Phils ask for Oliver Perez to remove ‘distracting’ undershirt

Oliver’s armpit ain’t here to stay.

Left-hander Oliver Perez was brought in to open the eighth inning and face lefty hitters Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. After Utley flied out, Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg came out of the dugout to complain to plate umpire Mark Wegner about a problem with the sleeves of the pitcher’s red, long-sleeved undershirt.

“Noticed it from the dugout. It was just flopping,” Sandberg said afterward. “There was a lot of movement there with the delivery. It was fairly obvious with that much movement on it that it would be distracting.”

The four umpires met and Wegner told Perez to remove the shirt, which had slits in each sleeve. On the way to the dugout, he dropped the ball, flipped his glove to the ground and began disrobing, returning to pitch without a shirt beneath his white D-backs jersey.

Howard singled and Perez was removed from the game for right-hander Brad Zeigler.

“[The umpire] said that one sleeve was longer than the other and he had a little tear in it,” D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. “There was nothing we could do about it. The rule says it’s supposed to be the same length, the same color. And it can’t be flapping. I have a pretty good idea whose call that was in the other dugout and it wasn’t Sandberg.”

When asked if he was talking about Phillies bench coach Larry Bowa, Gibson respnded: “You figure it out!”

Didn't Perez get in some hot water over the excessive amount of chains he wore on the mound back in his Pittsburgh days?

I wish the Snorg tee girls would remove their distracting tee-shirts

I would totally buy them if they would. The shirts, I mean.

Also, the girls.

Since this is a Phillies thread, I'd like to note this comment from a now-closed thread:

If Marlon Byrd is still an everyday player by August, I will eat my shoe.

Looks like Byrd has played every game so far. I'm rooting for him!

I remember I watched the Mets first televised spring training game that year with a Mets fan. We spent the whole game making fun of Marlon Byrd and how silly it was to give him a roster spot, which became a running joke with us. Somewhere around May me re-evaluated.

If you switch on television it's just ridiculous and its destructive. It kills us. And talk shows will kill us. They kill our language. So we have to declare holy war against what we see every single day on television. Commercials and — I think there should be real war against commercials, real war against talk shows, real war against ESPN and Intentional Talk, or all these things.

The scary, but not all that unsurprising, thing is that Byrd's 96 OPS+ leads all Philly OFs.

But the Ruiz contract looks great so far.
