Phil Dumatrait retires from pro baseball

Begins the long process of tearing up pile of RC’s.

Former Ridgeview High and Bakersfield College pitcher Phil Dumatrait announced his retirement from professional baseball Sunday following a five-year major league career.

Arm troubles plagued the left-hander through much of a 12-year career that started when he was a first-round draft choice of the Boston Red Sox in 2000 after a stellar career at BC.

Dumatrait, 30, was coming off his best season in the big leagues. He was 1-3 with a 3.92 ERA in 45 games for the Minnesota Twins last season.

But another injury to his arm required surgery during the offseason.

Dumatrait may not have been a great pitcher, but the Pirates were darn glad to have him in '08, when Littlefield left the cupboard totally bare. I'll always be grateful to him for keeping me from watching Yoslan Herrera (OK, more Yoslan Herrera than I saw).

I saw him pitch his debut at RFK for the Reds in '07. He got hit hard - 6 runs in 3.1, lots of doubles. IIRC the velocity was solid for a lefty but he had little movement.

As a prospect, Dumatrait was said to have an excellent curveball, but he never really threw it all that much as a major leaguer. Was that a result of the injuries, or were the scouting reports incorrect, or what?

Sort of a baffling that a guy who had a plus curveball and an average fastball would throw <a href="http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=8598&positi>9.5 times more fastballs than curveballs over the course of his career</a>.
