Perrotto: Pirates should have three All-Stars

Let the deluge of “All-Star snub” articles begin!

It’s been a long time since the Pittsburgh Pirates sent three players to the All-Star Game.

In fact, it was so long ago that the Pirates were actually good then. That was in 1990 when Bobby Bonilla, Barry Bonds and Neal Heaton were the representatives at Wrigley Field in Chicago as the Pirates went on to win the first of three consecutive National League East titles.

I heartily endorse Perrotto’s suggested starting outfield of Jason Bay, Nate McLouth, and Pat Burrell.

But in the AL…the Orioles get two players, and one of them is Aubrey Huff?

Bay and Nady both deserve it statistically, but they get squeezed out by a few things. Fukudome being elected to start, the bizarre addition of Tejada and the one player per team rule that forces Adrian Gonzalez onto the team. Bay will probably get on anyway as will half of the other snubbed players due to injuries and withdrawls.

"forces Adrian Gonzalez onto the team."

Forces?

Well, he's not as good a hitter as Nady or Bay and he's the only Padre on the team. He actually was elected by the players, though, so I was wrong.

He was actually elected by the players and Pujols wasn't. That's odd.

Not as good a hitter as Nady or Bay? Based on what? OPS this season? Big whoop. Gonzalez crushes Nady as a hitter. I'll be nice to Bay and say he's comparable.

You can make a case for three Pirates in the ASG, but I think it needs to hinge on Doumit as the NL's third catcher, rather than Nady. Doumit's fifth among all catchers in RARP, despite mising all that time with his broken finger. Unfortunately, three of the guys a tiny bit ahead of him all play in the NL...

Gonzalez, career: .284/.345/.495, 122 OPS+
Bay, career: .282/.377/.515, 131 OPS+

Gonzalez, 2008: .284/.351/.525, 138 OPS+
Bay, 2008: .285/.388/.518, 140 OPS+

That's some powerful math you got there, Tex.

Dang. I knew Nady was having a good year but I didn't realize he had a 145 OPS+.

You've demonstrated an inability to consider park effects. What else should I glean from your post?

Factor those in, and consider a recent poor season from Bay, and I believe we have a clear winner, and it isn't him.

?

OPS+ includes park effects.

OPS+ includes park effects. Don't let that take the luster off your pom-pons though.

Oh yeah. Forgot about the * on that.

Doesn't change what I said about them being comparable, which Vlad seemed to think those numbers demonstrate to be false.

You said that you'd be "charitable" to Bay by calling them comparable, implying that Bay is similar, but a little worse. That was both inaccurate and misleading.

Gonzalez is a good hitter, but Bay is better. With or without "charity".
