Pirates ink Chacon

I haven’t read the article, but If this turns out to be Elio Chacon…then I really should have heeded Hog Farmer Hugh Romney’s warnings!

Right-hander Shawn Chacon, the leading contender for the final spot in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ rotation, bypassed salary arbitration Friday by agreeing to a one-year contract worth $3,825,000.

Chacon, who split last season between the Yankees and Pirates, filed for $4.25 million in arbitration and the Pirates offered $3.7 million.

Chacon can make up to $225,000 in performance bonuses: $50,000 each for 160 and 180 innings and $125,000 for 200 innings.

$3.8M is a ridiculous amount for a guy whose weighted mean PECOTA VORP is 3.2.

I thought "Hey, that's a little over a million per win. That's a pretty sweet deal"

Then I remembered that VORP is expressed in runs. Eeeeeewwwww

What the hell? Chacon is a guy you non-tender and try to bring back for $1 million or less, not offer a contract and decide you'll pay at least $3.7 million. Sure, if that's the situation he'd probably be able to get the same offer from a contender and choose to go there instead but it's not like you're missing out on much if Shawn Chacon turns down your offer.

Pirates ink Chacon

is a better use of him than

Pirates pitch Chacon

He could be a giant stamp or something.

That's alot of money to bet on Chacon being the pitching version of Reggie Sanders.

I think Chacon will live pretty well off of 2003 and 2005.

God damn it to hell.

"That's alot of money to bet on Chacon being the pitching version of Reggie Sanders."

Chacon wishes he could pitch as well as Sanders.

That's only $2.2M less than what they saved by dumping Aramis Ramirez.

And less than $1M below what they spent on all their draft bonuses last year.

And 54.3 times the largest bonus they're willing to pay to any Latin American prospect.

Have I cheered you up yet?

2007 is a good year to sign him--he is the (very) poor man's Brett Saberhagen. Instead of being a cy young every other year, his ERA+ breaks 100.
