Well Done Philly

What a head scratching few innings that was tonight

Well, I sure hope Mets players don't have guns in their apartments

Congrats phans.

Rollins predicted it...well 1 year late, but still...

All jokes aside, well played Philly!

Congrats to their fans.

NL ROOLZ!!!

yes - this CLEARLY proves that the DH suxxxxxxx

and the Ex-Stros ROOL.

AH LUUUUUUVVVVV Brad Lidge and Eric Bruntlett (who scored the winning run in 2 of 4 games)

I cannot ####### believe JP Howell hit in this game. With a righty coming up next and a fully rested bullpen.

That said, the Phillies dominated the series and didn't win because of one crazy decision.

Congrats.

so did romero
   8. base ball chick Posted: October 30, 2008 at 02:43 AM (#2999251)
rays made some bad fielding/baserunning eff-ups and maddon made some odd decisions. and navarro didn't throw anyone out.

there sure were a whole lot of bunts in this series
   9. Dave Spiwak Posted: October 30, 2008 at 02:48 AM (#2999252)
if any of the philles are reading this congradaulations you guys played well and are deserving champs!
   10. JJ1986 Posted: October 30, 2008 at 02:55 AM (#2999255)
so did romero

But Romero hit and then was trusted to work his way around the leadoff man getting on. Howell hit and then was pulled after one batter.
   11. Tuque Posted: October 30, 2008 at 02:58 AM (#2999256)
That was kind of anticlimactic, what with the rain delay and all...
   12. Surreality Posted: October 30, 2008 at 03:00 AM (#2999258)
Congrats Philly!
Probably the better team won...
Definitely the more deserving fanbase won.
Good to see...
   13. Lassus Posted: October 30, 2008 at 03:01 AM (#2999259)
At least an NL team won it, that's about the only positive personal spin I can put on it.

107 days until pitchers and catchers.
   14. sotapop Posted: October 30, 2008 at 03:05 AM (#2999260)
Tremendously bummed that I will be home on the couch tomorrow nite instead of in seat 2, row J, section 302 of the Trop. But a sincere congrats to the Phillies, the clearly better team, and their fans.
No small consolation is seeing some of my favorite players (Utley, Hamels, Burrell, Moyer) win it all, and seeing a joyous Brad Lidge on the mound at the end, the Pujols homer forgotten.
Finally, for Joe Maddon, my rough paraphrase of Bill James: The platoon advantage is real and significant. Try to remember that next year.
   15. Jim Wisinski Posted: October 30, 2008 at 03:17 AM (#2999265)
Congrats to the Phillies and to the portion of their fanbase that isn't made up of jerks and ########.

The year ends in disappointment but what can you say? Being the second place team out of thirty is never something to be ashamed of even if it hadn't been such an amazing run to get there.

And really, the NL should get extra credit, since it has the Cubs.
   22. The cushions are crowded for Edmundo Posted: October 30, 2008 at 03:52 AM (#2999277)
This has been so much fun. I wrote about this a few days ago about the ups and downs. For instance, for every Myers meltdown, there was a Myers resurgence. Adam Eaton was worse than last year's Adam Eaton, but Chad Durbin came out of nowhere. For all the second guessing of Charlie's moves, he knows his players and does his damnest to put them in positions to succeed.
So many players did something positive. Geoff Jenkins stunk it up this year, then got hurt and was the forgotten man, well, except for So Taguchi. But he said Charlie told him to look for something low and to take it easy and presto...
Burrell goes 0 for the series, up to his last AB and gets the game winning setup hit, if you will. I doubt he'll be back next year so it's a fine, fine farewell.
And the damn near perfect player, Chase Utley, makes that heads' up play to get Bartlett. In one of the post game interviews, Utley said he expected Bartlett to be going because he (Utley) would have been running in that situation.
It's a team that just grinded and grinded all year -- proof that hard work and persistence (and yeah, a bunch of talent) sometimes pays off.
   23. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: October 30, 2008 at 03:57 AM (#2999279)

Yup, that's some NL dominance right there.

