Pepsi Promotion Ends With Chants of ‘Pepsi Sucks’

Yankees fans who showed up for a Pepsi-sponsored promotion yesterday were none too pleased after standing in line for hours only to find out fewer tickets were being given out than promised. According to the New York Post, “Chanting ‘Pepsi sucks! Pepsi sucks!’ the over-caffeinated mob cracked open cans of the soft drink and poured it onto the pile of swag, sending cops racing to the scene.” And there’s video! Video in which an angered fan also shouts, “Drink Coca-Cola!”

Phil Coke was not available for comment.

I cannot remember the last time I had a Pepsi. Maybe at a fast food restaurant when you have no choice of colas. If you think about it, isn't a cola a weird drink? I'll stop now before I go all Andy Rooney on your unsuspecting asses.

Be sure to watch the video for a highly enlightened assessment of the situation by one Yankee fan. My favorite part is her mention of the children being "mangled" by the crowd.

The crowd was further angered by Gossage's drive-by visit with the crowd.

"I hope you all get tickets!" was all the flamethrower, who tossed heat for the Bombers in the 70s and early 80s, was able to say before ducking back into his car, which was surrounded by admirers screaming his name.

Coke should hire Sparky Lyle for a promotion and make sure he talks to everybody.

or ####### rc ####### cola

RC Cola was always my favorite. I have a soft spot for Shasta since they were HQ'ed in Hayward, CA when I was a kid. My granndma used to buy the lemon-lime and diet cola by the case in those corrugated 4 inch high boxes with the indentation of the cans on the bottom. Man, thinking of Shasta makes me go all gooey with nostalgia. I can almost feel the texture of the rubber ball I used to throw against the wall of my grandma's house when I was pretending to pitch for the A's in the World Series. If I got wild and threw a pitch too low the ball would bounce over my head into a lemon tree behind me and the "other" team would win and I'd have to slink off the patio in shame.

"Oh, no! No, don't do that! You're supposed to be tasting it!"

"Hall of Famer Goose Gossage now in the square pleading with the crowd for... for some kind of sanity."

"Uh-oh... and a barrage of Pepsi now knocking Goose unconscious."

"Wow. This is, uhhh... this is a black day for baseball."

I haven't had a cola (or any other carbonated beverage, alas -- god, do I miss red cream soda) in years, but when I was drinking them my ranking would've been 1) RC 2) Pepsi 3) Coke. Though going waaaay back, Tab with Cyclamates would knock Coke to 4).

Of course, RC was the Mets' cola sponsor for many years (including 1969, IIRC), and in the late '80s, it was served at Yankee Stadium for a year or two.

I have two associations with RC. One is watching the Mets on WOR in the late 80s, and the other is my 4th grade teacher explaining that it's not polite for a young gentleman to drink RC, because RC is for field hands.

I love this story on so many levels. People lining up to get free tickets at 7am that they could afford to buy if they just worked for 2-3 hrs in a Burger King - and get a Pepsi there too. Mob turns bad. Pepsi does an excellent PR cover on it - they probably get more sales from this than if they had actually given away 1000 tickets. Even the stupidity of lining up with the hope you'll be one of the first 250 people. Great, great stuff.

And also, TFA says:

Furious fans tossed t-shirts, posters, crackerjack and [sic] ["and" WHAT?? -- ed.] into a big pile on the street.

Chanting "Pepsi sucks! Pepsi sucks!" the over-caffeinated mob cracked open cans of the soft drink and poured it onto the pile of swag, sending cops racing to the scene.
So yeah, if they went and bought Pepsi just so they could pour it onto random objects, I guess that increased sales right there.

Still trying to figure out what the hell happened here.

There used to be an RC Cola machine at the service station between Birdwood GC and my house off UVA's campus in Charlottesville. I would always stop and get one on the way home - they were only 35 cents. I completely agree that it is the most delicious of the major colas.

The only soda worth killing for is Diet Sunkist

Perhaps, but: they used to have this jingle that went

"No caffeine (dah, dah)
Diet Sunkist (Diet Sunkist)
No caffeine (dah, dah)
Diet Sunkist (Diet Sunkist)"

over and over and over again. And come to find that a few years ago they added caffeine.

