What a head scratching few innings that was tonight
All jokes aside, well played Philly!
Congrats to their fans.
yes - this CLEARLY proves that the DH suxxxxxxx
and the Ex-Stros ROOL.
AH LUUUUUUVVVVV Brad Lidge and Eric Bruntlett (who scored the winning run in 2 of 4 games)
That said, the Phillies dominated the series and didn't win because of one crazy decision.
Congrats.
there sure were a whole lot of bunts in this series
But Romero hit and then was trusted to work his way around the leadoff man getting on. Howell hit and then was pulled after one batter.
Probably the better team won...
Definitely the more deserving fanbase won.
Good to see...
107 days until pitchers and catchers.
No small consolation is seeing some of my favorite players (Utley, Hamels, Burrell, Moyer) win it all, and seeing a joyous Brad Lidge on the mound at the end, the Pujols homer forgotten.
Finally, for Joe Maddon, my rough paraphrase of Bill James: The platoon advantage is real and significant. Try to remember that next year.
The year ends in disappointment but what can you say? Being the second place team out of thirty is never something to be ashamed of even if it hadn't been such an amazing run to get there.
And really, the NL should get extra credit, since it has the Cubs.
So many players did something positive. Geoff Jenkins stunk it up this year, then got hurt and was the forgotten man, well, except for So Taguchi. But he said Charlie told him to look for something low and to take it easy and presto...
Burrell goes 0 for the series, up to his last AB and gets the game winning setup hit, if you will. I doubt he'll be back next year so it's a fine, fine farewell.
And the damn near perfect player, Chase Utley, makes that heads' up play to get Bartlett. In one of the post game interviews, Utley said he expected Bartlett to be going because he (Utley) would have been running in that situation.
It's a team that just grinded and grinded all year -- proof that hard work and persistence (and yeah, a bunch of talent) sometimes pays off.
Yup, that's some NL dominance right there.
Seriously, congrats to the Phillie fans here. You guys certainly deserve a title in town.
I have never seen someone fake a throw to one base in order to get someone to commit to another base before. THAT WAS ALMOST AS CLUTCH AS JETER'S ROUTINE BACKUP PLAY.
Even Geoff Jenkins contributed.
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR...what's the opposite of hatred?
I can tell you that two of the major streets by the University of PITTSBURGH campus were blocked by celebrators from about 10 to 11:30 PM. I like to think that I was with the mob, rather than being in the mob. Some quite cathartic chants.
The parade is <strike>Friday.</strike>HALLOWE'EN
I cannot ####### believe JP Howell hit in this game.
I cannot believe Howell AND JC Romero hit in this .389 of a game. With fully rested everyone.
A Philadelphia team will be masquerading as a World Champion. No, wait, IT'S FOR REAL!
I hope your ownership will do the right things to keep this team together. That is one hell of a team. There might be some rough patches next year but my goodness, Kazmir and Shields and Garza and that weak link, Sonnanstine :) with Price coming in. Upton, Longoria, Crawford, Navarro, some nice vets like Iwamura and Pena. A pretty good farm system. Lots to look forward to.
I wouldn't count on that so much, but they do have an excellent team full of outstanding players we most likely haven't heard the last of, with an excellent manager.
I am happy for Philadelphia and their fans. They've waited a long time for something good to come their way, and here it is.
Dang. Here comes winter...
I hope the cops and horses are out there. I really hope that nothing stupid happens.
Broad and Chestnut is going insane, and potentially getting very dangerous.
I estimate maybe 500 Pitt students who went insane for an hour. I heard one firework-like noise, and there were about 20 police cars around. No property damage.
Culminating with running into the library, cheering for about 2 minutes, and then running out.
This was at the university of PITTSBURGH.
EXCELSIOR
Very classy interview by Carlos Pena on Baseball Tonight just now.
But whatever. Congratulations to the Phillies and their fans. It's been a long time, and you deserved it.
Oh, and my wife thinks Cole Hamels is spongeworthy. He's got kindof a geeky voice though...I'm not sure if I ever heard him speak before tonight...