Seriously, congrats to the Phillie fans here. You guys certainly deserve a title in town.

HUZZAH

I have never seen someone fake a throw to one base in order to get someone to commit to another base before. THAT WAS ALMOST AS CLUTCH AS JETER'S ROUTINE BACKUP PLAY.

Even Geoff Jenkins contributed.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR...what's the opposite of hatred?

I can tell you that two of the major streets by the University of PITTSBURGH campus were blocked by celebrators from about 10 to 11:30 PM. I like to think that I was with the mob, rather than being in the mob. Some quite cathartic chants.

The parade is <strike>Friday.</strike>HALLOWE'EN

I cannot ####### believe JP Howell hit in this game.

I cannot believe Howell AND JC Romero hit in this .389 of a game. With fully rested everyone.

But don't worry Rays fans, according to Karl Ravech "Francisco Perez is going to be a superstar."

A Philadelphia team will be masquerading as a World Champion. No, wait, IT'S FOR REAL!
   29. The cushions are crowded for Edmundo Posted: October 30, 2008 at 04:10 AM (#2999287)
And to the Rays fans...
I hope your ownership will do the right things to keep this team together. That is one hell of a team. There might be some rough patches next year but my goodness, Kazmir and Shields and Garza and that weak link, Sonnanstine :) with Price coming in. Upton, Longoria, Crawford, Navarro, some nice vets like Iwamura and Pena. A pretty good farm system. Lots to look forward to.
   30. Crispix Attacks Posted: October 30, 2008 at 04:11 AM (#2999289)
So I hear the Rays have some good players in the minors who could help them compete next year...Jeff niemann, Wade Davis, Reid Brignac...don't count them out, they've been building for 2009 and I think all the pieces are in place. Watch out Red Sox and Yankees!
   31. Answer Guy Posted: October 30, 2008 at 04:12 AM (#2999292)

But don't worry Rays fans, according to Karl Ravech "Francisco Perez is going to be a superstar."

I wouldn't count on that so much, but they do have an excellent team full of outstanding players we most likely haven't heard the last of, with an excellent manager.

I am happy for Philadelphia and their fans. They've waited a long time for something good to come their way, and here it is.
   32. AndrewJ Posted: October 30, 2008 at 04:16 AM (#2999294)
I just got back from Center City (I saw the game at a bar on 23rd and Walnut). Broad and Chestnut is going insane, and potentially getting very dangerous.

I hope the cops and horses are out there. I really hope that nothing stupid happens.
   35. Crispix Attacks Posted: October 30, 2008 at 04:19 AM (#2999297)
Surprisingly, there has never been a major league player named Francisco Perez. minors.sabrwebs.com lists 8 who played in the minors. (10? Why are there entries for 2 such people which don't include any information about them?)

Broad and Chestnut is going insane, and potentially getting very dangerous.

I estimate maybe 500 Pitt students who went insane for an hour. I heard one firework-like noise, and there were about 20 police cars around. No property damage.

Culminating with running into the library, cheering for about 2 minutes, and then running out.

This was at the university of PITTSBURGH.

EXCELSIOR

Very classy interview by Carlos Pena on Baseball Tonight just now.
   36. Booey Posted: October 30, 2008 at 04:21 AM (#2999298)
Kudos to the Phils, but I was actually hoping the Rays would take this game, and then the Phillies would close it out in six or seven. It's a bit of a letdown to see the season end on what was essentially a 3 1/2 inning game.

But whatever. Congratulations to the Phillies and their fans. It's been a long time, and you deserved it.

Oh, and my wife thinks Cole Hamels is spongeworthy. He's got kindof a geeky voice though...I'm not sure if I ever heard him speak before tonight...

Oh, in Baltimore, which in theory at least is warmer than Philly, it's been here for a few days now.
   38. Benji Posted: October 30, 2008 at 04:27 AM (#2999301)
This Met fan takes off his hat to the Phillies, and especially Charlie Manuel. The man's heart had to be heavy after losing his Mom, and I applaud his courage.

