That was my response. Trading Overbay for a catcher coming off back surgery just seems like a terrible idea.
Edit: It was suggested in the Lounge that the Jays might see this as the starting point in a series of moves: trade Overbay for Snyder, move Lind to 1B, sign/trade for replacement outfielder. I don't like that plan much, either, but that might be the plan.

Nope. The buyout is extra.
Most people are fine with him. He's a perfectly capable 1B who got signed to a slightly over-market contract.
And I'd much rather have him than a just-as-expensive catcher coming off a back injury.
But if Snyder is healthy, this is 1 year of a moderately paid average 1B for 2 years of a moderately paid average C. The Jays get a smidgen of payroll relief in 2010, the D-Backs get a smidgen in 2011. Pretty meh on its face.
Does this mean Conor Jackson is toast? I missed that news somehow.
Snyder's a little weird. He had a nice average-ish K-rate at 25-26 (not quite 1 per 5 AB) but it's been pretty bad (nearly 1 per 3.5 AB) at 27-28. Nice walk rate though.
I didn't realize Snyder is already 28...I think I'd much rather hang on to Overbay and figure something else out at catcher. I wish Arencibia had really tore it up in 2009, then I would feel good about bringing some crappy veteran in to team up with him.

They're in order of a tweaked Marcel-type projected OPS+, and they range from 86 to 81, so they're all about the same. It's a regular Crappy Veteran Catchers ? Us. The MLE for Valentin's month in Buffalo was in line with the rest of his career, I have no idea why the Mets released him (He mouthed off to Bernazard?) or if he has any plans to play again.
Not sure if this trade would even take place, but swapping a 32 year old, very averagish 1bman who can't hit lefties and has just average power vs. righties and who'll make $7m next year, for a 28 year old catcher who had solid years with the bat in both 07 and 08, has been very good defensively, seems to be recovering well from his surgery, and will make about $5.5m/year for the next 2 years, is more than a fair trade for both parties involved - considering their respective needs at 1b and C next year. I think Walt's analysis is spot on - this is a very "meh" trade that addresses areas of weakness for both teams but doesn't do anything really sexy for the Blue Jays or Dbacks.
Conor is showing well in the Carribean, looks to be over desert fever. But he's also an outfielder. He's a plus defensively in left field, and a minus defensively at first. He'll make a nice platoon at first against lefties, but that's it.
same as the Hardy trade. Yea Gomez sucks but Hardy actually was the worst ss in the league last year.
Means he can do that for YOUR team..

I hope you mean the NL, because there's a guy who split time between Seattle and KC that would vehemently dispute that claim.
Fangraphs actually has Hardy being better in 2009 than Orlando Cabrera, Izturis, Guzman, Everett, Alex Gonzalez and Renteria too. He had a bad year, but that might be over-stating it.

And not to worry, if there's one thing the Jays have an abundance of, it's prospects ready to step in in the OF.

Even having a dreadful year at the plate Hardy's defense makes him still average. I have written harsh words on how Hardy failed to cope with Alcides presence but vehemently disagree with the above assessment. That is flat out incorrect.
Agree 100%. Hardy is nowhere close to the worst SS in either league.