I have probably drunk a couple of tanker cars' worth of pop in my life, but I rarely do anymore. I can't handle caffeinated pop; the sugar in non-caffeinated pop will certainly kill me if I drink any more of it. And there are very few good diet decaf sodas. Fresca (original or black cherry) is OK. So is diet-caffeine-free Dr Pepper. And I actually like Fanta Zero, orange flavor. But try finding these at a typical convenience store.

Recently on whim I bought a bottle of diet Orange Crush, no caffeine, and I really liked it. Well whenever I read the label, the second ingredient after water was high-fructose corn syrup. There was something like 50 calories a glass. No wonder it tasted good, but that's a pretty lardifying "diet."

And did'ja' ever notice how ...

Kosher Coke, if you can find it, uses real sugar. It's available in New York around Passover. Coke in Latin America tastes much better than here, IMHO, because of the sugar and I don't give a #### what those corn syrup propaganda ads have to say about it.

Parkersburg, WV was rotten with RC when I lived there between 1985-1988. Not sure why, but it was in all kinds of places, even fast food restaurants that I'm sure had deals with Coke or Pepsi at the time (must have been a rogue franchise thing). Anyway, I can tell you based on considerable experience that RC sucked in multiple, profound ways. Truly vile stuff. And don't even get me started on Diet Rite or Teem.

My point is that I suspect the RC love here is based on that particular irrational esteem many of us have for that which is rare, fleeting, and nearly forgotten. Like Priazzo at Pizza Hut and Alf and stuff.

Well, not if we're talking Church's Fried Chicken, here.

"Dublin Dr Pepper," made with sugar, used to be a rarity in Texas, something you could only get at or near the factories where it was made in small batches. It is now pouring into supermarkets at a great rate. Costs a lot more than corn-syrup Dr Pepper, though.

RC had the vending contract with Auburn University at least through my freshman year (and I think a little longer). Some RC products are still around a bit in central MA because the local beverage company (Polar) has a bottling contract for Diet Rite.

I really can't argue with this. I like a lot of their other sodas, but I can't handle the lethal sweetness of their cola. It was more just to point out the existence of a company which was still using proper sugar in their cola.

Diet sodas are primarily composed of pesticides and earwig honey, and should be avoided by all right thinking people.

Depends on where you live, but in suburban Chicago, most Mexican groceries (as well as Caputo's and Valli) carry it.

They also carry Jarritos; I recommend the lime and grapefruit. Sugar and natural flavoring - can't go wrong.

When I was on a cruise through the Caribbean, the Coke they served on the ship (and in the harbours) was definitely a different flavour than what I was used to up in Canada.
I don't know if it was "better", but since it was "different" it made it enjoyable to drink for the 7 days.

BTW, Coke >>>> Pepsi

The most disappointing phrase I hear in restaurants is "We serve Pepsi. Is that okay?" when I order a Coke.

RC Cola and a Moonpie. Breakfast of Champions.

When I was 20 years old and living on a salary of $18.36 a week, my breakfast was bacon, eggs & RC, my lunch was a coconut cream-filled cake and RC, and my dinner was a can of Campbell's Beans 'n' Ground Beef and RC. And there was no f*cking way that that menu fit for a king would have worked with Coke or Pepsi. It just wouldn't have been right.

Coke w/ sugar cane (a/k/a Mexican Coke) is often found in big shopping stores in the 'Hispanic Food' Section. I've bought it for years at a Milwaukee grocery chain (Pic'n-Save) even in the whitey suburbs. It is only in single glass bottles, around 16-20 ounces if I recall.

The WSJ did an article about this a couple years ago, it is illegal, but Coke, its bottlers and the Gov't doesn't do too much to try and stop it. I suppose there's not enough volume to get them excited. Obviously Coca-Cola uses the corn syrup version because it is cheaper and Americans don't seem to mind corn syrup over the cane sugar.

The WSJ did an article about this a couple years ago, it is illegal, but Coke, its bottlers and the Gov't doesn't do too much to try and stop it. I suppose there's not enough volume to get them excited. Obviously Coca-Cola uses the corn syrup version because it is cheaper and Americans don't seem to mind corn syrup over the cane sugar

There is a bottler in Texas that uses cane sugar instead of corn syrup in their Dr. Pepper. You can even order it online but it costs a fortune to ship it.

10 years ago I went cold turkey off caffeine, and 15 years before that I was unceremoniously forced off sugar sodas, so that really cuts down on my soda consumption.