Rays fans, don't despair. You're gonna have a lot of fun with your team.
   39. mike f Posted: October 30, 2008 at 04:29 AM (#2999302)
Sotapop pretty much posted exactly what I would have, except I didn't win the ticket lottery for game 6. Anyways, congrats, Phans.

Thus begins the worst part of the year. No baseball, cold weather (it was like 50 degrees out this morning!), and the sun going down early :(
   40. The cushions are crowded for Edmundo Posted: October 30, 2008 at 04:32 AM (#2999306)

Baltimore can't be more than about 75 miles to the south of Philly (it's quite a bit to the west), so I don't thing you get more than 1 or 2 degrees on average.

Did anyone else hear the interview with Jayson Werth, right after the end of the game on the live radio broadcast? He apparently lost his voice three days ago, my eyes watered as he gasped and grumbled Tom Waits-style.
   44. Crispix Attacks Posted: October 30, 2008 at 04:42 AM (#2999312)
The Rays will need to replace Cliff Floyd next year...I suggest Pat Burrell.

As a Red Sox fan, I want to say THANK YOU PHILLY! I hate the Rays almost as much as I hate the Angels and Yankees. This comes in a close second to the D'Backs win over the Yanks. This was better in a way, because the Phils put the Rays in their place.

Sounds familiar.
   53. baudib Posted: October 30, 2008 at 09:04 AM (#2999381)
The play by Utley was insane. It tops Pete Rose grabbing the popup that came out of Boone's glove in the ninth for heads-up, clutch plays.

Congrats, Phillies.
   54. baudib Posted: October 30, 2008 at 09:06 AM (#2999382)
P.S. I think it will be a long time before any Mets or Phillies fans say good closers are overrated.
   55. Tschingsch Posted: October 30, 2008 at 10:00 AM (#2999392)
That was one hell of a 1st World Series game to go to... got to take a nice nap in the middle of the 6th and even got a bit of work and some laundry done.

I parked around City Hall thinking it would be wise to keep my car away from the stadium, only to exit the subway to a massive crowd right where the exit of the garage was, and figured it would be a good idea to take the train home. I wonder if their "park here for $5 by showing your ticket stub" will apply this morning...

I had tickets to Game 6, so thank you Phillies for winning this at home. You saved me a boatload of money, and I didn't even have to switch to Geico...

Congrats to the Rays and their fans for one hell of a season. If it wasn't the Phillies, I would have wanted to see you guys win it.

Oh, and what Crashburn Alley said...
   56. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 30, 2008 at 10:36 AM (#2999403)

Just to cap off the end of the year:

Rollins makes a great play to turn two and beat the Nats, keep Lidge's perfect save streak alive, and clinch the division.

Cole Hamels.

Myers draws a 9 pitch walk against Sabathia, setting up...

Vic

Burrell's 3-run shot in Game 4 of the NLDS

Utley's 2-run game tying home rune against Lowe in Game 1 of the NLCS when it looked like he was going to pitch a shutout. Burrell again. Hamels again.

Cole Freakin Hamels.

Game 4, and Victorino again.

Matt. Stairs.

Hamels.
Hamels.

Jamie Moyer, diving, Ruiz.

Game 5, WS: Vic again! Rain. Jenkins (WTF?), Werth, Romero, Burrell, Feliz, Lidge.

I can't think of anyone on the 25 man roster who didn't contribute, save for So Taguchi. Just so happy that Jenkins got that hit - seems like a class guy whose best days are behind him, but deserved a World Series as much as anyone in the game.

Congrats to the Phils fans that have been posting since back in my lurking days like Crispix and Edmundo (and the rest, you know who you are). This is special.
   58. RETARDO is "Captain Swing"! Posted: October 30, 2008 at 11:16 AM (#2999410)
Congrats to the Phillies and their phans!

I do truly love to see historically hard-luck franchises not named the Chicago Cubs make good, if for no other reason than it makes Cubs' fans even more suicidal!

Okay, okay, I am relatively happy that the Phillies won, regardless, but that their win also happens to be salt in the Cubs' wound makes me that much happier!