Oh, in Baltimore, which in theory at least is warmer than Philly, it's been here for a few days now.
Rays fans, don't despair. You're gonna have a lot of fun with your team.
Thus begins the worst part of the year. No baseball, cold weather (it was like 50 degrees out this morning!), and the sun going down early :(
Baltimore can't be more than about 75 miles to the south of Philly (it's quite a bit to the west), so I don't thing you get more than 1 or 2 degrees on average.
Big deal. There's 2 inches of snow on the ground in my part of Canada.
Did anyone else hear the interview with Jayson Werth, right after the end of the game on the live radio broadcast? He apparently lost his voice three days ago, my eyes watered as he gasped and grumbled Tom Waits-style.
well, ok, i'll enjoy this one and leave next year to next year.
And my sympathies to the Tampa fans. You had a hell of a season, and here's hoping next year's that little bit better.
Sounds familiar.
Congrats, Phillies.
I parked around City Hall thinking it would be wise to keep my car away from the stadium, only to exit the subway to a massive crowd right where the exit of the garage was, and figured it would be a good idea to take the train home. I wonder if their "park here for $5 by showing your ticket stub" will apply this morning...
I had tickets to Game 6, so thank you Phillies for winning this at home. You saved me a boatload of money, and I didn't even have to switch to Geico...
Congrats to the Rays and their fans for one hell of a season. If it wasn't the Phillies, I would have wanted to see you guys win it.
Oh, and what Crashburn Alley said...
Rollins makes a great play to turn two and beat the Nats, keep Lidge's perfect save streak alive, and clinch the division.
Cole Hamels.
Myers draws a 9 pitch walk against Sabathia, setting up...
Vic
Burrell's 3-run shot in Game 4 of the NLDS
Utley's 2-run game tying home rune against Lowe in Game 1 of the NLCS when it looked like he was going to pitch a shutout. Burrell again. Hamels again.
Cole Freakin Hamels.
Game 4, and Victorino again.
Matt. Stairs.
Hamels.
Hamels.
Jamie Moyer, diving, Ruiz.
Game 5, WS: Vic again! Rain. Jenkins (WTF?), Werth, Romero, Burrell, Feliz, Lidge.
I can't think of anyone on the 25 man roster who didn't contribute, save for So Taguchi. Just so happy that Jenkins got that hit - seems like a class guy whose best days are behind him, but deserved a World Series as much as anyone in the game.
Congrats to the Phils fans that have been posting since back in my lurking days like Crispix and Edmundo (and the rest, you know who you are). This is special.
I do truly love to see historically hard-luck franchises not named the Chicago Cubs make good, if for no other reason than it makes Cubs' fans even more suicidal!
Okay, okay, I am relatively happy that the Phillies won, regardless, but that their win also happens to be salt in the Cubs' wound makes me that much happier!
LONG LIVE THROWN BATTERIES! AT SANTA CLAUS, EVEN!
Actually that reminds me, you Philadelphians are actually, I think, reaping karma's reward for righteously booing that awful yokel woman from Alaska at the Flyers game! So extra congratulations to yous FROM RETARDO MUAH MUAH!! YER GREAT!
Seriously, congrats to all you Phils fans. And thanks to the Rays for making this a really fun year.
That Utley play was amazing. I told my dad (who is in town coincidentally) that he should be named MVP for that play alone. If Jeter makes that play, ESPN would have hijacked every satellite feed in the world, terrorist style, and put it on endless replay.
It's already supplanted Richie Ashburn's throw home to nab Cal Abrams on the last day of the 1950 regular season. And it's not every day you knock Ashburn out of the #1 spot in Philly.
The umpires? Not so much. I thought the umping in general sucked and the balls and strikes last night horrendous.
in the last 5 years, there have been a total of 22 WS games--the fewest in any 5-year stretch in MLB history
And over the past eight years, the National League has won four Series, the American League four. What was that again about innate AL superiority?
Everything was hard-fought for and well deserved. Good to see the World Champion back in the NL east.
