Pirates activate Andrew McCutchen from the disabled list

Huh, I thought the prognosis was a lot worse. Pirates seem to need him in the lineup a tiny little bit.

Andrew McCutchen is off the disabled list and back in the Pirates’ lineup after missing the minimum 15 days with a fractured rib…

McCutchen was having another MVP-caliber season at the time of the injury, ranking among the NL’s top five in batting average (.311), on-base percentage (.411), slugging percentage (.536), and OPS (.947). Even after missing two weeks he still ranks second to only Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton in Wins Above Replacement among position players.

ESPN has Heyward at 5.7 WAR and McCutchen at 5.0 (as in it's not even close).

Must be going by fangraphs WAR

Stanton 5.2
McCutchen 4.8
Heyward, Lucroy and Gomez at 4.6

EDIT: It is awfully cumbersome, but media outlets should either make it clear whose WAR they're using in articles or pick one to use across their organization.

Or better yet, fangraphs and baseball-reference call them different things.

With WAR, you are apparently entitled to you own facts, too.

I think that especially after tonight's beatdown, the Pirates are realistically out of the running and ought to return McCutchen to the DL until his injury is fully healed (which at present it almost certainly is not, given the nature of the injury.)

I remain optimistic about the 2015 Pirates IF ownership is willing to spend some money to improve the rotation, as they should have done last winter. I'm nervous about running a still-hurt McCutchen out there to chase an increasingly unlikely 2014 dream.
