in my 53 years is that stuff never goes according to plan. The Sox could drop that Sale game like 5-4 after the pen blows a 3 run lead and then come back and tag Severino for like 7 runs in the first 4 innings and win that one going away like 10-2...You just never know about these things.

   67. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 27, 2018 at 11:10 PM (#5701254)
He's had a rough go, and he'll never be maddux, but he still has a career 134era+ while throwing 85.

I believe the single-season record for one-run wins is 36 by the 2016 Texas Rangers. If Seattle pulls a win tonight, it will be their 25th one-run victory and they will have another 81 games to play

................

(does this bode well for a postseason run? in this case, I'd bet the under.
wait, I live in NJ, so.......)

Maples sure is missing the hickory with the amount of movement on his pitches. Makes one wonder how his WHIP is a whopping 2.25 coming into this game.

That was center cut. Rizzo hasn't looked this bad for this long since 2013.
   75. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: June 28, 2018 at 07:28 AM (#5701304)
Yanks and Red Sox now tied in percentage at .667, but the Red Sox are half a game ahead by having played 3 more games and won 2 of them.

Not much really to choose between them. The Red Sox have a slightly better run differential (1.5 to 1.3) and a slightly better Pythag (53-28 to 50-28), but the Yankees have a big edge in games against teams with winning record (25-10 vs 18-13). As long as you're not a fan of the also ran teams, this is the best season long division race since the leagues went to divisions.
