Phils give Odalis Perez a look, but interest only ‘lukewarm’

Don’t go shopping for that Odalis Perez jersey in Phillies pinstripes just yet.

Special assistant Charley Kerfeld worked out the 30-year-old lefthander Saturday in Perez’ native Dominican Republic. Afterward, the onetime star told MLB.com that “it went good” and indicated he expected to hear back from the Phils shortly.

However, assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said yesterday that the team’s interest is just “lukewarm” and that there is no timetable for making a decision.

Hmm…I wonder if this Charlie Kerfeld “workout” included a few tortuous sessions of the HB Strut?

Any harm in stashing him at AAA and hope to catch lightning in a bottle? Or has that bottle been broken?

A Charlie Kerfeld sighting?

Both the Phillies and the Braves could use Kyle Lohse. I'm not sure how much either team has to spend though. I don't think the Braves have the money.

What do you think of the Mets signing Lohse as insurance for Pedro / Duque? Assuming that Carlos Silva money is not required, assuming say, $25-$30M, would you do it?

Ugh, what's with all the retreads? Is our farm system that bad? Answer: yes. Is our farm system bad enough that we couldn't trade a lower-level prospect for the young equivalent of Odalis Perez (Kyle Davies or someone)? No, it's not that bad.

What I find odd is the complete lack of mentions of Scott Mathieson. Isn't he ready to come back from TJS yet?

What do I think of Mets fans hijacking Phillies threads to gloat? I don't think very highly of it.

Sorry. Also I don't think that the Mets are huge favourites over the Braves or Phillies or anything like that, so I'm not gloating.

Sorry, any mention of the Mets rotation as if it somehow still needs improvement looks like a form of gloating to me. Maybe the mood will pass in a few months.

Crisp, are you getting the 1994 feeling all over again? While '93 was flukier than '07, once the Mets signed Santana I got that sinking sensation. I hope it's not 14 more years before the Phils see the playoffs.
And Mathieson wasn't the greatest prospect anyway before TJ. Anything from him will be a bonus. Or maybe it's my PSD (post-Santana Depression)

I like Mathieson as a reliever. He really seemed on the verge of a breakout before the surgery.

The real unsung guy in the Phils' system is Fabio Castro. He misses prospect lists because he spent a year as a Rule V guy, but a 22 year old lefty with that K rate has something going for him.

I love Charley Kerfeld (post playing career).
