Phil Hughes’ Mechanics: What’s The Deal?

When you are the youngest pitcher in Major League Baseball and being touted as the future ace of the New York Yankees, I suppose that it is normal to be under the microscope at all times. And, boy has Phil Hughes been under the microscope.

What has come in question about Hughes the most is his velocity and its relationship to his mechanics. Has his delivery changed as so many have speculated? If so, what has changed.

CBW and Hardball Times from May last year: part 1 here and part 2 here

Using the same 06 starting point, I think.

Edited to actually include a message.

CBW is the best.

Just remember, Phil Hughes is more valuable than Johan Santana.

This is one of the best new blogs out there. It's going to be invaluable come draft time.

Thanks Dingbat.

Actually, there will be an article coming out on THT, written by someone else who is MUCH smarter than me. It will be about another pitcher's struggle with velo loss, and the causes. I believe that it will relate to Hughes as well. I've gotten a sneak peek at the article coming out at THT, and I assure you that what this guy has to say FAR exceeds my understanding of the process.
Stay tuned....

Hey Carlos, did you get my e-mails?

SOSH--

no, did not... at least I don't remember.

Kevin---

hehe, you'll see. This article will make my stuff look like pure poop. It's THAT good.

I'll try again.

Aren't you missing about 150 million parts of that equation?

Is it an article on Barry Zito, Carlos?

I'm guessing you didn't pursue this line of conversation during your job interview.

Let's see how he pitches when it's not 30 degrees. He was terrific in his first start throwing 91-93.

Is it an article on Barry Zito, Carlos?

Yes. I was THIS close to writing a Zito article and the only reason I didn't do it was because the clips I had weren't convincing enough....the clips this guy has make his point much better. It is along the same lines I was thinking..only he has a much higher understanding and a better analogy than I could've come up with.

Do I win a prize?

Seriously though, I'm looking forward to reading that. Zito's loss of "stuff" has been shocking.

I don't really see any significant difference between those clips that can't be explained by the camera angle.

You should write blurbs for book covers. If I ever wrote an analysis book, I'd love to see that quote pushing it.