LONG LIVE THROWN BATTERIES! AT SANTA CLAUS, EVEN!

Actually that reminds me, you Philadelphians are actually, I think, reaping karma's reward for righteously booing that awful yokel woman from Alaska at the Flyers game! So extra congratulations to yous FROM RETARDO MUAH MUAH!! YER GREAT!

Nice to see it end on a very sharp <s>strikeout</s> Strike Two,

Seriously, congrats to all you Phils fans. And thanks to the Rays for making this a really fun year.

That Utley play was amazing. I told my dad (who is in town coincidentally) that he should be named MVP for that play alone. If Jeter makes that play, ESPN would have hijacked every satellite feed in the world, terrorist style, and put it on endless replay.
   60. AndrewJ Posted: October 30, 2008 at 11:50 AM (#2999417)
The play by Utley was insane. It tops Pete Rose grabbing the popup that came out of Boone's glove in the ninth for heads-up, clutch plays.

It's already supplanted Richie Ashburn's throw home to nab Cal Abrams on the last day of the 1950 regular season. And it's not every day you knock Ashburn out of the #1 spot in Philly.

   63. AndrewJ Posted: October 30, 2008 at 12:21 PM (#2999429)
The last four Series champions -- White Sox, Cardinals, Red Sox and Phillies -- are four of the 16 original (from 1901) major league franchises. Not a wild-card winner in the bunch, either.

And over the past eight years, the National League has won four Series, the American League four. What was that again about innate AL superiority?

Very sharp victory by Philadelphia. And thanks to the groovy scheme of starting it in the 6th inning, I got to stay awake till the finish :)

Best Phillies team ever? The 1980 team had two inner-circle HOFers, but one might have to say that '08 was a deeper bunch.
   67. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: October 30, 2008 at 01:01 PM (#2999444)
Congrats to the Phillies.

My two impressions about yesterday's game:

1. That Baldelli home run was awesome. How the hell did he generate any power with his hands so close to his body? (True to form, Mr. Detail totally missed how great that swing was, instead choosing to babble about the wind. Jackass.)

2. Chase Utley is awesome. We should link to that article from a couple of month's ago that guy wrote that Utley doesn't play with enough passion. Another jackass.

Anyway, those 3 1/2 innings last night were great. Good pitching, good hitting, some great defense and some managerial decisions to argue about around the water cooler. People who didn't watch missed out. So #### them anyway.

Congrats to the Phils and their cranks.
A good team that has fought with dignity for the last few years.

It was awesome seeing Utley get his moment in the sun yesterday.
What a terrific play from a player underrated even on his own team..
Certainly the highlight of an otherwise humdrum World Series.

I just clicked over to BBRef and in the Phillies franchise encyclopedia there's a "WS" next to 2008. It's official now. It actually happened.

Best Phillies team ever? The 1980 team had two inner-circle HOFers, but one might have to say that '08 was a deeper bunch.

The pitching's a lot stronger -- nobody on the '08 staff was as putrid as Randy Lerch. And I think Lidge was better than McGraw.

Another note: The Phils were the last of the original 16 MLB franchsies to win a World Series. After last night's second Series win, they're now tied with the Indians and Cubbies. Let's hope the Phils don't have to wait 60+ or 100+ years for their next one.

Thanks Wally. I'm catching up a little late. I let the wife have the PC while "we" were watching the game, the post-game celebration/press conferences...
I think everybody has done a pretty good job with descriptions so far...here's my 2 cents.

Ryan Howard looked like a 5 year old charging towards the mound after the final out. That's why you have to love baseball because it's still a kid's game, and that's what grown men revert to.

I thought the booing of Bud Selig as he was about to award the trophy was quite funny.

I thought the booing of the Rays when mentioned by Montgomery was a bit tasteless. I've got nothing against the Rays, and I think they were a worthy adversary. Had Longoria/Upton/Peña hit like they were supposed to this would have been a Rays championship. Those three guys are going to remember this as a wasted shot, and that's a shame, but I hope they get another one. Upton still looks rookie-esque as he bailed the Phils out when Crawford led off the 8th with a single, and he gave him no shot to steal 2nd, before GIDPing.

