Phillies blow lead in 10th, fall to Dodgers in 12th

Cliff Lee: 8 innings, 2 hits, 1 run

Phillies pitchers in the ninth inning, score 1-1, on the road:
Bastardo
Kendrick
Horst
Schwimer

Scoreless ninth inning.

Phillies score 2 in the top of the tenth. Ludicrous strategy pays off?

Jonathan Papelbon: 1 inning, 4 hits, 2 runs, BS (3)

At least he had the fortitude to finish the inning, in his third appearance in three days.

Conclusion: congratulations Jeremy Horst, I hereby promote you to Co-Closer.

Hey, this got buried by being posted several hours after some of the threads that are now listed as being more recent.

So, yeah. At least they didn't give up a walk-off wild pitch.

Hey, a blown Papelbon save, especially of the multi-run variety, is always worth celebrating.

Phillies won the previous two guys on one run scores against the Dodgers. They really shouldn't be complaining.

It is interesting to note that the Red Sox almost never used Papelbon for 3 straight games after his shoulder injury in 2006. He's been a fantastic closer, but the Red Sox managed that kind of performance from him largely by handling him with kid gloves in every way possible.

Of course that's just all the more reason that he isn't worth $12M+ per year.

Heh. That's the Papelbon I remember.

Papelbon in one of his tired stretches doesn't get a lot of swings and misses, and leaves himself susceptible to getting dinked and dunked by the BIP gods. Pitching a third straight day can also bring on that version.
