Pedro Martinez returns to Boston as assistant to GM

“(Pedro) was one of the game’s most dominant pitchers and without a doubt a beloved figure in Red Sox history,” Cherington said. “Similar to former teammate Jason Varitek, who joined the baseball operations staff in September, Pedro will be involved in several areas, including the evaluation, mentorship, and instruction of young players in spring training and throughout the season.”

Wake up the Bambino, a Red Sox hero comes home…

I bet he'll do a good job, but they'll leave him in a batter or two too long.

This makes me happy even if it turns out to be just window dressing. Anything that keeps Pedro involved is a good thing. I hope he's at Spring Training, it's always fun to see guys like Evans and Yaz (even if he is a curmudgeon) walking around working with the kids.

it's an Onion headline, right?

I read this headline as "Pedro Martinez returns to Boston as assistant GM", which was rather more startling than the actual story.

Ahhh, Curmudgeon's wouldn't be there in the first place, Jose. But I agree entirely with the rest of your sentiment.

If we get close in September, can we activate him? He's only 41.

I would have loved to watch him get a few starts last September instead of not-watching Cook, Matsuzaka and Zach Stewart.

assistant to GM

Not to be confused with Assistant GM.

I don't know about starts, but he would have been a hell of a fireman even at the end. Of course, we're now a ways past the end.

After reading your post I had to double check the headline to see the subtle, Dwight Schrute like distinction.

Would not be surprised at all if this announcement is a prelude to Pedro attempting a comeback.

I think this is a way for him to retire as a Red Sock a la Carlton Fisk and get his number retired.

Pedro in any capacity is >>> no Pedro, in my book.

Not to be confused with Assistant GM.

Or assistant to the traveling secretary.

Hasn't this been a path to coaching for a number of players? It seems like there's been more than a few times when a pitching/hitting coach gets fired, he's replaced with a former player who has a front office job as opposed to someone who has been coaching in the minors or the like - generally guys who were stars and might not be all that keen on riding the bus in the minors again.

Not that I'm necessarily expecting Pedro to be pitching coach any time soon; I'm just hoping this means he's around to drop in on Don & Jerry or be interviewed during the pre-game show fairly often.

Why didn't he get another chance after 2009(?), when he pitched pretty decently in limited time?

I don't think he wanted to. He pitched poorly in 2008 and and he didn't want to go out on that note.
