It has been a little more than a year since Paul Goldschmidt made his major-league debut, and in that time he has gone from a player who was viewed skeptically by the industry to someone whom the Diamondbacks view as a cornerstone of their future.
“I’m hoping,” General Manager Kevin Towers said, “this is a guy who stays a Diamondback for a long, long time.”
It has been an impressive 12 months for Goldschmidt. In 146 career games entering Thursday, he had a .290 average, .358 on-base and .526 slugging, and his .884 OPS ranks fifth among major-league first baseman in that span. He has 42 doubles, two triples and 24 home runs.
