Peter Gammons: The Pirates and the depreciating asset of Gerrit Cole - GammonsDaily.com

Most big Scott Boras clients come with an expiration date tag. Sometimes, that free agent promise date seems a distraction; their teams believe it in the cases of Jake Arrieta and Matt Harvey, but it never distracted Max Scherzer from his relentless drive for greatness.

I guess the Pirates No. 1 problem is that most of the stuff that went wrong last year hasn't improved. Cole and Harrison are the only guys who have really bounced back. There's not that much there to trade, so their best hope might be to keep Cole and hope to get lucky with the rotation one year before he leaves.

Here's a crazy thought, why don't the Pirates actually try locking up a young and improving starter they drafted and developed to a long term deal. I don't get trading away a pitcher who might move into the top echelon of starters in the next 2-3 seasons. Seems like Cole's contribution to the team moving forward might be more than the Pirates would get from any players they get in return.

I have a crazy thought, too. How about a team that might not be good enough over the next few years add another good player, rather than the opposite.

From the intro: Most big Scott Boras clients come with an expiration date tag.

Beyond that, how do we know they haven't tried?

Also the Pirates have locked up Polanco through 2023, Marte through 2021, Harrison through 2020 (if they want him) and Nova, Cervelli and Freese through 2019 (if they want the last two). A lot of those are options. They obviously have room for Cole past 2019 if they want but it's not like they haven't done a good job of signing up their young players, with lots of options, and keeping more marginal guys on shorter-term contracts.
