Philadelphia Inquirer | Salisbury: Dear Mets, we miss you

September arrives this week and something feels different on the local baseball scene.

No New York Mets.

The Phillies entered the last two Septembers chasing their neighbors to the north, but this year the Mets are an afterthought in the National League East. The Phillies have a comfortable lead in the division, and barring what would be an embarrassing collapse, should win it for the third year in a row.

Have to be honest here: We miss the Mets.

Baseball came alive again in Philadelphia in 2007 and the Mets, who blew a late, seven-game lead, had a lot to do with it. The drama, excitement and entertainment value created by the Phillies’ late surge that season was heightened by the Mets’ misery. It’s always fun for a team when its fiercest rival becomes its foil, and that’s what happened for the Phillies the last two Septembers.

It's good so see the Phillies-Mets rivalry has finally taken root after 45 or so years...and '07 and '08 had a lot to do with it. Now Phils fans feel similar to how Bosox fans felt last year when their primary division rival wasn't the Yankees, but the Rays -- it just doesn't feel right.

Let's see. Somehow, the fact that it has spoiled the fun for Phillies' fans somehow hadn't made it onto the list of the reasons the Mets' debacle of a season has sucked rocks. Perhaps, somewhere deep down, I figured they'd find a way to get over the disappointment they are experiencing to find the Mets where they are. It'll be a struggle, I'm sure, but given time, Phillies' fans always persevere through hard times like this. I know I'm really thinking of what I can do to make them feel better as they muddle through.

You're welcome.

I don't miss the Mets one bit. I like my team to have a big lead. I bet there will still be nervousness before the end of the year, especially with Lidge's schizophrenia. Atlanta looks very close to being a scary team.

So Sam, don't waste any time thinking about making me feel better. :)

Besides, next year will be a completely different story.

I am really depressed about the Mets' prospects for next season. Even if they spend money and are luckier with health next season, they could still be behind two or three teams in the NL East next season. Philly's lineup doesn't quit and Atlanta's starting rotation looks like it'll be really, really strong.

I was killed all day yesterday for wearing my Met hat. By "Met" and Yankee fans. Its gonna be an uphill battle, good thing I have loads of experience with the Mets being a laughingstock. I feel bad for the youths who are new to this.