I thought Zelasko's questioning of Chollie about how his recently deceased mother would feel was out of line. The guy is celebrating a world series, let him enjoy the moment for at least a little while, hold off on emotional real tear jerker questions. It's baseball, not a soap opera. This question was later posed in the press-conference as well, where I thought it was slightly more appropriate.

In all honesty though, it's just a big relief to have finally won one. Losing after being up 3-1, leading what should have been a rain shortened game and then having it reset was quite nerve-racking....but it all worked out in the end.

Thanks 2008 Phillies.

Post #58 is gold. Congrats, exuberant Phillies fans! And the measured ones, too. 8-)

What about the Utley double play when he tagged the runner, spun around and then threw to 1st? That was just as good IMO.

YEah, that too. He's just a hell of a player is all.

I also loved Rocco's homer. If ever a guy deserved it, even in a loss. If he never plays another game he can always say he hit a world series HR. (Of course, I hope he has many more games in front of him). And it was an incredible swing.

Fair enough. There's a time and place for everything, and that just wasn't the right moment.

I can't think of anyone on the 25 man roster who didn't contribute, save for So Taguchi.

It really is striking. Even as invisible as Burrell was largely, he had three huge hits along the way. Howard struggled for the most part, but it's tough to remember that after he went all Ryan Howard in Games 3 and 4 of the Series. Myers scuffled a bit, but had the out-of-nowhere hitting performances. (Not to defend Myers ... God, my wife and I were having a blast watching all the postgame stuff last night, and then they finally interview Myers. He says something stupid, then another something stupid, at which point I decided to go finish up some work then head up to bed. Buzzkill.)

To take it a step further, given how narrowly they made the playoffs the last two years, you really have to talk up the contributions of Rich Dubee and Davey Lopes. And Lopes has been getting some love on the national broadcasts, given that he's a name, but Dubee, man, I think he's been absolutely key. That entire bullpen has produced at peak efficiency, Myers got straightened out, Blanton pitched well after a first few shaky starts, Madson became a terror down the stretch ... hell, getting Kendrick, a nondescript AA guy, to pitch fairly well for 30 starts was crucial in making the playoffs both years. On paper, getting Romero, Durbin, Lidge, Blanton, Eyre -- all these huge question mark guys -- and throwing them into that park should've been a nightmare. It worked out incredibly well, and I think a lot of that speaks to the pitching coach.

The year ends in disappointment but what can you say? Being the second place team out of thirty is never something to be ashamed of even if it hadn't been such an amazing run to get there.

It's a Phillies thread, but I wanted to say that I thought that the Rays had a successful season when they broke .500. And I thought they had a very good season when they beat out the Yankees and Red Sox in the division. And they had an excellent season when they won a postseason series.

It's easy for me to tell other fans how they should feel about their team, but that fact that first place in the AL East went to the Rays, not the Orioles or the Blue Jays (in a non-Yankee or Sox year, of course) is noteworthy. No one will take that away from them.

Thanks to everybody for the kind words. I'll remember to be gracious even if/when the Mets win. :)

And my boss just called and told me I got the transfer to a different group where I'll be able to do what I want to do rather than what I was doing for him. Not a bad day at all.

My wife and I are going to the parade -- looks like from the timing of things we'll be down somewhere near the ballpark. If you see a mostly grey haired and bearded 6' man with a 4'9" brunette, come up and say hi.

Rollins makes a great play to turn two and beat the Nats, keep Lidge's perfect save streak alive, and clinch the division.
Thus allowing the Nats to draft Stephen Strasburg next June (assuming Bowden and those ownership clowns actually shell out the money to sign him). Everyone's a winner!

The feeling I had the day after the Yankees won in 1996 is one that I'll never forget in my lifetime. Enjoy it, Phillies fans. And document it too - it seems like you'll never forget details (like what kind of sofa you had then and such), but if you have a camcorder or digital camera, just squeeze off a few shots of everyday life. You'll thank me later.

