Piecoro: Arizona Diamondbacks’ Mark Trumbo eager to prove doubters wrong

Or as Mitch Williams squirmed out last night: “Trumbo is a better all-around hitter than Goldschmidt.”

“With him and Goldy, you’ve got two of the more prolific right-handed hitters in the game right now,” Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers said. “In this ballpark, they’ll hit balls out of the ballpark even when they miss. Both are the type of right-handed bats that in the bigger ballparks like Petco, LA and San Francisco, those parks will be hard to hold them.”

Trumbo, who has bounced among first, third and the outfield in his career, does not arrive with a good defensive reputation, but he said he’s looking forward to the opportunity to focus on one position, left field.

Towers said the club is confident he won’t be a liability.

“I believe this guy is going to turn himself into a solid-average defender out there,” he said. “Only time will tell, but I wouldn’t bet against him. If we had that huge of concerns, it probably would have been difficult for us to make the deal. But there was a comfort level from our group, as evaluators, that he’d be able to handle it, and we felt the offense that he brought was a real plus.”

Trumbo says he “absolutely enjoys it” when others doubt his ability.

“I think you’ve got to have something that motivates you,” he said. “There’s no shortage of things that people seem to pick out that I do or don’t do. I think it’s good to play with a chip on your shoulder. To the guys out there that have those things to say, you can keep it up and we’ll turn it into something positive.”

i like trumbo. then again i'm prone to having a primordial/visceral urge to get my home runs and RBIs in bunches, as IIRC trumbo's MO the last couple'a years has been roughly 1/2 season of worldbeating followed by 1/2 season of hitting under .200 with all of the trimmings.

i kind of wanted the white sox to end up with him, seeing as he's the type of player who you need at a ballpark like theirs. though i get what they're doing with adam eaton, and i have it from good authority (wayne randazzo, voice of YOUR kane county cougars) that he's a "bum." i can't imagine advanced stats doing the guy any favors either. he's cut from that rob deer / adam dunn cloth.... but when you figure that the emergence of kole calhoun has made you expendable, well then c'est la vie.

He is terribly streaky. It's painful to watch. Trumbo looked unstoppable during the first half of 2012. Since then, not so much.

Homeruns off of strikeouts is the new market inefficiency.

Trumbo should challenge for 200 HR's if strikeouts count too.

Isn't Arizona a homer-friendly park? Trumbo should do well there. Might even get his OBP over .300.

I almost buy this argument! Any data on average home run distances for Trumbo that might make this a valid point?

There's this. Trumbo's career OBP .299, league average OBP for the same period .313.

Trumbo's OBP for the last three years is .300. During that time, only 19 players have made as many outs playing at either 1B or left field, and their average OBP is .347. The guy can only play those two positions, and he's a pretty terrible outfielder. He'll get a bunch of homers in Arizona, but that guy makes a LOT of outs in the process.

Well.... yes. I mean we know this about Trumbo already. But perhaps Towers was trying to exploit a little data he had that said Trumbo might be a little more useful to Arizona than to an average team.

Dunn is nothing like trumbo. Although for 2014 I would probably take trumbo, Dunn's best years blow trumbos (so far) out of the water.

ESPN's hit tracker has some data on distance. I don't know how to compare or use that data to project how he'd do in a different park, but he tied Chris Davis for the lead in "no doubt" home runs last year, and only had two "lucky" home runs. He was also 4th in MLB for average HR distance ("golden sledgehammer" award).

I don't understand what the D'backs are doing.

Just a little snark, Mr. thetailor. No hard feelings I hope.
