Phil Wood, MASN: Not obsessing about .500

Dreaming in the District…

Today, on the heels of a four-game road sweep of the Phillies—coming just a week after a four-game road sweep of the Mets—the 76-win Nationals still have a shot at finishing above .500 should they go 5-1 in their final six games. That would be terrific, no?

Of course it would. But does it really matter that much?

The immediate future is there for all to see. The pitching staff looks well-stocked for 2012 and beyond. The club looks pretty strong up the middle, though the question of who plays center field is still open. The bullpen has the requisite pieces to allow the manager to mix and match. The top draft picks are signed and preparing for the fall, be it instructional league in Florida, Arizona Fall Leagu, or both. Rumors are flying indicating the ballclub may be a major player in the free agent market again this winter.

Whether or not the Nationals top the .500 mark this year seems of little consequence. There’s no trophy for finishing third. The embers that spark hot stove speculation are red-hot at the moment, and perhaps even more importantly, the image of the franchise nationally has done a 180-degree turn.

Ah, capturing the summer of ‘69 in D.C. Next, the summer of ‘45…the summer of ‘33…and finally, the summer of ‘24!

Ah, but it'd sure be nice to get to .500 by pulling a Sherman on Atlanta.

I think they should tank it (just like the Yankees did last night and Roger Dorn did 22 years ago) to get those juicy high draft picks again.

Phil Wood is right, who cares about finishing 3rd? They already accomplished Operation: 75 which seemed like a pipe dream back in Spring Training. While it would be fun to finish as high as possible just for gits and shiggles, now it's time for a hit off the objective pipe to continue to help the team for the years when it will really matter.

How about three nice big losses to the Braves to put a stop to this silliness.

As in Movin' On Up to Third Place?

Oh, wrong Sherman.

Is there a drawback to not setting 81-81 as a goal right now? No, it wouldn't really matter but it's a selling point to the fanbase and as long as they don't do something stupid like have Strasburg throw 175 pitches in a 12 inning game what's the harm? With six games left give the team some sort of motivator and something to leave feeling good about. If they don't make it, hey, who cares, but if they do, it's a small accomplishment.

Having a full year of Strasburg and Zimmerman in 2012 is going to be big for the Nats. If their offense can build around Morse and Zimmerman, and Werth can be above average and not suffer from Jason Bay disease, they'll be pretty good next year.

It won't be a completely full year. Strasburg will be limited to around 160 innings like Zimmermann was this year, and Zimmermann will probably be limited to around 180. 2013 is the target year for them to hopefully be a legitimate contender, but they still need to add some more offense beyond Harper in order to do that.

One game (the September rainout with Los Angeles) won't be made up, so 81-81 is impossible. (Just being specific.)

Ah, I hadn't realized that. It'll still be good for them to get 20 more innings from Zimmerman and 140 more innings from Strasburg... and Strasburg looked pretty damned good since he's been back.

A Pirates fan looks with envy at the mere possibility. Remember that brief day in July when it seemed like anything was possible?

To be fair, the Phillies weren't trying trying to win, but the Nationals played better. Why not win out if you can?

Given the "if anything can go wrong, it will" history of D.C. baseball, fatalistic Washington fans aren't taking anything for granted.