Met fan Depletion.
Best Phillies team ever? The 1980 team had two inner-circle HOFers, but one might have to say that '08 was a deeper bunch.
My two impressions about yesterday's game:
1. That Baldelli home run was awesome. How the hell did he generate any power with his hands so close to his body? (True to form, Mr. Detail totally missed how great that swing was, instead choosing to babble about the wind. Jackass.)
2. Chase Utley is awesome. We should link to that article from a couple of month's ago that guy wrote that Utley doesn't play with enough passion. Another jackass.
Anyway, those 3 1/2 innings last night were great. Good pitching, good hitting, some great defense and some managerial decisions to argue about around the water cooler. People who didn't watch missed out. So #### them anyway.
A good team that has fought with dignity for the last few years.
It was awesome seeing Utley get his moment in the sun yesterday.
What a terrific play from a player underrated even on his own team..
Certainly the highlight of an otherwise humdrum World Series.
Dang.
Boswell once said there are only two seasons
Baseball season and the void.
I miss baseball already.
What will we do until spring?
Best Phillies team ever? The 1980 team had two inner-circle HOFers, but one might have to say that '08 was a deeper bunch.
The pitching's a lot stronger -- nobody on the '08 staff was as putrid as Randy Lerch. And I think Lidge was better than McGraw.
Another note: The Phils were the last of the original 16 MLB franchsies to win a World Series. After last night's second Series win, they're now tied with the Indians and Cubbies. Let's hope the Phils don't have to wait 60+ or 100+ years for their next one.
if Jeter makes that play, he flips it backhand to the catcher
I think everybody has done a pretty good job with descriptions so far...here's my 2 cents.
Ryan Howard looked like a 5 year old charging towards the mound after the final out. That's why you have to love baseball because it's still a kid's game, and that's what grown men revert to.
I thought the booing of Bud Selig as he was about to award the trophy was quite funny.
I thought the booing of the Rays when mentioned by Montgomery was a bit tasteless. I've got nothing against the Rays, and I think they were a worthy adversary. Had Longoria/Upton/Peña hit like they were supposed to this would have been a Rays championship. Those three guys are going to remember this as a wasted shot, and that's a shame, but I hope they get another one. Upton still looks rookie-esque as he bailed the Phils out when Crawford led off the 8th with a single, and he gave him no shot to steal 2nd, before GIDPing.
I thought Zelasko's questioning of Chollie about how his recently deceased mother would feel was out of line. The guy is celebrating a world series, let him enjoy the moment for at least a little while, hold off on emotional real tear jerker questions. It's baseball, not a soap opera. This question was later posed in the press-conference as well, where I thought it was slightly more appropriate.
In all honesty though, it's just a big relief to have finally won one. Losing after being up 3-1, leading what should have been a rain shortened game and then having it reset was quite nerve-racking....but it all worked out in the end.
Thanks 2008 Phillies.
YEah, that too. He's just a hell of a player is all.
I also loved Rocco's homer. If ever a guy deserved it, even in a loss. If he never plays another game he can always say he hit a world series HR. (Of course, I hope he has many more games in front of him). And it was an incredible swing.
Fair enough. There's a time and place for everything, and that just wasn't the right moment.
It really is striking. Even as invisible as Burrell was largely, he had three huge hits along the way. Howard struggled for the most part, but it's tough to remember that after he went all Ryan Howard in Games 3 and 4 of the Series. Myers scuffled a bit, but had the out-of-nowhere hitting performances. (Not to defend Myers ... God, my wife and I were having a blast watching all the postgame stuff last night, and then they finally interview Myers. He says something stupid, then another something stupid, at which point I decided to go finish up some work then head up to bed. Buzzkill.)
