PhillyBurbs.com: Phils sign reliever Seanez

EVERYBODY PANIC!

The righty appeared in just four Grapefruit League games this spring due to a strained groin. When on the mound, he struggled, posting a 7.71 ERA over 4 2/3 innings.

The Phils began the season on Monday with an 11-man pitching staff, but planned to add an arm Saturday with closer Brad Lidge expected to come off the disabled list.

To activate Seanez, the Phils probably will release expendable infielder Wes Helms or waiver rookie reliever Tim Lahey, a Rule 5 Draft pick who was acquired last weekend after the right-hander didn’t make the Chicago Cubs’ season-opening roster.

I was wondering how long the Phillies would have 11 pitchers and 3 third basemen on the roster.

I thought Seanez would start looking good to Gillick.

Co Bao: Why did they pick you? Because you like to fight?
Rambo: I'm expendable.
Co Bao: What mean expendable?
Rambo: It's like someone invites you to a party and you don't show up. It doesn't really matter.

Huh. I actually like that little dialogue exchange. Rambo II?

All I can remember from seeing that movie as a kid is that it sucked.

Or is that from the new one?

Seanez was pitching for the Braves in one of the first games I watched on TV. I'd been following the Phillies box scores for a while, and then noticed that the games were actually shown on the cable sports channel I never paid attention to.

So during maybe the first or second game I watched, Seanez was brought in, and I noticed that his name was pronounced in an unexpected Americanized way, so I thought "Ah, you get real information from watching these games."

Hearing his name I still associate him with the great Braves bullpen of Rocker and Ligtenberg and Remlinger and McGlinchy. And, um, Odalis Perez, or possibly Octavio Dotel.

Good times.

I always liked Rudy. Something to be said for a guy who keeps tearing ligaments, keeps coming back and keeps throwing gas.

And who's got a black belt and wanted to go into UFC after baseball until his family dissuaded him.

Rambo II?

Yep. Everytime I see the word "expendable" I think of it.

While that preseason E.R.A. looks pretty darn scary, this looks like a decent fill until Lidge returns. As long as Philadelphia puts up big runs, a weakened bullpen will not hurt too much.

I'm no Wes Helms apologist, but isn't he the best third baseman on the team? (Last year notwithstanding, of course.)

I'm finding it hard to believe Pedro Feliz's glove can possibly make up for a career .288 OBP.

If Rudy Seanez is the answer, it's a damn strange question.

Who has had 2 tours of duty with the Dodgers, 2 tours of duty with the Red Sox, 2 tours of duty with the Braves, and 4 tours of duty with the Braves
