Cole Gillespie and his lone HR are not amused.
Many big-league hitters consider Chase Field among their favorite places to ply their craft. The Diamondbacks would like to do something about that.
Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall said the club is “looking at everything” in hopes of creating a neutral playing environment - or at least one that doesn’t skew so heavily toward hitters.
Among the ideas: Changing the dimensions, raising fences and even borrowing a page from Colorado’s Coors Field by storing baseballs in a climate-controlled humidor.
“We do know that it’s an issue,” Hall said. “The offense is unreal at Chase Field. We have a launching pad now. We have a team that’s hopefully going to be built around young pitching. We should look at ways to reduce offense, especially from an opponents’ standpoint.”
Chase Field’s offensive tendencies are nothing new. Going by ESPN.com’s Park Factor statistics for runs scored - generated by comparing run-scoring rates in home games to road games - Chase has ranked among the top six highest-scoring ballparks in the majors for the past five seasons.

1. Best Regards, Larry M. Posted: August 27, 2010 at 12:16 PM (#3627120)I really dislike this kind of logic. The stadium didn't bother Johnson and Schilling and Haren and Webb. And how are you going to tinker with the stadium so opponents' offense goes down more than your own?
The Yankees had that movable batter's eye for a while back in the fifties and sixties. Probably couldn't get away with that nowadays. Probably couldn't get a few thousand people to wear white shirts and sit in the CF bleachers either.
Don't know offhand about the other 3 guys, but it sure did affect Schilling.
1999, with Philadelphia: 25 HR allowed, 14 at home
2001, with Arizona: 37 HR allowed, 24 at home
2004, with Boston: 23 HR allowed, 15 at home
As for the "young pitching" that Hall's talking about--Barry Enright is fly-prone, and since his 2010 BABIP is definitely unsustainable the team is probably fearing 2011.
Do what the '91 twins did. Blow the HVAC in from the OF when the opponents are up, blow it out over the OF when you are up.