To take it a step further, given how narrowly they made the playoffs the last two years, you really have to talk up the contributions of Rich Dubee and Davey Lopes. And Lopes has been getting some love on the national broadcasts, given that he's a name, but Dubee, man, I think he's been absolutely key. That entire bullpen has produced at peak efficiency, Myers got straightened out, Blanton pitched well after a first few shaky starts, Madson became a terror down the stretch ... hell, getting Kendrick, a nondescript AA guy, to pitch fairly well for 30 starts was crucial in making the playoffs both years. On paper, getting Romero, Durbin, Lidge, Blanton, Eyre -- all these huge question mark guys -- and throwing them into that park should've been a nightmare. It worked out incredibly well, and I think a lot of that speaks to the pitching coach.
It's a Phillies thread, but I wanted to say that I thought that the Rays had a successful season when they broke .500. And I thought they had a very good season when they beat out the Yankees and Red Sox in the division. And they had an excellent season when they won a postseason series.
It's easy for me to tell other fans how they should feel about their team, but that fact that first place in the AL East went to the Rays, not the Orioles or the Blue Jays (in a non-Yankee or Sox year, of course) is noteworthy. No one will take that away from them.
And my boss just called and told me I got the transfer to a different group where I'll be able to do what I want to do rather than what I was doing for him. Not a bad day at all.
My wife and I are going to the parade -- looks like from the timing of things we'll be down somewhere near the ballpark. If you see a mostly grey haired and bearded 6' man with a 4'9" brunette, come up and say hi.
.. except for the Mariners fans who had him penciled into the rotation for 2011.
One mild drawback of the three-round postseason is that winning the pennant ain't quite what it used to be. I have a sense that before 1969, or even in the two-division no-interleague-play era, the league championship was really something to be proud of, and the World Series pretty much icing on that cake if you won it (unless maybe you kept losing it year after year, like the 40s-50s Dodgers). I still think of the 1983 Phillies, for instance, as the fondest memory of my whole life as a fan. It would be a shame if losing the Series was seen as a big defeat. The Rays should fly their pennant from the rafters and have a big day to celebrate it next spring, because they took it from a very tough defending champion.
Put her up on your shoulders or those of us watching at home won't be able to see her, not to mention her actually seeing the parade.
She'll just elbow her way to front. I taught her my only basketball skill. :) I have a tough time keeping up with her in crowds because she can dart through openings that my 200 and change body can't fit through.
her fist is so small that it's like being punched by a pin
She's at the perfect height to punch me... where it's most likely to hurt.
And goooo Nats! Gooo M's! Goooo living-vicariously-through-the-Rays!
The Phillies are deserving champions, horrible strike zone against the Rays notwithstanding.
Congrats and condolences to the Rays fans here. A wonderful season, and I'm sure you'll be back soon. Of course, that's what I thought about the Tigers after 06, and that looks a ways off. This Rays team is better, though.
My favorite baseball quote, which I think about each year on the day following the World Series. This is the first year in my lifetime the quote doesn't describe my emotions.
Good point. The '67 Red Sox are still beloved in New England even though they couldn't beat Gibson in Game 7 of the Series. Same with the 1950 Phillies in the Delaware Valley. The fact that the Giants didn't go on to win the 1951 World Series doesn't diminish the impact of Bobby Thomson's home run. Even the fictional baseball stories of the 1940s and 1950s (Damn Yankees, The Natural, the original Angels in the Outfield) all climaxed with trying to win the pennant, not the World Series.
Well, whatever it takes Dude. :) But to the point of a 3 round playoff, that was only a 2 rounder, although that was an awesome Braves team that team Steroid beat.
It's amazing how well Mitch Williams has been embraced. I think he himselph embraced his phailure, was a man about it and the phans phorgave (after a long while, mind you).
I was a lot more sympathetic to the team (the Browns?) that was 10-6 in the AFC and didn't make the playoffs even though some 8-8 team made the playoffs from the NFC. "NFC" and "AFC" are just random assortments of randomly allotted teams, each of which plays what, 25%? of its games against the other so-called division.
With last night's victory, Mitch's officially off the hook. If Bill Buckner can receive a lengthy standing O in Fenway after two subsequent Bosox world's championships, anybody can be forgiven.
Well, Ed Wade did have a pretty big role in building the Phillies' pen this year...