The best non-sugar, non-caffeine sodas:

Diet Dr. Brown's Diet Cherry and Diet Cream Soda
Diet A & W Root Beer
Sprite Zero
Diet Canada Dry Cherry Ginger Ale
Diet Sierra Mist

Diet 7up kind of sucks.

When I see Mexican Coke, it lists something like "cane sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup" on the ingredient label, and I've bought it a couple times and it tasted exactly like regular Coke. My point is that you're not guaranteed to get the cane sugar type.

Pepsi is better than Coke.
Macs are better than PCs.
Cats are better than dogs.
Legs are better than breasts.

Well, you're right about Macs.

If I'm going to drink that many calories, it will be in the form of wholesome, nourishing alcohol.

This was precisely my reason for forcing myself to develop a taste for Diet Coke after college.

Have you tried varieties of Fanta Zero? The orange one is my beverage for when its too close to bedtime to have a Coke Zero.

I once drove a forty mile round trip for two 4-packs of COKE BLAK on a top shelf at a Target. A friend called me knowing I was crazy for it.

I don't know how to get your hands on Mexican Coke (apart from going to Mexico)

They seem to now be in supermarkets now. I live in Cincinnati, so I figure that if I can get them here, you can find them anywhere. Look in the section with all of the other Mexican food items, and there is a good chance you will find them. They are a bit pricey, though.

Well, if we're talking about non-cola sodas, Dr. Pepper is quite easily the winner.

And if Jones Cola is very sweet, I suppose I should try it. The whole reason I like Pepsi much more than Coke is because it's sweeter.

(Oh, and although Pepsi > Coke, Cherry Coke > Cherry Pepsi.)

Root Beer pretty much rocks the socks off all colas, Coca included. Kudos to the Bargs nod earlier in the thread. However, out of the tap from a decent A&W;outlet is almost tops. Almost. IBC Root Beer is the undisputed champion of flavor. Of course, here in England, they don't know even know what Root Beer is... Philistines.

Addendum:

A conversation while I was in high school circled the subject of giving up soft drinks. My friend's house was famous for being permanently and inexhaustibly stocked with soda of all varieties (what an oddly spelled word!). His decision to abandon it as a drink was met with due incredulity. 'What about Bargs?' I asked. 'That's different. It's Bargs.'

If you can wait until year, coke and pepsi sell kosher versions of their soda for passover, with real sugar. Its a bit more expensive(I bought mine at Ralph's for 3 two-liter bottles for $5 dollars), but worth it.

Beverages I consume, by quantity: water, beer, coffee, green tea, fruit juice, whiskey.

No soda, no sugar, a little honey, definitely no freaking high fructose corn syrup. Diet soda is the worst drink devised by humankkind.

But to each his own.

By the way, if you're watching calories and haven't tried Coke Zero yet, I strongly recommend it. I can still tell a difference between Zero and a regular Coke, but its far better than any version of Diet Coke I've ever tried.
Pepsi One > Coke Zero, though the latter's commercials are amusing. (I haven't seen any Pepsi One commercials in years. In fact, I don't think Pepsico has redesigned the Pepsi One 2-liters or cans to conform with the rest of the newly-packaged Pepsi line, which isn't a good sign.)

I prefer Pepsi to Coke, though I admit I like Diet Coke Plus.

At yesterday's Phils/Padres game, one of the names on the scoreboard during the "Happy Birthday" listings between innings was a year-old girl with the first name "Pepsi-Marie." I kid you not.

THe birthday girl's last name, BTW, is Vecchio.

Of course the real reason that US soft drinks use corn syrup instead of sugar is because of the price. Why is corn syrup cheaper? We can thank the sugar cartel for that, the price of sugar in the US is something like 2-3 times what the world price is. This is done with lots of tariffs on importing sugar. They get away with this because people think to themselves, "How much sugar do i buy, it's no big deal..." We're stuck with corn syrup so that American sugar companies can get rich. Incidentally, this is also why ethanol in this country is a disaster. Anyway... rant off...

I'm not sure if importing products with sugar in them is covered by the tariff, so I'm not sure that there's anything other than shipping charges preventing Mexican soft drinks from overrunning us. That would be... um, sweet.

The corn industry is hella lot stronger in America than the sugar industry. They're the ones who are getting billions of dollars in subsidies.
