PB Post: Hall of Famer Jim Palmer awarded $890,000 for eye damage

Extra! Extracrapsular!...Read all about it!

On Monday, a Palm Beach County jury agreed the former Baltimore Orioles pitching great deserved $890,000 for the fear, pain and lost income he sustained after being forced to undergo the operation his attorney insisted was completely avoidable.

Had Dr. Tom Coffman better monitored Palmer’s care after he had a cataract removed and an artificial lens implanted in his left eye, the part-time Palm Beach resident’s retina would never have become detached, attorney Gary Cohen argued throughout the two-week-long trial that ended with a surprise charge of jury misconduct. Further, he said, Coffman should have never implanted the controversial multifocal intraocular lens in Palmer’s eye in the first place.

...“I’m no different than anyone else,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re in the Hall of Fame or not. It changes your life.” He said he hopes others will learn from his experience.

“I had tremendous trust for doctors and I think some of that trust was violated,” he said. “Maybe this will open up some eyes.” For his part, Coffman described the verdict as “unfortunate.” “I’ve always provided the highest quality of care to patients for the last 35 years and that’s not going to change,” said Coffman, a Manalapan town commissioner who has operated some 20 eye clinics in South Florida.

How much of those damages are from Palmer being unable to look at himself in the mirror?

“Maybe this will open up some eyes.”

....he said with an eyeronic smirk.

"eye damage" is one of those phrases I just can't deal with. Most horror films don't really make me squirm, but piercing or puncturing of a human eye is something which freaks me out.

When I first read the title, I thought he was awarded that cash for having to watch the Orioles.

If I could take one BBTF trope out behind the shed and shoot it dead, it would be the "when I first read this I thought it said [X}" one.

What would Ted Frank say about this?

Paul Byrd said he should've gone to a dentist.

My father had surgery to repair a detached retina. It is no joke. Essentially they suck out your eyeball juice, attach a screen to the back of your eye with glue. Refill your eyeball juice and put some bubbles in there for positive pressure to stick the retina to the screen. Then you have to lay on one side without moving for a week. It takes a few weeks for the bubbles to go away.

Yeah I don;t want to have that.

When I first read this, I thought it said, "From the moment I was six I felt sexy. And let me tell you it was hell, sheer hell, waiting to do something about it."

In other news, Palmer has agreed to finally give back the 1976 Cy Young Award he stole from Mark "The Bird" Fidrych.

You'd think there was a glaucoma pun to be made here, but no, there isn't. At least, not a good one.

Will Palmer be putting the money into a blind trust?

I don't know if 18 was actually funny, or if I just laughed because I was amazed that I got it.

How does this affect Rod Kanehl and David Cone?

#18: you didn't exactly change my mind. ;-) (I was thinking more shoot = Glock = glaucoma, btw.)