Being the second place team out of thirty

One mild drawback of the three-round postseason is that winning the pennant ain't quite what it used to be. I have a sense that before 1969, or even in the two-division no-interleague-play era, the league championship was really something to be proud of, and the World Series pretty much icing on that cake if you won it (unless maybe you kept losing it year after year, like the 40s-50s Dodgers). I still think of the 1983 Phillies, for instance, as the fondest memory of my whole life as a fan. It would be a shame if losing the Series was seen as a big defeat. The Rays should fly their pennant from the rafters and have a big day to celebrate it next spring, because they took it from a very tough defending champion.

Put her up on your shoulders or those of us watching at home won't be able to see her, not to mention her actually seeing the parade.

She'll just elbow her way to front. I taught her my only basketball skill. :) I have a tough time keeping up with her in crowds because she can dart through openings that my 200 and change body can't fit through.

her fist is so small that it's like being punched by a pin
She's at the perfect height to punch me... where it's most likely to hurt.

Although I've been pulling for the Rays since March of this year, I have to say that it doesn't bother me very much to see them lose to a team like Philly, which (Brett Myers excepted) has a gaggle of players I respect and wish nothing but the best upon: Utley, Rollins, Howard, Hamels, Lidge, and especially Jamie Moyer. Congrats to the Phillies and to their long-suffering fans, who now have a World Series that they can proudly claim was won against the best team in the American League.

And goooo Nats! Gooo M's! Goooo living-vicariously-through-the-Rays!

Regarding Baldelli's homerun, there is a non-zero chance that that will be his last major league at-bat. Concerning the path his career has taken it's a pretty good way to go out. The only thing better would have been if the Rays had won. It's a shame really because then we would have had the makings of a classic series. As it is it was as good as a five game series can be.

The Phillies are deserving champions, horrible strike zone against the Rays notwithstanding.

Congrats and condolences to the Rays fans here. A wonderful season, and I'm sure you'll be back soon. Of course, that's what I thought about the Tigers after 06, and that looks a ways off. This Rays team is better, though.

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." Bart Giamatti.

My favorite baseball quote, which I think about each year on the day following the World Series. This is the first year in my lifetime the quote doesn't describe my emotions.

Good point. The '67 Red Sox are still beloved in New England even though they couldn't beat Gibson in Game 7 of the Series. Same with the 1950 Phillies in the Delaware Valley. The fact that the Giants didn't go on to win the 1951 World Series doesn't diminish the impact of Bobby Thomson's home run. Even the fictional baseball stories of the 1940s and 1950s (Damn Yankees, The Natural, the original Angels in the Outfield) all climaxed with trying to win the pennant, not the World Series.

Well, whatever it takes Dude. :) But to the point of a 3 round playoff, that was only a 2 rounder, although that was an awesome Braves team that team Steroid beat.

It's amazing how well Mitch Williams has been embraced. I think he himselph embraced his phailure, was a man about it and the phans phorgave (after a long while, mind you).

The NL and AL pennants still hold a lot of mystique, more so than their equivalent levels of accomplishment in other sports. I was a whole lot more gratified and satisfied when the Phillies won the National League title than when the Sixers won the Eastern Conference and the Eagles won the NFC in the last decade. With those other two sports, losing in the last round of the playoffs was no better or worse than losing in the second round. But in baseball the pennant means something. Although interleague play reduces the significance, the NL is still a group of teams that play each other throughout the season and don't really compete against the AL. Unlike the NFC.

I was a lot more sympathetic to the team (the Browns?) that was 10-6 in the AFC and didn't make the playoffs even though some 8-8 team made the playoffs from the NFC. "NFC" and "AFC" are just random assortments of randomly allotted teams, each of which plays what, 25%? of its games against the other so-called division.

With last night's victory, Mitch's officially off the hook. If Bill Buckner can receive a lengthy standing O in Fenway after two subsequent Bosox world's championships, anybody can be forgiven.

Well, Ed Wade did have a pretty big role in building the Phillies' pen this year...
